<swedneck>
it neither supports symlinks in ipfs content, nor can it read symlinks on the filesystem
<swedneck>
oh nvm it can read symlinks, no clue how well it actually handles them though

What you're doing won't work, you will need manually edit the UnixFS Dag and link to the other UnixFS Dag you want to symlink too
<reasv>
What I really want to do is add a folder which is not in my home folder to IPFS without copying it
rendar has quit []
<reasv>
is that impossible? I thought you could do it with the filestore

<hamnox[m]>
Symlinks are like the equivalent of an index card with "Cups not here, look in the pantry above the sink" written on it, you can copy the card but it won't help you in a completely different house
mowcat has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<reasv>
no, I get it
<reasv>
but it's not really that I want to store a symlink
<reasv>
what I want is the folder it links to, which is not in the IPFS home folder
<reasv>
I want to pin it, and share it through IPFS
<reasv>
but it won't let me because it's outside my user's folder
<hamnox[m]>
@reasv You could specify an absolute path to the file? Are you using the GUI?
<hamnox[m]>
Why do you have add both "." and "\symlink"?
<reasv>
both? that's just the current folder, like ./symlink on linux
<hamnox[m]>
<hamnox[m] "Why do you have add both "." and"> Oh, it looked like there was a space there. Hmm... Did you hard or soft link?
<reasv>
soft link
<reasv>
it's to another drive
<reasv>
I tried doing ipfs add -r --nocopy --dereference-args "symlink\subfolder"
<reasv>
But the result is the same error Error: cannot add filestore references outside ipfs root (C:\Users\x)
<reasv>
Weird because someone in the issue says this works on windows.

<hamnox[m]>
Hmm.. try linking the subfolder directly? That's all I can think of sorry
<reasv>
yeah that's what I did initially, but it doesn't work. The problem is IPFS won't allow me to add anything outside of IPFS_PATH
<reasv>
symlinks are supposed to solve this, but they don't
<reasv>
I ended up changing the IPFS_PATH to the root of the drive I want to share files from, but that doesn't really work in general because I want to share files from multiple drives
<reasv>
I'd need to either run a daemon for each drive, or do this in a linux WSL VM and mount all drives under it, then set the IPFS_PATH to /
<reasv>
I'll probably do the latter
<aschmahmann[m]>
Haven't played around with the filestore much, but would junctions help you if symlinks are failing?
