<Noxz> I want an engine turning lathe :)
<Noxz> fun stuff
<Noxz> I had to leave the workshop 4 hrs earlier because my puppy is apiece of shit
<Noxz> and pissed on another dog at daycare

<pie_> Noxz, lol facepalm
<pie_> pissed on or pissed off
<Noxz> he pissed ON another dog, twice
<Noxz> he is almost 9mo, non-nudered
<Noxz> and somewhat dominant
<Noxz> obviously

<nmz787> Noxz: seems like dogs pissing is a thing daycare should be taking care of :/
<Noxz> daycare is not training
<Noxz> daycare is basically play time
<Noxz> the daycare was someone's house that could look after him, not train him
<Noxz> it wasnt some corporate thing, in which case they still dont train him but they have people to do various things, such as 'handlers' that litterely just give 1:1 attention to each dog
<Noxz> which I am sure houses do as well, but likely different in the end, ie, no 10-15min, maybe it is a half hour or whatever, depends on what dude is doing
<nmz787> ah, so this wasn't expected to be an all-day or most-of-day thing?
<nmz787> just 15 mins? like so you could go get groceries or something?
<Noxz> no, it was an all day thing, x2
<Noxz> just not overnight, but they could have done it as well
<Noxz> I was at a workshop, learning Engine Turning
<Noxz> Rose & Straight line
<nmz787> I guess I was thinking peeing on another dog isn't really training... I guess I'd expect they'd spray the dogs both with a warm water hose, blow dry, and get back to watching TV or whatever the humans there do
<Noxz> that's basically what they did
<Noxz> it was on carpet, too
<nmz787> ah
<Noxz> then I guess my dude marked the skirt of their bed
<Noxz> d'oh
<nmz787> doesn't sound like a great idea for having in a dog daycare :P (carpet)
<nmz787> dang
<Noxz> yeah, there's certainly points I wonder what was up
<nmz787> by engine turning, do you mean those multi-tool machines they make out of recycled engine blocks?
<Noxz> nope..
<Noxz> I have pics of what I made..
<Noxz> engraving
<sync> pretty much obsolete by now
<Noxz> if you have time, from a master (more or less he was trained under a master who has since past away) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS_G8Vm1gyQ
<sync> but interesting to look at machines
<Noxz> yeah, there is only one american maker of machines right now, basically
<Noxz> and he teaches the advanced class ;)
<Noxz> ~10k USD
<Noxz> for the machine
<Noxz> 20k to be able to do much more
<Noxz> and the Swiss watch makers are scouping up all the old machines and just putting them in storage so others arent able to practice the craft/art
<sync> not that expensive overall but I wonder who buys them
<Noxz> sad, but competition is cmpetition
<Noxz> engravers, not jsut watchmakers
<Noxz> you can do much more than make a watch dial
<sync> yes, but who even does that without a cnc machine now
<nmz787> your work looks nice :)
<sync> fanuc and makino now have relatively cheap diamond shapers
<Noxz> thanks, there was a few goof ups, but I figured out a feel for it
<Noxz> sync, you are trying to take the person out of the work ;)
<sync> that will do sub nanometer resolution
<sync> of course
<sync> it is 2017
<Noxz> okay, but people who like high end stuff like handmade items
<Noxz> using traditional tools
<sync> there is no need for a person to make stuff like that
<Noxz> need??
<Noxz> it's art
<Noxz> it has zero function
<Noxz> but to please the eyeballs
<sync> yes, hence it is ok if it dies out
<Noxz> well, there is interest, but it isnt much
<Noxz> sorta like there is only 5 watchmaker schools in the US (mor or less)
<sync> a cnc machined dial can also please the eye
<Noxz> dying out
<sync> it will look exactly the same
<Noxz> bah
<Noxz> you could also cast it
<Noxz> infact, eventually they were able to make dies for it
<Noxz> one master engraved, then just stamp them out
<sync> well, obviously, that is how holograms are made
<sync> you use a cnc engraving machine to produce steps at the desired color and then just machine a master
<sync> and emboss or cast from the master
<sync> which is the intended application of the diamond shaping machines
<Noxz> so you need a computer to make a watch?!?
<Noxz> this was zero eletricity, hand operated
<Noxz> old swiss machines
<Noxz> powered by cranking up a weight
<sync> yes, you need a computer
<Noxz> bah
<Noxz> ;)
<sync> so what
<Noxz> okay, remember you are also talking to someone who wants to build his own SEM for the purpose of looking at tiny watch parts
<Noxz> why not just use a microscope?!?
<Noxz> ;)
<sync> all actual watchmaking companies here use cnc machined parts
<sync> to keep up with the demand
<Noxz> there is an escence of handmade from scratch vs computer asisted
<sync> and just make handmade stuff for marketing wank
<Noxz> "all"
<sync> yes, all.
<Noxz> so, that guy, rw smith, uses cnc on one part
<Noxz> from what I understan
<Noxz> his timepieces sell for I think a min of 20k
<Noxz> gbp
<Noxz> a few handfuls of them a year (he has a few in his staff that help)
<Noxz> but completely from scratch
<Noxz> the only point I remember him saying he uses CNC is for machining the border for the crystal (the glass face) for a perfect water tight seal
<Noxz> accuracy is worth it in some cases
<Noxz> but, really, you arent buying a modern mechanical watch for it's praticality
<Noxz> because it isnt
<Noxz> it cant compete with quartz
<Noxz> you can have high end quartz watches too, with handmade gears, or rather highly precise ones
<Noxz> when demand is high, you raise your price, and add a waiting list
<Noxz> economics right there
<Noxz> anywho
<Noxz> back to work ;)
<sync> I do own a few mechanical watches but I don't get the hype
<Noxz> hype?!?
<Noxz> there's hype?
<Noxz> there is a resurgence, yes
<Noxz> but it's just thre bound from the quartz era
<Noxz> now it's the smart watch era
<sync> well, the resurgance is the hype
<Noxz> I dont think it is hype though
<sync> my phone never looses its time
<Noxz> you dont buy a mechanical watch to be 100% accurate forever
<Noxz> also I cant ttrp my phone to my wrist and make it look good
<Noxz> strap
<sync> so what do I buy it for if it does not tell me the accurate time at all times
<Noxz> would you believe status symbol?
<Noxz> like, I have a 'fuck you' watch
<Noxz> a handful made every year, fairly limited
<Noxz> anyways, I gotta work..
<nmz787> sync: to be honest, my phone and PC do sometimes show really wacky times... until I open the Time/Clock GUI, uncheck "sync from internet" then re-check it
<sync> never happened to me
<sync> ntp has been reliable for me
<nmz787> happened just last week
<sync> Noxz: but that is the issue with it and also why I don't get them, I don't change my opinion or actions based on how much money someone spent on something
<sync> same with cars, what good does it do if it looks nice or is expensive when it cannot deliver
<Noxz> it does deliver, just not what you want
<Noxz> it's jewelry
<Noxz> somewhat functional
<Noxz> but limited
<sync> if its primary function is looks it does not deliver
<Noxz> opinion which is highly objected
<Noxz> gold looks better than plastic, yeah?
<sync> no, waste of a precious metal that could go into something with an actual function
<Noxz> you think plastic looks better than gold?
<Noxz> you have strange tastes, sir
<Noxz> k, I actually gotta work, took yesterday off for the workshop
<sync> I could care less how it looks, if it is supposed to look golden one can always deposit TiN on it
<sync> same reason why I run steelies on some of my cars, most alloy wheels are heavier than the steel ones, thus provide no performance benefit outside from better brake cooling
<sync> but that can be solved by other measures
<nmz787> wait, I thought most alloys were lighter than steel
<nmz787> maybe that's just aluminum?
<nmz787> do they make Al wheels?
<sync> most "alloy" wheels are mostly Al
<sync> some, more expensive ones are Mg alloys
<sync> and those are actually lighter than steel wheels
<sync> it is a tradeoff
<nmz787> ah, "Mag" wheels
<sync> light wheels are not strong enough to be curbed or to be run through potholes
<nmz787> I say the same thing about gold jewelry and using it as currency... seems a lot more valuable for putting to utility purpose
<nmz787> rather than saying it has innate value
<nmz787> though I do wear a simple 24k gold band
<nmz787> since I got married
