Peppernrino I too want to make an ISP. I was thinking on upgrading the internet package to the max which is 200/20 and put a wireless up there in my roof and put another wireless point-to-point antena at the neighbors house and make them pay for access

so it appears I now have a fish (just for the night tho) and gerbals in my room now :I
<RoyalPhay>
someone in my hall bought 2 gerbals and got sick of them so he threw them outside 2 days ago......

<RoyalPhay>
so head straight, look to the right with eyes only
<Dashaiva>

<RoyalPhay>
well... I'm glad I've narrowed down the cause. this also means I can try to avoid it
<RoyalPhay>
exactly. thanks
<RoyalPhay>
but only right... not left or up or down
<Dashaiva>
Next step is to tell someone that can do something about it

no worries. working on that now

BUT this means I can move stuff around now!!!! I just have to concentrate where I look

so this is actually rly exciting for me

I started running boinc on an ancient laptop I saved from the dumpster. Single core CPU. I put yoyo on it. Estimated time remaining: 26 hours
<Mithian>
well that's good, glad it's progress for you
<ltkeklulz>
My Raspberry Pis are significantly better than this
<Dashaiva>
You got finance and wuprop on it?
<RoyalPhay>
The physician's (and I agree with her) analysis is it could be getting off Zoloft. It can cause dizziness in a strange manner
<RoyalPhay>
I need to get my laptop up as well.... to farm
<ltkeklulz>
I have wuprop, but it's funny that you think windows could function on this thing
<Dashaiva>
I engaged my iGPU's today
<RoyalPhay>
the hdd in it died last night completely so I put in a new one
<RoyalPhay>
I just need to fix the OS situation
<ltkeklulz>
I need to figure out why boinc won't work on openSUSE
<ltkeklulz>
I think it's an issue with my firewall
<RoyalPhay>
openSUSE :v
<ltkeklulz>
I'm too tired to troubleshoot right now
<RoyalPhay>
it'd be cool to have a comp run without an OS
<ltkeklulz>
You mean headless?
<RoyalPhay>
like sorta a cluster... just control it's hardware from another computer
<RoyalPhay>
mhmm
<RoyalPhay>
is that possible?
<ltkeklulz>
That's what I do with one of my Pis
<RoyalPhay>
I'd do that to 3 of my computers if so
<Dashaiva>
I'm wondering how far up collatze i can get with 3 iGPU
<ltkeklulz>
just run the cli
<RoyalPhay>
2 laptops and... idk what else
<ltkeklulz>
SSH to control it
<RoyalPhay>
the cli?
<ltkeklulz>
Command line interface
<ltkeklulz>
It's what the terminal emulates in linux
<RoyalPhay>
think I could control them from my "server"? it's a local custom server basically
<Dashaiva>
wtf is going on here
<ltkeklulz>
Yeah. You just use SSH
<RoyalPhay>
so I just turn on the computer and I'd be set?
<RoyalPhay>
like.. it'd work literally with no hdd????

why do people keep putting stuff in my room

Morning
<CoinFlare>
Morning custom
<customminer>
How's it going?
<CoinFlare>
Been too busy to look at gridcoin for a while. Finally starting to look a bit better - thinking about getting a gtx1080 and getting started again
<CoinFlare>
Only, they haven't actually been released yet
<customminer>
The 1080 looks pretty epic!
<customminer>
More powerful than a Titan & cheapest apparently
<CoinFlare>
It looks very nice, yes, especially in a power draw vs compute evaluation
<CoinFlare>
That's one of the things I like about BOINC - with all the stats it becomes fairly obvious how good a card is once it is on the market
<Chick3nman>
yo
<Chick3nman>
lol 1080 != titan-x
<Chick3nman>
not even unless you are running it at 2114MHz like at the demo
<Chick3nman>
it barely out does a 980ti from the math and specs so far
<Chick3nman>
no idea what benchmarks will look like
<CoinFlare>
For some workloads it may seem the 1080 is faster at lower power - but yeah, we will see once the card is in the hands of real people and not just marketing =)
<Chick3nman>
but also 4gb less VRAM, slower BUS speed, and overall smaller die size
<Chick3nman>
that means yes its more efficient
<Chick3nman>
but at 180W over a smaller DIE
<CoinFlare>
Ah, you are thinking thermal?
<Chick3nman>
pushing high OC with water cooling will require a more efficient CPU block, however a smaller overal radiator
<Chick3nman>
so really
<CoinFlare>
Hm yeah, well, true
<Chick3nman>
its not the biggest thermal change
<Chick3nman>
youd still need to deal with it
<CoinFlare>
It is going to get interesting when they start using the Hynix HBM2 modules and run them in paralellel - THEN we will see some crazy bandwidth on those cards
<Chick3nman>
lol
<Chick3nman>
memory bandwidth is not our bottleneck for almost anything
<Chick3nman>
except for high ass resolution
<CoinFlare>
For FFT it is
<Chick3nman>
but is it really?
<CoinFlare>
A lot of BOINC is FFT calcs - like SETI and Einstein
<Chick3nman>
can the CPU generate enough work to make that tbe bottleneck?
okae has joined #gridcoin
<Chick3nman>
HBM2 only shifts the bottleneck from the memory to the next slowest part
RTW93 has joined #gridcoin
<Chick3nman>
if the MEM limit is just barely under the CPUs limit
<RTW93>
moin
<Chick3nman>
there will be little if any performance gain from more bandwidth
<CoinFlare>
I think Einstein moved everything to the GPU, so the bottleneck will probably still be on there somewhere - maybe on the PCIe3 too for a bit of it. Dunno
<Chick3nman>
depends on what they are doing
<Chick3nman>
the biggest bottleneck ive run into on GPUs
<Chick3nman>
is not RAM or BUS or anything like that
<Chick3nman>
its cache
<Chick3nman>
there just isnt a comparable cache on a GPU
<Chick3nman>
to a CPUs L2/L3
<Chick3nman>
a hashing algorithm that uses cache based lookup tables is not limited by out ability to do the math on the ALUs, its limited by the amount of math that can be given to them since the lookup table operations are slow af
<CoinFlare>
Maybe that will change - the HBMs and GDDR5x are kinda slow (latency) but high bandwidth. For BOINC it doesn't matter much but for games it does somewhat. They will probably add more on-die cache for that reason
<Chick3nman>
ehh
<CoinFlare>
But that's for next gen, let's get 1080 first =)
<Chick3nman>
i kinda doubt it
<Chick3nman>
these are gaming focused
<Chick3nman>
the P100 is compute focused
<Chick3nman>
and iirc it was a bit of a dissapointment for anyone not doing mahcine learning with VRAM limited neural networks
<Chick3nman>
it had 1 block of CUDA cores per SM
<Chick3nman>
so distributing work is a bit different for things like parallel compute
<CoinFlare>
It was also hellishly expensive
<Chick3nman>
the lower ROPs on the 1080 vs 980ti/titan-x as well as the limit of only 5 stream procs is interesting
<Chick3nman>
not sure if they are holding back for the new Ti/Titan or if the 14nm means they had to cutback to make the die production feasible
<Chick3nman>
what gets me is that the meory bus and bandwidth are that of the 980
<Chick3nman>
only the clock is 3GHz higher
<Chick3nman>
rasing bandwidth from 224GB/s to 320 effectively
<Chick3nman>
on a 256bit bus
<Chick3nman>
if they had gone 384 or 512
<Chick3nman>
they could be saving an assload in clock and power and could split the chips into a group the size of the group on the titan-x 6+6
<Chick3nman>
and have just as much
<Chick3nman>
no idea why they did that
<Chick3nman>
unless they are running all 3 (1080,1080TI?,Titan?) on the same PCB
<Chick3nman>
and just adding memory and a different die to it
<Chick3nman>
lot of interesting choices imo, some that i dont understand at this point

which is better to focus projects crunching on, high magnitude or high RAC, or some combination?
<RoyalPhay>
personally I like the first
<RoyalPhay>
so focused projects
<customminer>
high magnitude is where it's at

mag is your project RAC relative to project total RAC (% of total project RAC = Mag)

<moisesm123>
curly-brace, it uses the Gridcoin Asia Explorer API
<curly-brace>
we need moar anonumity
<customminer>
curly-brace: No, like most cryptocurrencies, gridcoin is a public ledger.
<moisesm123>
yup
<moisesm123>
^
<moisesm123>
every transaction you make is made public but anonymous
<curly-brace>
like in bitcoin
<moisesm123>
exactly
<curly-brace>
its lame
<customminer>
anonymous as long as you don't link your address to your identity
<customminer>
completely anonymous cryptocurrencies are going to get regulated into non-existence.
<curly-brace>
would be cool if there was no possibilities to track transactions at all
<curly-brace>
customminer, why do you think so?
<customminer>
curly-brace: In the past, politicians have claimed terrorists are using cryptocurrencies for funding, they'll likely ignore the public ledgers and go after the anon cryptos. Whilst you cannot prevent a crypto from existing, you can punish exchanges in your geographical area.
<curly-brace>
hmm
<moisesm123>

even anonymous currencies are regulated. (ex. you can't carry more than $10k into the country, bank deposits over 10k(?) are reported to the feds, etc).
<Hooker63>
maybe not small individual cash transactions, but big ones? monitored.
<curly-brace>

well, I remember I purchased my laptop which costed 1,xxx something I don´t remember and the bank called me to tell them where the money went :p
<curly-brace>
didn't thought about the fact that crypto sometimes need to be echanged into fiat
<Hooker63>
so, all my CPID are corrupt, still showing 'Investor'. but I found a post from Katiee that says it doesn't matter if pool mining. I feel better
richardTNT has joined #gridcoin
<curly-brace>
customminer, what about tor and i2p exchanges?
<curly-brace>
primary pyrpose of crypto is fund-transfers
<curly-brace>
for example in my country you can't use anonymously more then near 200$
<customminer>
curly-brace: TOR/I2P - no idea, never been on them. I'd probably not trust them.
<curly-brace>
so it will be pain in the ass to exchange into fiat any crypto and stay anon

question: 5 days ago I joined 2 new projects (nfs@home and distributeddataminingFor reasons I can not fathom, when I list cpids both of these projects show 0 RAC. Both project web sites show RAC values above 10K. Gridcoin CPID leader board only shows distributeddatamining but with 20+K RAC. Why would these two projects show as 0 RAC when I list cpi
<HeyMerlin>
ds.
<Sander96>

<Sander96>
Guessing no?
<HeyMerlin>
Yes
<Sander96>
same email when registering?
<Sander96>
well
<Sander96>
otherwise it wouldn't show in list cpids
<Gary760>
thx
<HeyMerlin>
both are showing as joined to gridcoin. yes same email on all 6 projects I'm with.
<HeyMerlin>
in computing and credit sections: 3M credit, 242K RAC, and 12 valid jobs processed. I assume those are verified as I do not see a please that mentioned "verified" wus
<HeyMerlin>
that should have been 12K valid jobs processed.
<Sander96>
strange
<HeyMerlin>
also with ddm showing up in Katiee's calculator for my cpid, why would it not show RAC > 0 in list cpids?
<Sander96>
probably still needs to update?
<Sander96>
maybe check the neural network
<Sander96>
that should be the same as the calculator
<HeyMerlin>

actually, that is a thing also... every since I have been running the gridcoin wallet (since July) on both Win7 an Win10, updated regularly, the Advanced menu has never worked for me. I am logged in as a non-admin user but run the wallet from an administrator command prompt.
<fkinglag>
hmm how odd HeyMerlin
<HeyMerlin>
Ya, I have been mostly ignoring that one as I figured it might be the way I am launching the wallet. Does not mater if I right click and run as admin or use an elevated command prompt.
<HeyMerlin>
Is there a a console command for checking the Neural Network?
<[-SaRaFiNa-]>

Interestingly the wallet shows the mag at 3760 but then again I find online lags the wallet, I suspect due to update frequency.

hihi

<HeyMerlin>
aaand I dropped 1.4M in credit in the last day!
<fkinglag>
Haigo if you have duplicate CPID issue then it may actually be something of a email problem between different projects
<fkinglag>
or if you just have the same email across all the projects you do work for with the original CPID you shouldn't be having any issue :/
<fkinglag>
if the case is of the latter then I suggest just being patient and waiting until the problem solves itself through the self-correcting that the blockchain may do to get everything back to the way it should be
<Haigo>
I don't have duplicate CPID, it just changed itself last night! All email the same in all accounts, same username, same password!
<Haigo>
I have higher than average RAC in ALL projects and total credit is showing as about 10x that of average!
<ltkeklulz>
Did you run any projects for a while, then remove them, then add them back?
<Haigo>
Yes I did! Could that be it? Have we solved something?
<ltkeklulz>
Yes! That's what happened to me
<ltkeklulz>
Your CPID merges to the oldest one
<Haigo>
Aha.... So, is it just a matter of waiting again?
<ltkeklulz>
If you ran a project, then removed it and added more projects, the ones you added would have merged with the next oldest. When you added that other project back, they all merged with that one
<ltkeklulz>
It'll probably fix itself on the next superblock, but another beacon might be necessary if it doesn't
<Haigo>
OK, so any ideas when I can expect to see a positive magnitude now? That would be good - I've manually sent beacon earlier this evening,...... fingers crossed!
<ltkeklulz>
Once you see your "new" CPID in the neural network, you should see magnitude within 24 hrs
<ltkeklulz>
Though, it could take longer so don't panic if you don't see any. It might just be taking a little longer
<Haigo>
Brilliant! I'd have usually thrown in the towel by now, but really do like the idea of GridCoin and helping science/humanity rather than just burning electricity!!
<fkinglag>
