FUCK
<ec>
Zerigo is shutting down, in TWO DAYS, without notifying me
<jfhbrook>
that's pretty insane ec
<ec>
frantically rushing to export my data,
<jfhbrook>
who are you switching to? do you know?
<jfhbrook>
two days is outrageous
<ec>
they suggest a โsync to Route 53โ option, which requires Amazon to activate my account โ takes who knows how long,
<ec>
googled around for scripts to use their API to dump, looks like maybe they already shut down API access (getting UNAUTHORIZED no matter what I do),
<ec>
arghaegrdhtfjygu
<ec>
I only found out by accident!
<ec>
I'm leaving town soon and wanted to set up a VPN and dynamic DNS so I can backup via Time Machine when I'm in Alaska over the next few months,
<ec>
and I was looking to see if my long-time DNS provider had dynamic-DNS support, and BOOM
<jfhbrook>
can you realistically do it by-hand in a day?
<ec>
idk couple hundred
<ec>
nah not that many, maybe a hundred
<jfhbrook>
>_<

<ljharb>
that's a lot of domains
<ljharb>
i think i have like 40
<jfhbrook>
I have, uh, 2 now
<jfhbrook>
jesusabdullah.net and trashfire.xyz
<jfhbrook>
I'm gonna let one of those lapse pretty soon
<ec>
trashier lmao
<ec>
I love that you say โone of thoseโ
<ec>
can't decide which to stick with, jf? :P
<jfhbrook>
nah nah
<jfhbrook>
trashfire is just a great url
<jfhbrook>
like it's not as good as trashfi.re would have been but that's ok
<jfhbrook>
trashfire.xyz is currently a broken hack project so I'm gonna just like, host my personal site on there
<jfhbrook>
except probably turn it into a wiki
<ec>
AHHH ALL OF MY EMAIL IS GOING TO HELL
<ec>
MY GODDAMN REGISTRAR DOESN'T SUPPORT GLUE RECORDS EXCEPT BY MANUALLY HANDLING THE SETUP OVER E-MAIL
<ec>
AND THEY'RE IN NEW ZEALAND,
<ec>
AND THEY DON'T HAVE A PHONE-NUMBER
<jfhbrook>
idk what a glue record is
<ec>
hack that solves the chicken-n-egg scenarios in DNS
<ec>
it's only relevant for nameservers resolving other nameservers
<ec>
AHHHHH THIS IS SUCH A CLUSTERFUCK
<ljharb>
yeah wtf is a glue record
<ec>
I'm the only person who knows this?
<ec>
wow, that's a shock
<ec>
ljharb: if your domain's nameservers are subdomains of the domain itself, you need additional โglue recordsโ at the TLD nameserver
<jfhbrook>
I've mostly dealt with a records and cnames
<ec>
sooooo if you have ljharbis.cool., and the nameservers are listed as ns1.ljharbis.cool. and ns2.ljharbis.cool.,
<ec>
then DNS needs the cool. rootservers to *actually hold the IPs* for ns1.ljharbis.cool. etc, and they need to match what the servers at ns1.ljharbis.cool. hold for "ns1.ljharbis.cool."
<jfhbrook>
you're hosting your own nameservers?
<jfhbrook>
I thought you were using route 53
<ec>
lol, obscuring the nameserver records โ so-called โwhite-label nameserversโ
<ec>
so elliottcable.name, for instance, shows a.ns.yreality.net, instead of grsgtgnoh.angrsns516-awsdns525.fuckboy or whatever
