<ericxdu> C-Keen: probably. I don't see anything in their faq that indicates they re-render pages or anything weird
<ericxdu> I've noticed people are dissatisfied with the fragmentation of Android platform. If this is due to all the non-libre forks of Android, what other tangible bad has come out of that situation?
<ericxdu> non-libre, non-free, proprietary re-licensed forks of a permissive-licensed OS

<jfred[m]> Though libre vs. proprietary isn't the biggest part of that - the kernel is GPL and the better manufacturers follow that and release the code
<jfred[m]> But I don't think libre software alone is enough, we need a culture change
<jfred[m]> (In the mobile world that is - the desktop Linux world has a great free software culture IMO)

<lkcl> ericxdu: the user already gave them their money, so yeah, why the fuck should the manufacturer care??

<jfred[m]> ericxdu: Unlikely - the people frustrated by fragmentation are mostly users trying to use devices a few years after their release, not the manufacturers. (And developers who can't assume most of their users are even able to upgrade their phones.)
<jfred[m]> The manufacturers have to maintain n branches of the kernel, where n is the number of devices they're currently supporting, but that may be less effort than trying to upstream their changes.
<jfred[m]> And as Luke said, once they have your money, they have little incentive to care

<lkcl> jfred[m]: this is why it's important to break proceessing units out of the control of the manufacturers.
<lkcl> EOMA68 modularisation forces processors to be considered as general purpose computers and the housings as merely peripherals
<lkcl> just like the pc industry 15-25 years ago

<jfred[m]> But yes, EOMA68 definitely helps to better align manufacturers' incentives with the long-term needs of their customers
