<kingneil> Hello everyone. I Just heard about the neo900
<kingneil> Only allowing the CPU access to the microphone is certainly interesting... but frankly, I'm not sure that I can ever trust a live microphone ever again
<wpwrak> kingneil: you can always gnaw through the trace and connect it through a switch you attach somewhere :)
<xman> Well that would depend on many factors, like the OS your running, the hardware, the manufacturer perhaps and maybe chip makers as well.
<kingneil> On my phone... I literally use a needle and hammer to smash in the mic... and then I use a plug-in mic...
<kingneil> that's how paranoid i am
<xman> heh, well that pretty good way to make sure. But with project like this and other you could be able to save the smashing. But with software I don't think you can really ever say safe and networked anymore.
<dTal> couldn
<dTal> 't you just tape over it? :p
<xman> todays computer could piece together the mumbles ;)
<kingneil> I'm not sure that a networked computer can ever be safe.. I agree with that... TAILS and QUBES are promising... but I wonder about the NSA just sending you a fake version of the ISO file
<DocScrutinizer05> there's MD5 for that
<kingneil> yeah good point about MD5, SHA etc.. true i guess
<xman> well the only way is to become well versed in cryto tech and maybe programing to compile all your software.
<DocScrutinizer05> at a certain level of paranoia, give your friend abroad a phonecall and ask them to open the website and read the MD5sum for you
<xman> otherwie you depend on other no matter what you use.
<wpwrak> of course, that doesn't help if the GENTICALLY ENGINEERED BRAINWORMS (!) THEY placed into DocScrutinizer05's head make him sign THEIR binary ....
<xman> hah, nice.
<kingneil> I haven't seen a single person break through the QUBES sandbox yet.. Someone should pay for a full code audit like they did with TrueCrypt
* DocScrutinizer05 AFK
<xman> the nice thing with neo project is they're putting all the hardware out in the open for you to see. And tell you when there's any issues.
<xman> So this is one of the reason why I like this project over some others especially android based. Which I fine kind of missing the point.

<DocScrutinizer05> anyway for Neo900 mic to go rogue, you need a tainted kernel that configures the codec chip in a way you didn't request for
<DocScrutinizer05> meh he's gone
* DocScrutinizer05 AFK again
<wpwrak> and at some point also the acceleration sensor (BMX055) becomes a problem, with a bandwidth of up to 1 kHz
<xman> hehe, perhaps there was a noise on the dial up line ;). I not a fan of using the word paranoid, since it has such a negative connotation.
<DocScrutinizer05> barometer has too low bandwidth, no?
<wpwrak> yeah, i guess. didn't see it any number at a quick glance
<DocScrutinizer05> baro makes for a nice infrasound mic though
<DocScrutinizer05> possibly even detecting heartbeat within a distance
<wpwrak> then, when detecting some arrhythmia, make noise to startle you even more
<DocScrutinizer05> you could use camera for that too
<DocScrutinizer05> even a cheesy VGA camera can detect the miniscule color changes in your face from each heartbeat
<dTal> that research paper blew my mind
<DocScrutinizer05> hehe
<DocScrutinizer05> indeed
<dTal> although it's worth noting that you have to filter it to a specific frequency you're looking for anyway
<DocScrutinizer05> well
<dTal> it's like time-domain EQ
<DocScrutinizer05> isn't that kaiman filter? when you have a pretty good idea what you're expecting to find in the noise
<DocScrutinizer05> then otoh it's prolly not that suited for arrhythmia
<dTal> depends how wide you can make the frequency band and still detect the amplitude change
<DocScrutinizer05> combining audio and video would make a lot of sense for that
<dTal> I imagine it's a trade-off
<DocScrutinizer05> well "audio" as in infrasound by barometer
<DocScrutinizer05> I know they detect humanoid liveforms hidden in trucks etc, at some frontiers and high security objects, probably with a similar method based on infrasound
<dTal> "humanoid lifeforms" -- you mean people
<dTal> DocScrutinizer05 are you an alien
<DocScrutinizer05> well, I'm pretty sure it will detect each heartbeat that's within the range
<DocScrutinizer05> so all primates will trigger an alarm
<DocScrutinizer05> they are interested in immigrants or terrorists though
<DocScrutinizer05> which are usually people
<dTal> fair enough, you're probably right that the tech won't know the difference between a human and a chimp :p
<dTal> although a spider monkey might look odd
<dTal> and a kangaroo might not, they're kind human sized and shaped
<DocScrutinizer05> yep
<DocScrutinizer05> I wonder how hard it would be, technically, to eliminate all heartbeat infrasound emission by antisound
<DocScrutinizer05> not interference but simply phase inverted countersound
herpderphurr has joined #neo900
<dTal> that's interference
<dTal> depends on the frequencies in heartbeats
<dTal> they're pretty low so you have a shot

<wpwrak> DocScrutinizer05: you'll notice few more red boxes. they're things that aren't finished in the schematics, even if we may have a detailed design elsewhere (e.g., SIM switch)
vakkov has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<wpwrak> so i shifted the definition of "unfinished" a bit. in the regular v2 block diagram, the SIM switch would show up as "designed", since it would then land in nik's queue
<wpwrak> in any case, the size of this set of those critters should rapidly shrink to zero. then i can use red for something else, e.g., unintentional sources of global warming :)
<wpwrak> it's kinda cute that eagle pretends to let you choose not to be bothers with update notifications. of course, it completely ignores whatever you ask it to do, and keeps on pestering you ...

<wpwrak> regarding gpio extenders, this is the chip we found to look best: http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/exar-corporation/XRA1201PIL24-F/1016-1712-ND/2791210
<wpwrak> most of the system is in the 1.8 V domain, but there are a few things at 3.3 V. the XAR1201P (when operating at 1.8 V) can also interface with that, as long as it's only for input or open-drain.

<wpwrak> ahycka, ceene: i'm thinking of posting this https://neo900.org/stuff/paste/Chah3Ohm in response to this http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=91142&page=282
<wpwrak> ahycka, ceene: is what i wrote okay with you ? anything to add/change ?
<wpwrak> i didn't add an introduction because a) i wouldn't know what exactly to write, and b) that could also go into some later, more detailed post. but if you want to add some words already, that would of course be fine as well
