<nahom> NiteHawk: Are you there?
viccuad has joined #linux-sunxi
<NiteHawk> hi nahom
vishnup has joined #linux-sunxi
<nahom> Hi
<nahom> NiteHawk: I've been downloading and trying new rootfs all day
<nahom> I've found some that work, headless. ArchLinuxArm works, and linaro-vivid-nano both work but both are headless and also it doesn't bring up the network interface
<nahom> linaro-alip works but that's the one where the kb and mouse aren't working. But the network works...
<NiteHawk> did you come across / find any where your mouse and kb worked?
<nahom> I don't really need a gui, so I'm ok with the headless but the network not working is an issue. Can you suggest a good stable ubuntu flavored rootfs?
<nahom> Yes, on the other two headless distros the keyboard works.
<nahom> It drops you off on a login prompt and the keyboard works...
<NiteHawk> i suppose those are based on newer (mainline) kernels, maybe?
<nahom> What rootfs would you suggest?
<NiteHawk> as i said: i'm a gentoo dude, have no experience with the ubuntu variants. i have to admit that Ubunu MATE looks very tempting, but i don't know how much actual work that would require to get it running smoothly on A20-based hardware
<nahom> I tried that too... it didn't work
<NiteHawk> Ubuntu provided more complete packages for arm up to and including 13.10 - but after that it seems there's only ubuntu core for armhf
<nahom> That didn't work either :)
<NiteHawk> did you try one of the "server" images? e.g. from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/13.10/release/
<nahom> Haven't tried that
<nahom> If I were to stick with the linaro-nano headless, how would I go about fixing the network?
<NiteHawk> where did you hit roadblocks? network "not working" sounds rather broad - with a suitable kernel (and possibly modules) you should have the network device available (independent of the particular rootfs), maybe the startup scripts just didn't bring it "up"?
reinforce has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<nahom> The only interface available is loopback
khuey|away is now known as khuey
<nahom> And funny thing too... they didn't have neither vi nor nano... so I couldn't do some proper exploring
mnr has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
<nahom> with the network not workign, I coulden't install them either
<NiteHawk> you're referring to http://snapshots.linaro.org/ubuntu/images/nano/, right?
<nahom> yes
viccuad has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<NiteHawk> nahom: hmm... peeking at the packages/contents indicates there should at least be net-tools and dhclient available. but as i mentioned before: the network device itself should be a matter of the kernel (+modules), and thus independent of the rootfs. did you try checking dmesg output for anything network-related?
viccuad has joined #linux-sunxi
<nahom> I haven't checked dmesg yet.. let me do that
<NiteHawk> it's of course a bit of a show-stopper if apt can't work due to not having a network connection :/
ssvb has joined #linux-sunxi
<nahom> NiteHawk: there's this message in the dmesg => sun7i_dwmac 1c50000.ethernet: no regulator found
naobsd has joined #linux-sunxi
<NiteHawk> that's the 3.4.x kernel variant, isn't it?
<nahom> Yes
<NiteHawk> if you can do away with a GUI (or restrict yourself to the "simple fb" implementation), you might try a recent mainline kernel instead
<NiteHawk> mainline uses a different network driver for sun7i/A20 (stmmaceth)
<nahom> I have already git'd the latest kernel, so, let me give that a try!
<nahom> Thanks!
<nahom> NiteHawk: You think there's anything I need to change in the menuconfig before compiling the kernel?
<NiteHawk> i wouldn't expect so - sunxi_defconfig should be quite suitable for A20
<nahom> ok
<NiteHawk> just remember to update your .dtb file according to the one you get from this kernel compilation, so it matches your kernel version

<vishnup> ssvb: ping
<ssvb> vishnup: hi
viccuad has joined #linux-sunxi
<vishnup> ssvb: I've tested fel patch on A83T Devboard, It jumps to SPL
<vishnup> as there is no support for DRAM init. DRAM init timeout
<vishnup> is this test enough for now, so that I'll include A83T in fel patch
<ssvb> vishnup: was it a test with the boot0 blob? or what kind of SPL are you talking about?
<vishnup> not boot0 blob, I dont have it
<vishnup> I tested fel spl u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin
<vishnup> It jumped to U-boot SPL and timeout while DRAM init
<ssvb> how did you build this u-boot?
kongo has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb> but in any case, if you get messages on the serial console, then most likely the fel tool is indeed working correctly
viccuad has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<vishnup> ssvb: A33 and A83T has same serial address, I used A33 uboot binary.
<ssvb> vishnup: thanks, I see
<vishnup> I'll send v2 of fel patch shortly
<ssvb> just include the information about how you have tested it in the commit message
<vishnup> okie
khuey is now known as khuey|away
<ssvb> vishnup: btw, just curious, is MMU enabled on A83T or not?
<vishnup> MMU not enabled for A83T as well
<ssvb> OK thanks, looks like that's how it is on all the newer SoC variants
pmattern_ has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb> anyone with A23 around here?
<jemk> I've tested it on H3 too, it works.
<jemk> But its interesting that boot0 gives 196kb/s write speed, but u-boot spl only 90kb/s
pmattern has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
<ssvb> jemk: do you have SPL for H3?
<jemk> I'm working on it
doppo has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
robogoat has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<ssvb> jemk: cool
<ssvb> jemk: how did you get these write speed numbers?
<jemk> It only needs cleanup, should be ready pretty soon
<jemk> fel -v write zImage
<NiteHawk> i don't think the fel timing / speed calculation is particularly accurate
<ssvb> jemk: and which commands were run before that? I wonder about the differences between the boot0 and u-boot spl setups?
robogoat has joined #linux-sunxi
<jemk> fel spl with boot0, then test -> 196kb. Reset. fel spl with u-boot spl, then test -> 96Kb/s
<ssvb> jemk: interesting, does 'fel spl boot0' return control back to FEL mode?
<jemk> (boot0 is patched to jump back to fel)
<ssvb> ah, ok
<ssvb> and the u-boot spl is your experimental code with a working dram init?
<ssvb> NiteHawk: for transferring really small files it is indeed not very accurate (for example, the main u-boot blob), but for bigger files the accuracy should be much better
<jemk> ssvb: its the code from my github repo (only uart) with dram init added. cpu clock, voltages and so aren't changed yet
<ssvb> jemk: then the CPU clock speed is the most likely culprit
<ssvb> jemk: there is a memcpy loop running somewhere as a part of this operation, so enabling the I-cache for the BROM code, branch prediction and write combining for DRAM makes it faster
<jemk> possible, its 408 (or 480, don't remember), but i though boot0 wouldn't change it either
<jemk> need to recheck that, but first i'll finish the dram
