<Kesava> Hello all. I'm pretty excited about ordering a cubieboard, but am just wondering how it works with a 3.5" 2TB hard drive. Do I need external power for it to run? If so, is there any way that I can still use the SATA cable or would I end up having to connect it via USB?
<Kesava> !ls
<lunra> With 3.5" drives, you will need external power, sorry
<lunra> You can still use the SATA cable but you have to use external power (but the ground lines must be connected together)
<lunra> There have been people that have successfully used 3.5" HDDs, with both the cubie and the drive powered by an ATX PSU iirc
<Kesava> Well I have an external hard drive enclosure that I can put my 2TB 3.5" in. It has external power and I could then connect to it with USB. That would be the simplest thing. My only concern is whether 1080p video will run fine over USB 2.0. Any idea?
<GargantuaSauce> depending on the usb/sata bridge it should be fine
<Kesava> I currently only use my PS3 for media, and it uses like 200 watt and only has a 320GB hard drive, so it is a big waste for only watching movies/shows. So a Cubieboard would be awesome to replace it.
<Kesava> It has HDMI out, so that is perfect. The only thing I have to work out is connecting my 2TB 3.5" hard drive.,
<GargantuaSauce> you could also plug the sata right into the cubieboard and use the enclosure to power both it and the hd
<Kesava> You mean if the cubieboard has a more powerful supply, it can run a 3.5"? So instead of USB I could power it with something else? If so, what sort of voltage/amperage is safe?
<GargantuaSauce> a 3.5" drive requires 12v to run
<GargantuaSauce> as well as 5v which the cubieboard runs on
<Kesava> You're right. My enclosure's adapter puts out 12 volts @ 2 amps.
<GargantuaSauce> the current requirement is usually printed on the drive's label
<GargantuaSauce> and the cubieboard requires up to 2As
<GargantuaSauce> so if the enclosure can supply 5v at 2A more than the harddrive requires you can use it to power both
<GargantuaSauce> otherwise find another source of 12v and 5v with the required capacity
<Kesava> The hard drive label says +5v 0.75A and +12v 0.75A.
<GargantuaSauce> come to think of it the enclosure's onboard buck regulator probably can't do much more than an amp
<GargantuaSauce> so you may need to power the cubieboard separately, in which case you need to tie the grounds together like lunra said
<GargantuaSauce> (and pray both wallwarts are isolated)
vinifm has quit [Quit: Saindo]
<Kesava> I can get my hands on another adapter easily enough, if I know what to get. I don't really understand what specifications it would need to have to power both. How many volt/amp?
<GargantuaSauce> 5v, >2A
<Kesava> So the hard drive will run at 5v?
<Kesava> I mean it says it on the label, but how can it also run at 12v?
<Kesava> Is there a difference?
<GargantuaSauce> no, it needs 12
<GargantuaSauce> the enclosure provides 5 by stepping down the 12v
<Kesava> Is 12v 3 amp sufficient? Or would 4 amp be better?
<GargantuaSauce> your enclosure's current adapter will work fine
<GargantuaSauce> to power the harddrive
<GargantuaSauce> you just need 5v in addition to that for the cubieboard
<Kesava> How do I tie the grounds together and why? I can also just get a 12v 4A power supply and use the pin, in order to power both at the same time. I'd much prefer to do that than power both separately if possible.
<GargantuaSauce> what do you mean by the pin
<GargantuaSauce> ideally you'd use a single power supply that does >1A at 12v and >3A at 5v
<Kesava> the jack
<GargantuaSauce> you could also use a 12v power supply and a step-down converter that gives you 5v from that
herdingcat has joined #cubieboard
<GargantuaSauce> yes, though you don't need the 3.3v rail that provides
<Kesava> Yes but that's the only one I could find on ebay.
<Kesava> Would having a higher amp, say 5amp 12volt power supply matter? Does it only put out what is required or is that too much power?
<GargantuaSauce> the current rating of a power supply is an upper limit
<GargantuaSauce> so nothing wrong with a higher rating except when you bring efficiency into the equation, which varies a lot from design to design anyway
<Kesava> I see. Well I just found a dual power supply, 12v and 5v but it's only .75a. :(
<GargantuaSauce> if you have an old pc power supply handy they are very easy to convert to use for this sort of thing
<Kesava> I don't, but I could find one if necessary. I just want to find the simplest way to do it. I'm looking for dual power supplies right now, if I can't find one then I'll see what is the next best thing I can find :)
<Kesava> I found this adapter that is designed for a hard drive. So I could power it without using the enclosure, which is bulky and then power the cubieboard using it's standard usb power. But would I still have to tie the grounds together? And if so, how is that done?
<GargantuaSauce> you could probably power the cubieboard with that in addition to the harddrive
<GargantuaSauce> the 2A i cited from the board without thinking, it needs much less than that if it's not powering a 2.5" hd
<GargantuaSauce> so get that and one of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/110780126711 and cut up a power cable to run red/black to the cubieboad
<Kesava> It looks like it has a 4 pin molex connector. So I'd need a molex to sata connector and then something else to be able to power the cubieboard? Do you think that finding an old pc power supply would be a far better option? Sounds like it to me :)
<GargantuaSauce> oh yeah sata power hurrr
<GargantuaSauce> well swap that cable for a sata power adapter
<GargantuaSauce> or yeah use an atx supply
<Kesava> Would a 450 watt atx power supply be efficient when running this?
<GargantuaSauce> not particularly, but it won't be too terrible
<GargantuaSauce> ideally you'd rip one out of a small form factor pc or something so it'd be lower power and less bulky but i'm sure that'll do just fine
<Kesava> That's like $20. A bit expensive and doesn't look like it has sata power or anything.
<GargantuaSauce> well no matter what you use, you're going to have to cut up and solder some cables
<Kesava> Yeah I'm fine with that. Just need it to be simple enough that I don't mess it up :)
<GargantuaSauce> that won't do actually, only does .5A at 12v
<GargantuaSauce> i'd say use the harddrive adapter and http://www.ebay.com/itm/130495594072
<GargantuaSauce> also you should be using the US ebay since most sellers on there for this stuff are in china and ship worldwide anyway
<Kesava> If I use something like that, do I need to tie the grounds together?
<GargantuaSauce> no, since it's a single power supply both voltage rails are referenced to the same ground in the first place
<GargantuaSauce> so it's just a question of lopping off the yellow wire right after the first sata connector, and running red and one black to the cubieboard's +5/ground
<Kesava> Why lop off the yellow?
<GargantuaSauce> because that's 12v and you only need it for the harddrive
<Kesava> Okay. So I wouldn't need to remove it?
<GargantuaSauce> it just needs to not dangle and short to ground
<Kesava> Ah right. So ideally I'd lop off the yellow and one of the blacks then right? After the first sata connector.
<GargantuaSauce> yes
<Kesava> Okay. So yellow 12v red 5v. Now I'm understanding this better.
<GargantuaSauce> oh yeah i probably should have made that clear
<Kesava> I can probably get a molex to sata connector locally.
<GargantuaSauce> it will probably cost more than a dollar

ricardocrudo has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Kesava> Yeah that doesn't matter. Want it sooner rather than later. Will even pay $25 for DHL/Fedex for the Cubieboard.
<Kesava> I just checked out the F10 Wireless keyboard/mouse on youtube, the one that is suggested on the cubieboard shoppify store. It looks fantastic. I'm definitely getting that as well!
<Kesava> Does the cubieboard have places to solder external power supplies or do I have to remove the jack connector part?
rz2k has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<GargantuaSauce> the jack is through-hole so you could probably solder it right to its leads on the bottom
<GargantuaSauce> or perhaps the 5v sata power connector (not sure on that one)
<Kesava> The Cubieboard only needs .5amp when it's not running a data drive, right? However I'm thinking that in order to use at it's full potential in the future, maybe I need to power it properly. I may just be better off and less confused if I just get a 12v 2A usb adapter for it and use my hard drive enclosure and connect the hard drive with USB. That way the hard drive has a case and is protected, I can move it around and it's powered
<Kesava> If the cubieboard is getting it's proper amperage then I can add a 2.5" sata drive easily, as I have a few lying around. So it's probably going to be cheaper and easier for me to do that.
<Kesava> I would find it exciting to work out and make this other system happen, but it's probably not practical when I already have a hard drive enclosure.

<Kesava> Alright I'm gonna order the Cubieboard, F10 wireless keyboard/mouse, black&white case right now!
<Kesava> Thanks for your help GuargantuaSauce. It definitely helped me have a much better understanding of my options. I think once I have it here, I'll consider improving the setup and powering them both with a single supply.
<GargantuaSauce> sounds like a plan
<GargantuaSauce> thanks for enabling my procrastination ;)
<Kesava> If only my hard drive enclosure's power supply cable wasn't almost about to break. I'm gonna have to rewire it. Other than that, I should be good to go.
matt680209 has joined #cubieboard
<Kesava> Does that look fine for powering the cubieboard? Need something that fits an indian socket.
<Kesava> 5v 2A is exactly what it needs right?
<GargantuaSauce> those cheap little usb chargers can be pretty sketchy
<GargantuaSauce> it'll probably work but i wouldnt guarantee it won't destroy it at some point
<Kesava> Okay. I'll see if I can buy a better quality one somewhere.
<Kesava> I'm trying to order from http://cubieboard.myshopify.com but when I go to checkout, I can calculate the shipping cost but it doesn't seem to add it to the price that I'm paying.
<Kesava> Even when it says below the main price (+$25 estimated shipping) it doesn't add that to the total I pay through Paypal.
<Kesava> I can order from Miniand but then I won't be able to get the wireless keyboard/mouse. Has anyone else had issues with the shipping payment on cubieboard.myshopify.com?

<Kesava> I want to connect a 3.5" 2TB hard drive by Sata to the cubieboard I'm about to order. I'm trying to work out the best power configuration in order to power both easily. Either I can get a 12v 2a + 5v 2a AC adapter which should work, but wouldn't technically support the cubieboard and the hard drive, if the cubieboard is using it's full 2 amp. Or I can get a 400 watt computer psu to power both. It's bulker and around the same price
