awygle: shift the problematic group by a very small amount elsewhere
<whitequark>
e.g. if you're making a difference that sections out exactly 1/4 of a circle, make it not exact
<whitequark>
that's all I can suggest
<awygle>
mm. i tried doing something like that, but it's not a difference this time, so it's more challenging. i might have to start all over so that it _can_ be a difference...
<awygle>
desperately trying to get through this project without learning anything substantive about NURBS :p
<awygle>
would exporting it as a STEP and re-importing it help? that would blow away all the constraints and whatnot, right? maybe let the solver work better with one solid lump?

awygle: there's no STEP import
<awygle>
o :(
<whitequark>
if you look at how STEP works, you'll understand why
<awygle>
thought i'd read somewhere there was
<awygle>
which surprised me because i've never seen STEP import for modification anywhere else :p
<whitequark>
it starts by defining a system of units, you know, like wannabe BIPM
<whitequark>
it's an incredibly generic format that almost but not quite starts by defining a schema for all the data that follow
<whitequark>
the reality is more complex but it's something along those lines
<whitequark>
as such no two programs actually understand the same subsets of STEP
<whitequark>
someone tried to add color support to STEP export and faile
<awygle>
sigh. ah well. "start taller and cut down instead of extruding out" will probably work, just have to fix all the constraints between A and B
<awygle>
who knew 3d modeling could be complicated

3ds max wasn't too bad to get started in when I had a license (_and_ struggled for a weekend to learn the basic 3d operations). Solvespace was fun to learn, but I haven't had anything to use it for.
<cr1901_modern>
Blender's UI is... bad, I hear.
<whitequark>
just use cracked 3dsmax
<whitequark>
that's what i did as a child
<whitequark>
it's for very different tasks though
<cr1901_modern>
haha, I think it's subscription-based now
<whitequark>
oh

B/c Autodesk
<cr1901_modern>
My use case for solvespace is 3d printing and modeling parts that I want to bring into the physical world; 3dsmax and Blender can be used for generic 3d games/demos/etc
<whitequark>
yeah
<swivel>
i thought the new blender UI was supposed to make it a lot easier for newcomers
