<dranz> Is it possible to use sandstorm without any domains, using only external IP?
<dranz> Im getting WARNING: This server seems to have its WILDCARD_HOST misconfigured
<sknebel> dranz: no, since sandstorm uses subdomains a lot
<dranz> Thanks, I'll try with xip then.

<dranz> I don't understand this.. Can XIP be used if you want it accessiable outside of your network?
<dranz> I'm trying to run sandstorm on a VM inside dedicated server. Can I use XIP or anything instead of a real domain?
<sknebel> dranz: XIP doesn't do any tunneling or so, but if your sandstorm server is reachable under a public IP it "should"(TM) work
<sknebel> (not tried it, but don't see a reason right now why not)
<sknebel> any reason you don't want to use sandcats.io though?
<sknebel> its integrated in sandstorm, provides https, ...
<dranz> its accessiable with xip but still getting wildcard domain misconfigured error.
<dranz> I'd prefer not to use it for privacy reasons, I suppose that is why most people look for selfhosted solutions.
<sknebel> what did you set as wildcard host?
<sknebel> (dranz ^^^)
<dranz> I tried with both external and internal IP, with and without xip
<dranz> BASE_URL=http://65.145.293.164.xip.io:6080
<dranz> WILDCARD_HOST=*.65.145.293.164.xip.io:6080
<dranz> (ip's are not real)
<sknebel> I don't think the port should be in those values
<sknebel> but in the PORT= parameter
<sknebel> wait, wrong, it probably should
<sknebel> yes, I was confused
<sknebel> then I don't have another idea right now, sorry
<dranz> Thanks, I'll just move to something else

<Jurri> Hello. Anyway to make sandstorm work without domain name?
<TimMc> Jurri: Heh, someone else was just asking that! In short: You can't, but you can get a free domain name.
<TimMc> There's sandcats, and there's also xip.io.
<Jurri> Thats really unfortunate... And you only find out you need domain on last step when nothing works...
<TimMc> Is the sandcats option not acceptable?
<TimMc> It's what I use currently, although I'll be moving to my own domain once I buy a wildcard cert and settle on a name.
<Jurri> I don't wish to use domain, might aswell use google spreadshit if it has to be linked to some external service
<Jurri> Thanks TimMc
<TimMc> Jurri: You can use your own DNS if you are really set on that, but sandstorm definitely needs a domain name for its security model.
<Jurri> If I understand that correctly, I would have to edit DNS on all devices that would want to access it?
<TimMc> That's not what I was suggesting, no. If you registered a domain name and hosted the DNS for it yourself, that would certainly give you more control.
<TimMc> Either way, it certainly gives you more control over your data than Google stuff. :-)

<Jurri> It sucks because all these apps work without any domains etc on their own... Guess back to docker
<Jurri> I don't understand why this would need a subdomain, can't it be reverse proxied?
<sknebel> because it uses subdomains for security isolation, see https://docs.sandstorm.io/en/latest/administering/wildcard/#why-sandstorm-needs-wildcard-dns

<joshuafpt> I have been trying to install Sandstorm for days now and I keep getting errors, mainly when I run the install it says my server never starting listening :(
<joshuafpt> I have seen a few different fixes online but none seem to work, any ideas?

<TimMc> joshuafpt: Is it because something else is listening on that port?
<TimMc> That would be a reason for the server to fail to start listening.
