morning all!
<rapha>
is there something like hirb or wirble, but simpler, for printing an array into a file at fixed column widths? something like colputs([["mary", 10], ["had", 5], ["a", 3], ["lamb", 0]]) and that would become "mary had a lamb"?

<al2o3-cr>
AOL was my first isp.
<bhaak>
I remember, once I almost succeeded, but then I couldn't get the X11 config working. so I booted the knoppix livecd and copied the automatical created X11 config from there.
<adam12>
al2o3-cr: Yep. If I had to guess it would be mid-96.
<adam12>
bhaak: Nothing like messing with Xorg modelines at risk of frying your monitor.

can still hear that dialing tone ringing in his ears.
<adam12>
al2o3-cr: I used a local place here, but to get online reliably I needed to download Winsock and Netscape. To do that, I used a "free" provider that only offered lynx :) so dial into free provider, lynx to get winsock and netscape, hours later, maybe get online.
<adam12>
Tho around that time BBS were still fairly common and there were _some_ GUI BBS. I think Wildcat had a GUI client?
<al2o3-cr>
adam12: not sure, all bbs i used were terminal based.
<adam12>
al2o3-cr: They were for me too, mostly. But there was at least 1 so the jump from text to GUI wasn't completely strange.

oh, and the acorn.
<adam12>
al2o3-cr: Very cool.
<al2o3-cr>
adam12: thanks.
<adam12>
al2o3-cr: I've never seen a BBC Microcomputer or Acorn in person. Not very common here in North America AFAIK.
<al2o3-cr>
adam12: yeah, the were mainly distributed for UK schools.
<adam12>
al2o3-cr: You ever watch the Micro Men movie by BBC?
<al2o3-cr>
it rings a bell.
<adam12>
al2o3-cr: Quite enjoyable for some of the history in that part of the world. Documenting Sinclair and Acorn.

yeah, it's fascinating really how it all started.
