also, the rubocop thing, I didn't realize you could have a rescue without a begin at the top level of the method (which is why it was complaining)

nchambers: it's not wrong. it's just that .. is far more prevalent and people tend to miss the extra ., even experienced ones as baweaver just proved :)

I can't remember how I picked up ..., but I just use it now out of habit

... means "excluding the end", so for this use-case, 1..-2 is equivalent to 1...-1
