''I know they are still some freedom issues with the bootloader and modem processor.'' a buyer review
<chomwitt>
i think neo900 projects needs a more-wiki oriented site . main neo900 seems little stiff

yes, absolutely

<chomwitt>
pyra-phone... that a news..
<chomwitt>
i've reading the email list
<DocScrutinizer05>
that honestly sucks big time
<chomwitt>
why u say so ?
<DocScrutinizer05>
well, first pyra delayed neo900 for key team member allocating time to pyra exclusively, then pyra "sabotaged" neo900 by key team member explaining they can't do layout anymore because "burnout from pyra" or somesuch. And now pyra-phone which is basically exactly what neo900 successor STEP2 always been meant to be
<DocScrutinizer05>
I can't blame them but I don't feel happy about all that either. maybe you understand why
<chomwitt>
i understand. but also as a person from greece who see things from a distance i wonder why is difficult to avoid that fragmentation that creates friction and possibly loss of energy?
<DocScrutinizer05>
I have no answer to that
<DocScrutinizer05>
probably because focus in neo900 always been on phone as top priority, and resulting from that, compatibility with / support for maemo been a major project goal, while pyra always been a generic gaming device
<DocScrutinizer05>
one thing that clearly shows the difference: pyra and pandora never worried about standby time since there's no plausible usecase where those devices need to be up and running while pretending to be "off" like any arbitrary phone does when screen is locked. The openmoko-GTA0x/pandora/pyra appraoch to this was suspend-to-ram which in the end is a nogo for a phone
infobot has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<DocScrutinizer05>
and even in suspend2ram the GTA04 drew too much current
<DocScrutinizer05>
no idea about pandora, probably nobody ever really tested it

<chomwitt>
the 'standby time' issue you'r mentioning is a hardware or software issue ?
<DocScrutinizer51>
hw
<DocScrutinizer51>
though most *think* it was just a matter of sw
<DocScrutinizer51>
actually the 'wrong' software can spoil standby time just like flawed hardware
<DocScrutinizer51>
many sw devels have weird or no ideas how a srandby-compliant sw works, and resulting from that they have no clue at all how standby-compliant hw works
<chomwitt>
i see. thats an argument in favor of more collaboration. i mean reinventing the wheel with pain .
<DocScrutinizer05>
indeed
<DocScrutinizer05>
but... for now I have not heard anything about which software a pyraphone would want to use
<DocScrutinizer05>
while neo900 goals been always clear about that: maemo
<DocScrutinizer05>
maemo is proven to work for standby time
<DocScrutinizer05>
the only other OS I know about that could get used is android
<DocScrutinizer05>
incl all spinoffs
<DocScrutinizer05>
both seem to be no considered option for pandora/pyra so far
<DocScrutinizer05>
of course you can develop your own phone-os based on tweaks to whatever linux (or generally FOSS) distro you like, you 'just' need to audit and fix *all* programs that may have running processes while device in standby
<DocScrutinizer05>
or you do something silly like stopping processes while in standby, or even going into suspend2ram which is basically not that much different the the former
<DocScrutinizer05>
and even then you did nothing yet about realtime response to events like inbound calls. Which resulted in Openmoko (the OS of GTA02) missing calls since resume from suspend2ram took 12 seconds
<DocScrutinizer05>
building a system working as a phone isn't as simple as it may look at first glance
<DocScrutinizer05>
and that's not referring to "uh! which GUI shall we use? shall the buttons be green or red? does it swipe?"
<DocScrutinizer05>
or "do we use apt-get or offer an appshop?"

<DocScrutinizer05>
meanwhile the linux kernel and core system are in acceptable shape regarding standby in battery-powered embedded, also thanks to feedback from android
<DocScrutinizer05>
but middleware and apps are far from that
<chomwitt>
so all meamo apps were 'fixed' to work in harmony with the kernel in the standby-time issue i guess

yes, that's what maemo QA in maemo-extras-testing is all about
<DocScrutinizer05>
and the stock apps as provided by Nokia of course already been "fixed" or rather developed for standby from beginning. like middleware and core system
<DocScrutinizer05>
and even a few kernel patches
<DocScrutinizer05>
most of the kernel stuff went upstream meanwhile

From what's been said, I think that it's just a way of taking advantage of the production they have to do for the Pyra.
<Joerg-Neo900>
sure
<paul_boddie>
And I think GTA04 has more or less run its course.
<paul_boddie>
Nikolaus was trying to fix up boards that used the 1GB RAM package, I think, but it doesn't look like there will be another round of 512MB boards.

<Guest48553>
Joerg-Neo900, any forum threads regarding this?
<Joerg-Neo900>
twitter been a backend to the microblog, and it never worked reliably thanks to constantly changing API and whatnot
<Guest48553>
we are working on privacy cases and looking for open source hardware. our project right now is https://boqpod.ch. But unfortunately based on Android. even AOSP but is not so good. For CPU like for Neo900 we can build up special version of freeBSD and it will be much better solution. In that case for tcp/ip link can be used even LTE modem
<Guest48553>
if somebody interesting to cooperate I can leave my e-mail address, just write me to private
