<montjoie> oh no EMCE
<clementp[m]> gediz539: in the wiki h616 also support lpddr4 compare to h6. so support will be a bit more complicated as we need libdram or designware document.
Mangy_Dog has joined #linux-sunxi
<jernej> from what I can see, h616 dram controller is probably similar to that in imx8m, but unfortunately, they are hiding PHY related code in coprocessor binary firmware

<clementp[m]> this may match the H616 DRAM controller
<yoq> yep, i got annoyed with the watermarks and created a tool to get rid of them: https://github.com/dbeinder/SunxiPdfCleaner/releases
<yoq> it's not general purpose and will only work for allwinner stuff as long as they don't change their watermarking workflow
<clementp[m]> yoq: thanks ! That's cool this cool be fork in linux-sunxi organisation ? Ho nooo it's C#...
<yoq> Sure, but it is really hacky, this was minimal-effort mod of an existing project, with an end-of-life PDF library and windows forms UI. because the PDF format is like a series of painting-instructions, there is no real general way of de-watermarking, it always needs to be tailored to the specific watermarking tool. so even less motivation for nice
<yoq> coding

<willmore> jernej, as you saying that Allwinner hides the DRAM config code in a binary blob or NXT does?
<jernej> well, both do, just in different way
<jernej> you are probably familiar with AW libdram, which is just ordinary object file and can be linked into final binary
<jernej> nxp method is to run dram phy config code on coprocessor
<jernej> that's what librem 5 will use
<Ashleee> jernej, not anytime soon, the boards are in 24/7 mode for the unforseeable future as I am moving into a house, hoping hexdump has better chance :)
<jernej> ok, no problem
<willmore> jernej, Okay, I didn't know about how NXP did it. I keep hearing people say "NXP is completely open and in mainline" and then I hear stuff like this.
<lurchi_> The FreeScale (now NXP) PowerPCs had really good register documentation, and DRAM init was also coverered in several ANs.
<willmore> jernej, oh, they loopholed it. :(
<juri_> ugly.
<mru> stupid
<insep_> cheating
<mru> it's stupid because it accomplishes nothing
<mru> that firmware blob is needed, no way around it
<mru> dancing around and pretending you didn't see it is lots of effort for no benefit
<mru> the idea that u-boot would be somehow "tainted" by handling the blob as data is preposterous
<mru> if there's something nefarious in there, getting it where needs to be through a more convoluted route isn't going to protect you
hexdump0815 has joined #linux-sunxi
<jernej> agreed but it seems that fsf ryf certification doesn't agree with us
<hexdump0815> that imx8 ddr training sounds a bit like it is done on amlogic socs as well i think
<juri_> jernej: holes you can drive a truck through.
<hexdump0815> jernej: i'll test you patch during the next days
<hexdump0815> jernej: i guess its ment against plain u-boot mainline?
<willmore> I thought the threshold they had set was wether the binary blob was freely distributable. The reasoning being that a completely hardware device shouldn't get a bonus as being more 'open' than one using a small built-in processor that needs a firmware. As long as the firmware was as freely distributable as the hardware.
<hexdump0815> jernej: btw. do i read it right that its time to get a h616 bot for the next round of u-boot dram testing? :)
<jernej> hexdump0815: yes, I used latest master for template, but really that driver didn't change for some time now, so you can apply it on older U-Boot versions too
<hexdump0815> typo: bot = box above
<jernej> well, depends
<jernej> there is no SDK nor SBCs out, so it will be harder to develop something
<jernej> but if DRAM driver is written, I believe rest will be more or less easy, mostly reusing existing drivers
<jernej> I currently don't have any plan to really do write DRAM driver, I was just curious if it is like H6 one or not
<jernej> (in the past, several SoCs have very similar DRAM controllers - H3, H5, R40, A64)

<hexdump0815> Ashleee: good for the upcoming winter to heat the room :)
<Ashleee> if I want to heat the room I have two i5-2500k on the shelf :)
<Ashleee> actually I've been thinking how to gather heat from computers and heat the home/water with it
<Ashleee> basically the water around CPU is maybe 40 - 45C at most but it needs to heat the target boiler upto 80C
<hexdump0815> Ashleee: although h6 tv boxes are not that bad in that area neiither
<Ashleee> one idea was to use it as a preheater
<Ashleee> with some form of heat pump
<Ashleee> but heat pump needs electricity as well :D
