does anyone know if pi based boards running a linux distro can get amazon prime video and netflix apps that run the streams at full allowed res? So 4k if you have a 4k sub or HD if you have a HD sub? I heard that in some android devices if there isnt a certain certificate they will stream at a reduced res. Is that the same If i want to build a media centre?
<fALSO>
mangy_dog, doubtfull
<Mangy_Dog>
so you think if i run a media centre ill get reduced res?

<KotCzarny>
if you have H2/H3 board, you can try out h3droid
<KotCzarny>
it's simple to install and allows dual booting to other os
<Mangy_Dog>
ill considder the h3 board though i might end up using a regular ras pi model a+
<Mangy_Dog>
pi3 that is
<Mangy_Dog>
tbh need to have a good think what board im going to use
<Mangy_Dog>
my ras pi zero is almost certainly getting octa print or something like that put on it
<Mangy_Dog>
as its the lowest powered board and theres not a whole bunch of things I can do with it
<Mangy_Dog>
the orange zero might be a candidate, but currently the h3 model is going to be used for the retro handheld, but will be swapped later with the h5 model when the gpu drivers are sorted
<Mangy_Dog>
so the one left over might end up being used
<Mangy_Dog>
or i use the banana pi zero or the rasberry i ave
<Mangy_Dog>
but i want it to have media storage too maybe a full sized HD
<Mangy_Dog>
with a single USB 2 port its not going to be speedy
<Mangy_Dog>
or i could just buy another sbc with sata or soemthing :D
<Mangy_Dog>
a full sized sbc isnt out the question tbh
<Mangy_Dog>
im going to put this into a really nice old dvd chassie
<fALSO>
mangy_dog, i doubt that they have enough bandwidth on the network card
<fALSO>
to even be able to stream 4k
<Mangy_Dog>
4k was just an example
<fALSO>
1080 probably works
<Mangy_Dog>
though tbh... to be able to play 4k files would be nice
<Mangy_Dog>
as i might get a 4k tv later in the year
<fALSO>
i Bought an LG
<fALSO>
with webOS
<Mangy_Dog>
nice
<fALSO>
its pretty cool, if you connect a usb HDD to it
<Mangy_Dog>
though when i saw lgs at the shopw one thing really bothered me
<fALSO>
it knows how to play all kinds of formats
<Mangy_Dog>
the strange boxed edge look inside the screen at the edges
<fALSO>
mkv with different codecs etc
<Mangy_Dog>
can i tplay 4k videos nativly?
<fALSO>
i've been able to play everything i put on it
scelestic has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<fALSO>
yes
<fALSO>
and 4K with HDR and everything
<Mangy_Dog>
hmm
<Mangy_Dog>
what model you get?
<fALSO>
hum
<Mangy_Dog>
what model did you get
<fALSO>
45 inches something
<Mangy_Dog>
ah
<fALSO>
i not currently at home
<Mangy_Dog>
heh k
<fALSO>
cant tell you the model
<Mangy_Dog>
though im looking at 60
<Mangy_Dog>
want a nice home cinema thing going
<fALSO>
if they have webOS
<fALSO>
youll be fine
<fALSO>
from what i've seen samsungs arent that OK with random video files
<fALSO>
the sonys probably also play everything because it is android
<Mangy_Dog>
nods
<Mangy_Dog>
but i found that sony android has some pretty poor processor power
<Mangy_Dog>
i think even last years models were mostly single core
<Mangy_Dog>
maybe a coupld of dual core
<fALSO>
probably, but the docoding isnt made by the cpu
<Mangy_Dog>
1ish ghz

did HD video decoding in software on a 600 MHz cortex-a8 10 years ago
<Mangy_Dog>
hopefully :p
<mru>
much to the surprise of ARM
<Mangy_Dog>
and damn scary looking at some reviews at an lg... seems like so many where broken or had serious QA issues
<fALSO>
well it has 2 years warranty
<fALSO>
at least in portugal
<Mangy_Dog>
nodnods
<Mangy_Dog>
oh im sure if i get a defective one ill get it replaced
<Mangy_Dog>
though some people report light bleed increasing in a short few months
<Mangy_Dog>
i really need to go see some at the shops again
<fALSO>
well nothing is perfect
<fALSO>
mine was like 450€
<fALSO>
and recently i saw it on discount for 390€
<fALSO>
feelz bad

mru: what codec?
<mru>
carefully chosen h264
<mru>
and no audio
<KotCzarny>
was it with displaying it too or just decoding?
<mru>
display
<KotCzarny>
nice
<KotCzarny>
did you publish the code somewhere or completely PoC-private ?
<willmore>
Mangy_Dog, if you're looking for 4K decode on an SBC, you're going to want to look at an ODROID C2 or maybe one of the RockChip boards. There's not going to be an allwinner board that can do what you want.
