<xalius> if I have an entry in the devicetree, with compatible = "allwinner,pmu0"; and I dont have a corresponding driver in the linux kernel that corresponds to that, can I assume that the information from that entry is not used at all?

<apritzel> xalius: yes
<xalius> mmh
<apritzel> you can have a DT full of unknown nodes
<xalius> I cant find anything for compatible = "allwinner,pmu0"; only for the compatible = "allwinner,pmu0_regu";
<xalius> that probably means the battery definitions from the dts dont go anywhere
<apritzel> Allwinner tends to invent bindings that have nothing to do with the upstream kernel
<xalius> they have batteries hardcoded in the PMIC driver
<orly_owl> amlogic s905 ftw
<xalius> which is also what I see when looking at sysfs
<MoeIcenowy> terrible batteries hardcoded
<xalius> I wanted to understand how the parameters in the devicetree would get passed down the layers to the PMIC
<xalius> but it seems they dont :)

<tuxillo> hi
<tuxillo> I have been pointed to this channel to ask about u-boot'ing a Pine64
<tuxillo> but in Aarch64 mode
<jelle> nice
<longsleep> tuxillo: get in touch with apritzel when you want to help testing mainline u-boot with new atf and mainline kernel
<tuxillo> he pointed me to this channel
<tuxillo> but he's gone, probably different timezone than CEST
<vagrantc> i managed to get it to work yesterday
<tuxillo> oh wow, nice
<tuxillo> because I got my pine64 only today and I was thinking in spending some time with it
<tuxillo> (probably mid july tho but still)
<vagrantc> the newer image doesn't work
<vagrantc> tuxillo: if all goes well, it'll be even easier by then
<tuxillo> my original aim is to do some baremetal apps for learning
<tuxillo> hehe ok
<longsleep> tuxillo: there is also some preliminary docs at https://gist.github.com/apritzel/68941c29c77955f1daa45b50d36c5425
<tuxillo> thanks guys for all the info :-)
<tuxillo> ah, I see. the boot0 is closed source, ok
<vagrantc> i guess the plan is to replace boot0.img with u-boot SPL code
<longsleep> tuxillo: please be aware that with mainline u-boot you need boot mainline kernel and there is no HDMI/LCD support
<vagrantc> yay serial console!
<longsleep> yes - but we all like terminals best anyways :P
<vagrantc> easier to cut-and-paste from a serial console
<tuxillo> as I said, I want to do some basic baremetal applications so I'll be using UART only
<tuxillo> by now
<tuxillo> and for that u-boot is very convienient because it can retrieve the kernel from tftp
<tuxillo> so I don't need to be constantly pulling / putting the SD card
<tuxillo> not sure if there are more efficient ways of doing so
<longsleep> tuxillo: there is no network support in u-boot yet
<longsleep> (on pine64)
<tuxillo> oh moh :-(
<ssvb> tuxillo: you may also try https://linux-sunxi.org/FEL/USBBoot
<longsleep> tuxillo: yeah ^^^
<ssvb> tuxillo: there is even a precompiled binary here, which you can write to an SD card or run via sunxi-fel tool - https://github.com/linux-sunxi/sunxi-tools/blob/master/bin/uart0-helloworld-sdboot.sunxi
<ssvb> tuxillo: there is just one problem with using the FEL mode specifically on Pine64, you need a non-standard USB cable for it - https://linux-sunxi.org/Pine64#FEL_mode
<ssvb> tuxillo: feel free to ask questions if you need some help
<ssvb> tuxillo: btw, A64 starts in the 32-bit mode, but you can switch to the 64-bit mode too

<tuxillo> well, okay yeah. I'll play with that and come back with questions :-)

<tuxillo> ssvb: I wish there was a way to transfer the kernel via the gpio pinouts
<KotCzarny> like, spi mode?
<ssvb> tuxillo: yeah, but at least USB OTG works via FEL
<tuxillo> KotCzarny: what is that red thing?
<KotCzarny> ask the master (ssvb)
<tuxillo> ah, it's another SoC
<KotCzarny> but in short, spi emulation with another sbc
<ssvb> KotCzarny: that was only an experiment for booting the SPL, not the kernel :)
<KotCzarny> :)
reinforce has joined #linux-sunxi
<KotCzarny> well, what stops you from adding more features? ;)
<ssvb> tuxillo: nothing is impossible, you can implement loading the kernel via gpio too
<ssvb> tuxillo: it's just that the other people prefer somewhat more traditional methods ;-)
<ssvb> tuxillo: what kind of bare metal applications are you interested in? loading the kernel sounds like something a bit different
<tuxillo> ssvb: my greater plans are to port an OS to armv8 but that's probably not going to ever happen
<tuxillo> ssvb: so I'd like to create a mini-kernel that boots, initalizes stuff, etc
<tuxillo> it's basically a learning exercise
<ssvb> this all is not difficult at all if you get a USB cable for FEL mode
<tuxillo> I will have to, yeah
<ssvb> the only tricky thing is the DRAM initialization, which currently needs a binary-only library from Allwinner
<tuxillo> because the support for the nic in pine64 may take longer :P
<tuxillo> with u-boot it just jumps into the address you tell it
<ssvb> isn't the Ethernet already working to some extent?
<tuxillo> and finds the baremetal kernel there
<tuxillo> i have done that for armv7
<tuxillo> i don't know, I haven't checked

<willmore> Once I find my SOIC carrier boards, I'll solder up some rigs and try testing it.

<TheLinuxBug> ssvb: do you need someone with A10/A20 for something? I have 2 A10's sitting here and my BPi M1
<ssvb> TheLinuxBug: well, I have some A10/A20 myself, but they don't have PC0,PC1,PC2,PC23 pins available on the expansion headers
<willmore> ssvb, roger that
<ssvb> TheLinuxBug: also one needs an SPI flash chip or module, something like http://www.ebay.com/itm/W25Q-Windbond-Serial-Flash-Memory-Module-SPI-W25Q128B-BIOS-25Q64BVSIG-EEPROM-/181873964697

<apritzel> I get it you want to play with custom code, as ssvb said USB FEL it quite a good fit for that
<apritzel> you can load U-Boot's SPL (which links with the proprietary libdram library atm), this initialises the DRAM for you, then load your code somewhere and jump to it via the "reset64" command from the FEL tool
