I'm looking for someone who is using firefly rk3399
<vagrantc>
kloczek: any more specific questions?
<kloczek>
I finished upgrade Linux to latest version and I cannot find kernel, modules and cannot stop u-boot to for example change u-boot settings or boot over PXE to try to install other than Ubuntu based distro
<kloczek>
how can I access to raw content of the eMMC internal storage
<vagrantc>
rkdeveloptool or rkflashtool
cnxsoft has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<kloczek>
"fdisk -l /dev/mmcblk1" does not show any partitions/slices or whatever
<kloczek>
vagrantc: so how can I stop u-boot?
<vagrantc>
depends on the u-boot build ... should usually say "press key/spacebar/s to interrupt boot"
<kloczek>
I still have vanilla u-boot and there is no even single line about press something. u-boot starts just Linux and that it
<kloczek>
vagrantc: /proc/cmdline suggest that it is some kind of trusted boot. /boot is empty, no /lib/modules and lsmod shows empty list
<vagrantc>
what do you mean by vanilla u-boot?
<kloczek>
vagrantc: as it was on ordered firefly
* vagrantc
doesn't remember what it shipped with or how it was configured
<vagrantc>
i pretty much proceeded to wipe the eMMC and start working on getting u-boot and debian onto the thing :)
<vagrantc>
with a few fun adventures with maskrom mode and shorting the eMMC along the way... recently repeated again
* vagrantc
needs to get a friend to solder a switch to short the eMMC
<vagrantc>
or never try to reinstall the bootloader in eMMC
<vagrantc>
kloczek: can you pastebin a copy of your boot log somewhere?
<kloczek>
vagrantc: 2. Use micro USB Type-C cable to connect host and device together.

hello, can anyone tell me if the rk3399 has 2d acceleration in the provided ubuntu distro and if so is vlc able to utilize it?
<phh>
"2d acceleration" is kind of fuzzy
<phh>
there is hw decode
<ed5480>
for video?
<phh>
yes
<ed5480>
can it be used by VLC for videos?
<phh>
don't know
<phh>
I'd say no
<ed5480>
im trying to understand what the missing components are. for example everything works fine in android but in linux there are graphics limitations. why is that? based on what ive read it stems from the DRI/DRM in linux and Android has some different APIs to allow programs to access hardware, is that right?
<phh>
well, there is no proper hw decoding API in Linux
<phh>
rockchip implemented some of them, but not all
<phh>
perhaps it's possible to use ffmpeg's hardware codec in vlc
<beeble>
i think vlc is missing mpp support. there are implementations in gstreamer and ffmpeg
<phh>
LongChair: ^^^?
<beeble>
but not an expert on that topic
<ed5480>
so high level it sounds like Android has proper APIs for hardware interaction while Linux distros rely on SoC manufacturers to build the APIs for their VPUs, am I getting that right?
<ed5480>
and mpp is rockhips api library for hw interaction, correct?
<phh>
something like that
<beeble>
yes, mpp is the goto library for hw encode/decode
<beeble>
for gstreamer see the rockchip github repo
<wzyy2>
Also, to make video playback smooth, graphics acceleration(gpu,drm) is also need.
<wzyy2>
It's horrible to use CPU Rendering in those uncached-dma-buffer.

<ed5480>
from what i read i thought HD video only needed 2d or video acceleration, i didnt think it also needed graphics accel. my understanding is that graphics accel is for 3d hw decode
<phh>
graphics acceleration here just means "convert from 1920x1080 YUV to <resolution of your screen> RGB"
<phh>
I think you can do it with 4 different ways in rockchip chip, you just have to use one...
<ed5480>
the drivers for graphics accel all work though from what i understand, its just the video accel/VPU that is causing some problems out of the box right?
<phh>
well, for instance, if you use the 3d GPU to do that, you need your software to be able to use it. I'm not sure vlc knows EGL
<ed5480>
looking at VLCs docs it looks like it can be compiled with opengl support through EGL
<phh>
erm well, on rockchip you'll need opengles + egl
<ed5480>
thanks for the links, ill do some more reading and poking around. thanks for all the answers, still just trying to wrap my head around the graphics system in general

phh: no clue about Vlc / MPP
<phh>
Well i was thinking of vlc -> ffmpeg -> mpp
<LongChair>
Maybe if vlc can make use of the decoder I made which I doubt as I basically introduced the first zerocopy frame format in ffmpeg :)

Hi, I'm trying to boot my RK3188 device from SD card; since I was not able to use U-Boot, I tried with Barebox; what happens is that Barebox stops instead of loading the kernel.
