on a wild hair, i decided to try debian stretch's linux 4.9.x on the veyron-speedy, and it taunted me by working the first time

and then proceeding to still fail to detect eMMC properly

i have it working consistantly with 4.8.x with a simple patch to the device-tree, but that patch didn't work on 4.9.x or 4.10.x

i've got a usb cable hacked up for the rockusb serial support thing somewhere... but i'm trying to use standard debian kernels which have the necessary USB support compiled as modules
