hi mathias__, i got a kernel for rk3229 (dolamee-d5 and mxq-4k) compiled from the release3.10 branch and got it booting fine from sd-card based on an adaption of linuxium's scripts for creating bootable sd-cards some months ago - everything looked very good, but the kernel freezes exactly 30 seconds after it has started booting with either /bin/sh as init or with a proper systemd init
<dolamee-d5>
otherwise it looked really good - if i was fast, i was even able to login to the systemd started system via ssh :)
<dolamee-d5>
i tried to find out, why it freezes, but did not find any direction yet - i asked around here on irc as well, but looks like nobody here is really interested in rk3229, although there are tons of those boxes around for cheap

i think i even tried to compile a mainline kernel for the rk3229 and compile fine, but lacks support for all the devices one really needs for anything serious - like usb, eth, mmc etc. ...
<dolamee-d5>
it would be cool, if you could give the 3.10 kernel a try as well to see, if you run into the freeze problems as well - for instance i so far did not try to flash such a kernel to nand/emmc
<dolamee-d5>
just reread: a little addition - i mean the release-3.10 branch from rockchip-linux/kernel
<dolamee-d5>
just search further into this direction from this author and you should find more such scritps for creating bootable ubuntu images etc.
<dolamee-d5>
one important note regarding the rk3229: it looks like most of those boxes have the serial console running at 1500000 instead of the usual 115200
