<herepuspsupsuspu> so I'm new to ipfs and playing around with pubsub on go-ipfs, docs @ https://ipfs.io/blog/25-pubsub/ I've figured out how to peer two nodes togeather and exchange messages, I'm curious about the architecture and have a couple of questions: 1. How can I get two clients to automatically peer to each other without the "ipfs swarm connect" command? is
<herepuspsupsuspu> their a public server that I can connect to, too relay messages/announce hosts across or some way to announce via dht? at the moment I have to manually peer to a node to communicate between two machines. I can't seem to pair with a public node. 2. is ipfs just p2p in the sense of messages can only be communicated between two connected nodes, or
<herepuspsupsuspu> could you say send a message from host 1 to host2 which would then relay it to host3 without host1 knowing about host3? Any info would be uber appreciated as I'm enjoying playing around with ipfs and want to do something cool with it
xcm has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

<eleitl[m]> You can make IPFS nodes peer manually via the config file, or via discovery on LAN, or rely on DHT to find them (with >300 k nodes and some 1-2 k direct peers not very likely).

<herepuspsupsuspu> Thanks eleiti[m], if I setup and peer with say one public server, and have a second then connect to it. If i setup a third server and peer it with the second will the second server rebroadcast messages to server3? like can I recieve pubsub messages broadcast from a connected peer > Server 1 > to Server 2 which is the only host peered with Server
<herepuspsupsuspu> 3, will the message get propagated to server3?
<eleitl[m]> Sorry, I have no clue about pubsub and the state of pubsub message routing. I'm only using IPFS for distributed storage.
<herepuspsupsuspu> Thanks anyways! do you know if ipfs routes accross nodes when used for general storage purposes?
<herepuspsupsuspu> just trying to figure out the architecture
joocain2 has joined #ipfs
<swedneck[m]2> would there be any benefit to running an ipfs node on a router?
<eleitl[m]> When asking for content you're getting the nodes which have the information blocks you need, and fetch them from there.
<eleitl[m]> I would not want to run IPFS on a router/firewall for security reasons. Unless virtualized. Even then, it would probably make more sense to have a dedicated embedded running it, something like a Raspberry Pi 4 4 GB.
<herepuspsupsuspu> I wonder when I do "ipfs pubsub sub foo" how does it know what nodes to connect too? does it only connect to nodes that have subscribed to the channel
<herepuspsupsuspu> that it knows about
<tg> ey, any ipfs/libp2p related meetups around FOSDEM this weekend?
<eleitl[m]> You need some 2-4 GB RAM for IPFS, so it needs to be more than your garden-variety consumer router.
<swedneck[m]2> <eleitl[m] "You need some 2-4 GB RAM for IPF"> i know, i'm thinking more theoretically
bengates has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<eleitl[m]> I'm running Opnsense on a 4 GB RAM thin client, so in theory I could put IPFS on it.
<eleitl[m]> You also need a decent sized amount of storage for it, preferably solid state.
<swedneck[m]2> i wasn't asking about what resources you need to run ipfs :P
<swedneck[m]2> i was asking if there are any theoretical benefits to running a node on a router
<eleitl[m]> A Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 GB RAM and an external USB 3.0 drive looks like the ticket for a LAN IPFS node.
<eleitl[m]> The practical disadvantage is that routers are specialized devices, optimized for security and pushing lots of packets. By adding IPFS without virtualization for isolation you're increasing the attack surface.
<eleitl[m]> Instead of using a low-power specialized device (like an EdgeRouter ER-X or ER-6) you're going to need a more general computer which can't deal with pushing packets very well.
<eleitl[m]> And if you go into embedded space you need something better than go-ipfs.
<swedneck[m]2> again, not asking about resources
<swedneck[m]2> nor about disadvantages
<eleitl[m]> Then your question is not applicable to practice.
<odisseus[m]> One advantage is that your node isn't hidden behind NAT (or at least has one NAT fewer)
<eleitl[m]> True, but you'd rather use IPv6 with real routable addresses anyway.
<eleitl[m]> Some 80-90% of my traffic at home is now IPv6 due to IPFS.
<eleitl[m]> I also have port 4001 mapped on NAT to the IPFS LAN node. But latest IPFS with QUIC seems to really like IPv6.
<eleitl[m]> swedneck: if your router is a virtualized appliance on a fat x86 machine of course you could run IPFS on it. If you're not concerned about the extra attack surface.

<swedneck[m]2> aurgh, again, not talking about disadvantages or resource usage
<swedneck[m]2> i was just asking if there are any advantages to running it on a router
<swedneck[m]2> like how with dns it's useful to run a caching dns server on the router because it improves resolution times for devices on your network
