Hello, I was reading about ipfs and was curious. How easy is it to share files using it?
<symb0l[m]>
Im working on creating a BitTorrent alternative using federated servers and http to create a filesharing ecosystem and trying to figure out whether or not ipfs already covers the use cases

<Geras>
a question IS there any chatsite made for ipfs?
<ylp>
see links in the topic
<ShokuninDiscord[>
I mean we have a discord, matrix, slack, telegram...
<Geras>
i dont mean that you got. i mean chatsites in general
<Geras>
because when i search for chatsites on that site,i dont find many
<swedneck>
what do you mean by "chatsites made for ipfs"?
<Geras>
like own ipfs chatsites
<swedneck>
it sounds like what you want is the ipfs forum?
<Geras>
uh
<Geras>
not forum
<Geras>
normally on clearnet (not ipfs) when you search for chatsites,you find alot
<swedneck>
"own ipfs chatsites" isn't more clear what you mean
<Geras>
u know what i mean
<swedneck>
do you mean a chat application that uses ipfs to transport messages?
<swedneck>
i don't, that's why i'm asking
<swedneck>
if i knew what you mean i'd just answer your question
<Geras>
you never used chatsites that isnt ipfs,have you?
<swedneck>
again, "chatsites that isn't ipfs" doesn't make sense to me
<ShokuninDiscord[>
me neither
<ShokuninDiscord[>
We're chatting
<ShokuninDiscord[>
Here.
<swedneck>
the best i can figure is that you mean an application that sends messages over ipfs
<Geras>
lol. if you dont know what chatsite is,then i dont want to explain. everyone know what a chatsite is
<swedneck>
which would be orbit.chat
<swedneck>
"chatsite" isn't the issue here, that's only mildly vague
<swedneck>
"on ipfs" is the issue, it can mean very many things
<Geras>
lol
<swedneck>
for example https://riot.permaweb.io is hosted on ipfs, but it connects to a matrix server over normal http to send and recieve messages
<Geras>
see now what i mean by chatsite. like that
<swedneck>
however that's not a chat site, it's a chat client
<Geras>
well. as long as it can be used on a browser,its called chatsite
<swedneck>
i suppose
<swedneck>
beware that other people may be equally as confused as me
<Geras>
the thing i mean. im talking about a own chatsite for ips. that is only for ipfs. as in no copies of other chatsites from non-ipfs.. just for ipfs only
ipfs-stackbot has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Geras>
*ipfs
<swedneck>
and i'm confused again
<Geras>
im not going to explain because someone is confused. everyone knows what i mean
<swedneck>
you want a chat application that is arbitrarily restricted to discussing ipfs?
<Geras>
let me rather explain this (hopefully I can)
<swedneck>
right.. you have fun with that
<Geras>
On tor network there are sites that are ONLY for tor. you know what i mean now?
<swedneck>
both of those use ipfs to send messages
<Geras>
The orbit.chat just keep loading. nothing there yet
<swedneck>
the difference from TOR is that ipfs can run in the browser and thus you don't need ipfs installed
<swedneck>
if you have a javascript blocker installed you need to whitelist libp2p.io

nice chat btw

<Geras>
ok. it says that u can create a channel on orbit.chat.. How u do that? i mean. usually when u want to create a channel,you need to join it first.. other than that idk
<swedneck>
afaik it works like IRC
<swedneck>
to create a channel you just type in a name and if it doesn't already exist it's created
<Geras>
oh i see. its created automatically
<swedneck>
yes, same for gossipr.io
<Geras>
and whoever joins a channel there that doesnt exist is the only one who can remove the channel (aka "close" it),right?
<swedneck>
i think channels behave like radio channels
<swedneck>
no one can close them, you can just listen for and send messages
manray has joined #ipfs
<Geras>
well. i did make a test channel there and i closed it by using "close" and its not on the list of channels there anymore
ylp has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<swedneck>
yeah that just means you aren't listening for messages there anymore
<swedneck>
like tuning a radio to a different frequency
ylp has joined #ipfs
<Geras>
oh i see
<Geras>
kinda confusing,but really nice
<swedneck>
gossipr.io might be less confusing
<Geras>
yeah :D . to bad you cant clear the chat on the other one

Who needs a "filesharing site for IPFS" when you can just `ipfs add`?

Maybe what you actually need is a server that would store and distribute your data when you're offline

So I did an init with badgerds and also running ipfs add -r --hash=blake2b-256 which is significantly faster than default. ETA 5 h vs 1 day and some 6 hours.

Geras: 2. not hidden, same as with bittorrent
<Geras>
how do i hide my ip for ipfs?
<voker57>
use any VPN
<eleitl[m]1>
ETA was bogus as expected, but at least I'm over 10% through.
<voker57>
tor hidden service will probably not work without patching ipfs...
AbramAdelmo has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Geras>
what? i cant make the ipfs hidden with tor?
<odisseus[m]>
Even if you could, that would probably be extremely inefficient
<Geras>
why wouldnt it be possible to make ipfs hidden with tor? wish it did.. what about the IPFS config that is on the ipfs app?
<voker57>
full use of IPFS requires externally accessible port
<voker57>
and ipfs routing works with IPs
<voker57>
so tor use would be problematic
<Geras>
then its no point to use ipfs then imo.. but thats me
<odisseus[m]>
That depends on what you want to achieve
<Geras>
i just wnat my ip to be hidden when using ipfs itself
<Geras>
without vpn
<odisseus[m]>
I don't thing that's possible
<eleitl[m]1>
How about i2p support?
<odisseus[m]>
AFAIK all peer-to-peer network rely on each peer functioning as a server of sorts
<Geras>
i dont use i2p

"We are using a fork of go-ipfs in the daemon. The primary changes include different protocol strings to segregate the OpenBazaar network from the main IPFS network and an increased TTL on certain types of DHT data. You can find the full diff in the readme of the forked repo. The fork is bundled in the vendor package and will be used automatically when you compile and run the server. Note that you will still see
<eleitl[m]1>
github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs import statements instead of github.com/OpenBazaar/go-ipfs despite the package being a fork. This is done to avoid a major refactor of import statements and make rebasing IPFS much easier."
<Geras>
oh i see. ipfs's fork is called openbazaar. i check that out. but tbh,i do hope IPS makes an option to hide our IP's without vpn..
<Geras>
*Ipfs's
<eleitl[m]1>
It might come eventualy, but I wouldn't be holding my breath. Much more important issues need fixing first.
