Hey guys
<shoku>
Is there a way to get a hash from a file that I haven't downloaded by is somewhere online?
<shoku>
eg I see a jpg in my browser, could I in theory right click the link and get the hash?
<shoku>
(eg if I can "save as", can I make a hash without dling the file?)

shoku: you can link to a file by a path from a root CID, as you have there. the human readable path sections are aliases for more CIDs, and IPFS translates them for you

The key thing is that a root cid captures a snapshot of a whole subtree of dirs and files
jwheare2 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<shoku>
yup?
<olizilla>
Each dir and and file in the subtree is hashed to create the root hash
<shoku>
yup
<shoku>
right so I have a folder with a bunch of stuff
<shoku>
and that makes the root hash
<olizilla>
I'm gonna gloss over sharing, but it's the same again just for fragments
<shoku>
oh I see
<olizilla>
Sharding... Peasky auto correct
<shoku>
haha
<shoku>
so you're saying if I add any file to my folder, it'll make a new hash for the folder. sure
chrsch79 has joined #ipfs

<olizilla>
Each cid resolves to block. A block that represents a directory contains a list of named links to the cids of the files and dirs it contains
<olizilla>
The names are the filenames

<shoku>
So are you saying hashes are really just a way to resolve CIDs and multiple hashes can point to the same cid?
<olizilla>
When you use an ipfs path it fetches the root cid, and find the cid of the first step of the path, fetches that block, finds the cid for the next segment of the path, fetches that and so on
<shoku>
Gotcha
<shoku>
So in the instance above, for my 001_top_games.mp3, even though the url is completely different, it's the same CID?
<olizilla>
CIDs are the formal name for ipfs hashes, as they contain more info than just the hash digest
<shoku>
would *really help* if you'd tell me yes or no to the question above, because telling me what CID are doesn't make it clear if the answer is yes or no!
<olizilla>
Pls enhance your calm, I'm on a mobile, and trying to understand the questions amid IRC spam
<shoku>
sure thing
<olizilla>
Yes
<shoku>
Thanks, I have a better understanding of what a CID is (I didn't know they were a thing, I only knew of the hashes)
<olizilla>
2 URLs can point to the same result
<shoku>
Awesome
<shoku>
So to verify I get this, let's have 2 examples:
<shoku>
User A have a folder called folder1, which contains 1.txt
<shoku>
User B has a folder called folder1, which contains 1.txt 2.txt 3.txt
<shoku>
they both decide to get the link for their folder to share with their friends
<shoku>
these links have different hashes
<shoku>
however, would the CID of 1.txt be the same? (assuming is the exact same file)
<shoku>
meaning, even if the ipfs link to the file from user A's folder and user B's folder are different, would they point to the same file?
<shoku>
also, if user A goes offline, and I use the link from user A to get 1.txt, would I be able to get 1.txt from user B?
<carsonfarmer[m]>
if the content of the files are the same, then yes, their CIDs would be identical
<carsonfarmer[m]>
and yes, because you would be requesting the CID (hash), you'd likely pull it from whomever had it and was online
<carsonfarmer[m]>
sorry to jump in there ^ shoku
