<kaplan> alexgordon, are you murican?
<alexgordon> no
<kaplan> damn
<alexgordon> kaplan: no I won't marry you!
<kaplan> lol
<purr> lol
<kaplan> I wanted to know if attending university in murica is worth it
<kaplan> It will cost me 55K/year
<kaplan> USD
<Aria> Yow.
<Aria> That really depends. If you network there, quite possibly, but that's a hell of a fee for meatspace twitter.
<kaplan> Sucks being a third worlder
<Aria> Yeah, really.
<Aria> So: Because you're Indian, in the US, you'd be evaluated on credentials, not projects, unless your resume is exceptional. There's this weird thing here where some people can just do shit and get recognition (mostly white people. Fucking racist country.) and others have to have credentials out the nose to get the same recog.
<Aria> It's harder to jump into the 'evaluate me on experience and accomplishments' pool if you're not white, essentially. But it's possible.
<Aria> However, be aware that our immigration system sucks musty donkey dong.
<alexgordon> kaplan: what job do you want to do?
<alexgordon> programming?
<kaplan> yeah
<alexgordon> kaplan: also, you want to move to the US?
<kaplan> But I am horrible at it
<kaplan> yes
<Aria> IF you want to move to the US, having a master's equivalent is _super_ useful.
<alexgordon> kaplan: I mean in the current market, I'd say it doesn't make a difference who your degree is from
<Aria> Gets you into the O-1 rather than H-1B visa program.
<kaplan> At my age devyn was writing compilers and stuff
<kaplan> I can't even write a simple webpage
<alexgordon> kaplan: afaik immigration don't care which particular college you went to, as long as it is equivalent to a US degree
<Aria> Yeah, immigration just wants a bachelor's equivalent. Masters or PhD for O-1.
<kaplan> alexgordon, employers do
<alexgordon> kaplan: not the good ones
<Aria> Yeah, that really varies.
<alexgordon> the better the employer the less they care
<kaplan> I am getting some really shitty colleges in home country
<Aria> Yeah.
<kaplan> Plus, I suck at coding
<Aria> Turns out corporate programming is less about programming well and more about communicating well.
<alexgordon> kaplan: because many people who do have a degree (even phds. especially phds) are terrible terrible programmers
<kaplan> Haha
<Aria> Colleges in the US won't neccessarily make you a better programmer. But you'll get some useful theory, and probably access to internships.
<alexgordon> kaplan: so if a company is hiring good programmers, almost by definition they are ignoring the degree and working out how competent you are from scratch
<kaplan> I want to do masters or PhD in computational linguistics
<alexgordon> Aria: but probably not worth $200k debt
<alexgordon> you could buy a house with that!
<Aria> alexgordon: Indeed.
<alexgordon> kaplan: have you checked out europe?
<kaplan> Yes
<alexgordon> and?
<kaplan> Applying there too
<Aria> Though there are cheaper colleges in the US, too. 55K/year is on the high end.
<Aria> (not ones with so much name recognition though)
<alexgordon> kaplan: also I would skip the phd if you want to make money
<kaplan> If I wanted money I would have gone for something like Investment banking
<Aria> Hehe.
<kaplan> no, really
<Aria> Struth. It's a hell of an industry.
<Aria> But the pay is very good.
<kaplan> All my extended family are businessmen
<alexgordon> kaplan: which country do you live in btw?
<kaplan> India
<alexgordon> kaplan: it seems to me that it's mostly about who you know, and what you can do
<alexgordon> kaplan: where you went to college is a distant third
<alexgordon> employeers basically want you to show them something really impressive then they can say "yep, he's not a complete idiot". lol.
<purr> lol
<kaplan> What counts as impressive?
<Aria> Depends on the employer, of course.
<Aria> PayPal? Leadership, ability to evaluate javascript and java. Ability to communicate. Open source work helps all of these, if you do it with those goals in mind.
<kaplan> Well, I can evaluate Javascript and Java
<Aria> Yeah. So the trick is being able to demonstrate it.
<kaplan> I just find it hard to actually write code
<Aria> PayPal also loves examples of user-focused design, rather than technology-focused.
<Aria> So "look, I made this work well for an end user" is more impressive to us than "look, I made a thing that uses X and Y tech"
<kaplan> I see
