<kroylar> is it possible to reinitialize the ct hdmi stream on linux?
<kroylar> that explains the problem. But this problem also shows up if I turn off the TV manually. When I turn it back on it is still blank.
<rneese> it might not be the driver it might be the tv
<rneese> on my tv the older mali driver gave issues
<rneese> like with the odroid x2 I had issues but the min I moved to the cubie and the newer kernel and driver the issue stopped
<rneese> but it was over driving the tv dvi port and the port would black out
<rneese> had to turn off and on the tv a few times to get the image back
<rneese> have you updated to a newer kernel ?

<Night-Shade> hankur: ethernet works perfectly in upstream kernel
<Night-Shade> I definately worked in 3.4.43 that I used for a while before I moved to upstream kernels
<hankur> thanks night-shade, with upstream do you mean the current sunxi?
<hankur> oh ok upstream as in linus tree?
<Night-Shade> the sunxi-devel this is the stage area for work into the main linus tree
<hankur> ah ok
<hankur> great
<Night-Shade> you need to build your own kernel but it's not that tricky
<Night-Shade> I've done a couple of blog posts about the cubietruck and getting debian working on it
<hankur> wow great, that is exactly what I need
<Night-Shade> well pure downloaded debian not from a diskimage
<hankur> can you link it?
<hankur> ah perfect ;) I read it already. nicely written
<Night-Shade> there are 3 cubietruck posts on there
<hankur> apart from the u-boot stuff, once you have it running on the cubiertruck, you just use normal debian repos?
<Night-Shade> yes
<hankur> any special stuff to install, firmware or whatnot
<Night-Shade> only thing you need to do "by hand" is the kernel
<hankur> ok
<hankur> ok I think I will order one and jump in, following your posts
<Night-Shade> I have working SMP/SATA/KVM/Ethernet/MMC/Serial
<Night-Shade> and USB
<hankur> nice
<hankur> do you know how the rtc is working?
<Night-Shade> the 3.4 sunxi kernel has support for almost all of the hardware
<Night-Shade> I know there is one and it's supported
<Night-Shade> the onboard wifi / BT is just getting sorted for the upstream kernel
<hankur> thats no problem, I don't care about that atm
<hankur> but wait, which kernel did you compile?
<emsyr> hello guys, I need hid-elecom module for bluetooth mouse working
<hankur> because in the post, you got one from linaro
<emsyr> I'm not into kernel compiling yet, where can i ask for someone to add it?
<Night-Shade> I got the linaro one cos it was easy
<hankur> ok, did you just compile on the cubietruck then?
<Night-Shade> the linaro one worked well enough for me to boot strap the board and get debian on it so I could compile on it
<hankur> ah ok
<Night-Shade> I do both
<Night-Shade> I have a cross compile environment setup too
<Night-Shade> I was trying to get a feel for how good the cubie was
<hankur> I've seen some instructions on the sunxi wiki how to set up the toolchain
<hankur> ok
<Night-Shade> in ubuntu it's this: apt-get install gcc-arm-linux-gnueabi gcc-arm-linux-gnueabihf#
<Night-Shade> without the #
<Night-Shade> make CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabi- enables the cross compiler
<hankur> nice
<Night-Shade> emsyr: no idea sorry
<Night-Shade> I normally just build on the cubie, it's got an SSD on it and while it's not quick I just leave it going
<hankur> one more question - how did you choose the kernel version from sunxi? I don't see any tags or the like
<Night-Shade> I'm mostly impressed that I can run a kvm VM
<Night-Shade> how familar are you with git?
enrico___ has quit [Quit: Bye]
<hankur> not good enough I guess ;) somewhat

<hankur> you said you compiled 3.13.0-rc6, but I don't see see how to check that out
<Night-Shade> https://github.com/linux-sunxi/linux-sunxi/tree/sunxi-devel is the tree sorry wrong link before
<hankur> no branch or tag
<Night-Shade> process is this: git clone https://github.com/linux-sunxi/linux-sunxi ; git branch sunxi-next -f remotes/origin/sunxi-next ; git checkout sunxi-next
<Night-Shade> that downloads the source, creates a local branch that is tracking the upstream and then checks it out
<Night-Shade> I should write up my notes
<hankur> is suni-next like the -rc branch?
rz2k has joined #cubieboard
<Night-Shade> sunxi-devel is the tree that the sunxi hackers are working in to prepare for 3.14
<Night-Shade> it's currently based off 3.13
<Night-Shade> once 3.14 window opens then they will push a whole pile of patches to linus
<hankur> ahh.. ok
<hankur> got me confused since 3.13 is not out yet IIRC
<Night-Shade> hans de geode from redhat looks after the tree and is very active on sunxi
<Night-Shade> yes you are right
<hankur> so when you said you moved to upstream kernels, are you using current 3.13-rc from mainline kernel?
<hankur> instead of pulling from sunxi
<Night-Shade> not exactly
<Night-Shade> I don't need to pull in the mainline and patch, I just pull the sunxi-devel tree down which is a 3.13-rc kernel with the sunxi work in
<hankur> ah ok, right. thank you a lot.
<hankur> I will order a board and get my hands dirty
DV has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]

<Night-Shade> and the debian-arm status is very hard indeed to work out
<Night-Shade> the answer is it works very well but that is hard to tell
<hankur> haha
<Night-Shade> I have an armel (arm v5) iconnect too
<Night-Shade> that is much sloooooooooooower
<Night-Shade> but also works well with debian
<hankur> I put my stuff on a raspberry, my first arm. django and postgres etc. didn't work out that well..
<hankur> but the cubietruck looks really great, because of NAND and also I need a battery backed RTC badly
<Night-Shade> the raspberry pi is a very slow
<Night-Shade> and everything is hung off the usb bus
<hankur> I had no idea
Akaizen has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<hankur> running everything from the sd card doesnt help either I guess
Akaizen has joined #cubieboard
<Night-Shade> it's very cheap and not very powerful
<Night-Shade> the cubie is much much better
<Night-Shade> I won't bother with the nand
<Night-Shade> just boot off mmc and then store data on the sata
<hankur> why, slow?
<hankur> ok
<Night-Shade> the Pi I meant as slow
<hankur> ah ok
<Night-Shade> I know that hdparm isn't a perfect test but:
<Night-Shade> root@cubietruck:~# hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
<Night-Shade> Timing cached reads: 916 MB in 2.00 seconds = 457.58 MB/sec
<Night-Shade> Timing buffered disk reads: 370 MB in 3.01 seconds = 122.91 MB/sec
<Night-Shade> /dev/sda:
<hankur> wow
<hankur> that is from an ssd?
<Night-Shade> that's an ssd
<hankur> hmm the thing is I likely need to conserve power. so if I can manage I will go with the NAND
<hankur> but I will see. first get one in my hands
<Night-Shade> mine runs off a usb port on my desktop
<Night-Shade> with the ssd without problems
<Night-Shade> so in theory it's only pulling 5v / 500mA
<hankur> yeah, I will have to check it out
<hankur> the problem is, there will be power cuts
<hankur> and I need to be able to run it from a car battery or the like for as long as possible
<hankur> I want to use it for a project in mozambique, with some gsm modems attached, as sms gateway
kivutar has quit [Quit: Ex-Chat]
<Night-Shade> it might be over kill for that
<Night-Shade> I have another embedded device a tp-link wr703n
<Night-Shade> that runs for about 3 days off a usb battery
<Night-Shade> much lower power then a cubie
<Night-Shade> but works as an AP / gsm gateway
<hankur> yeah but it is also a django website with database plus kannel, e.g. raspberry was way too slow and flakey for my taste
<Night-Shade> definately
<hankur> hmm yeah I am not really pleased with the location they want to put that in. If it was going my way, plug it in some datacenter in a bigger city
<hankur> so power is less of a concern
<Night-Shade> there is plenty of power in a car battery at least
<hankur> because I also have to sustain 3 gsm modems (one for each provider)
<Night-Shade> wow that's more tricky
<hankur> they draw ~40mA @12V
<hankur> each..
<hankur> I think it is a bad idea to put that in a place where you have two powercuts a day ;)
