<sreich> I know!
<sreich> there's about a 50% efficiency loss when I bake cookies
<sreich> because I eat half of everything I scoop out
<otters> well as long as you don't bake them to the consistency of granite
<otters> then I'll take an actual chocolate chip cookie with milk over cookie dough
<sreich> yeah, I tend to have them more on the soft side
<sreich> well, the cookie dough is *quite* tempting
<sreich> especially when you're scooping it
<otters> I never much liked the dough
<sreich> you just have to have some..
<otters> then again, I'm no good at eating squishy things

<vandemar> suppose class Foo has @v1 and class Bar<Foo has @v2, and one of Foo's functions func1 needs to know @v2. Is the usual way of doing that to def func1(v2) in Foo which does the heavy lifting, func1(v2 = @v2) in Bar that merely calls super? Or is this situation of needing subclass variables in a parent class method a sign that I'm trying to do something stupid?

<t-mart> i mean, "if false" and "if nil" are the same thing when i say "evaluate falsely"
<t-mart> neither of them are the superclass of the other
<jsaak> they are different
<jsaak> if is implemented like this
<jsaak> when expression == nil or wxpression == false then do something else do something else
<gener1c> why do it like that?
<gener1c> why not

<gener1c> if it matters
<gener1c> ah you are asking something deeper than that
<gener1c> its for historical resons
<gener1c> 0 is also null in C :)
<gener1c> and false
<gener1c> there you go problem solved
<t-mart> is it?
<gener1c> yeah
<gener1c> 0 is false and null
<t-mart> NULL == 9
<t-mart> 0
<gener1c> the ascii code for null in c is 0
<gener1c> not 9
<t-mart> that was a typo
<gener1c> ah ok
<gener1c> and c doesnt have true or false
<gener1c> 0 is evaluated as false
<gener1c> and the rest of the numbers as true
<gener1c> plus its alot more comfortable since the result of alot of actions that fail is null
<t-mart> NULL is a macro i believe. do you know where its defined? or is it inherent to the C?
<gener1c> lets say i want to grab an element in html using nokogiri
<gener1c> if i fail i get a null class
<gener1c> so id write
<gener1c> while result do; something; result = result next; end
<gener1c> its more readable
<gener1c> NULL is a macro in c

<gener1c> var ||= value

<otters> or equals
<gener1c> var = var || value
<otters> or assign, actually
<shevy> hmm
<gener1c> it assignes only if the var is not set
<shevy> so if var exists, it assigns to itself? otherwise it picks value?
<gener1c> yes!
<shevy> hmm
<gener1c> well sortof
<otters> if it's nil, it assigns
<gener1c> if it exists it is not changed if it doesnt it gets value
<otters> usually with ivars
<gener1c> whats ivars?
<otters> so if the variable evaluates to false it will get assigned
<otters> instance vars
<otters> @var
<gener1c> ah ok

<flimmern> jensn: if possible for all of them ;)
<shevy> if it is just text-output game you can use gems
<flimmern> i usually write them on osx, and the people playing them use windows
<jensn> On OS X, it is pretty easy.
<jensn> No idea about Windows.
<shevy> :)
<flimmern> what i want is a pre-bundled package, with ruby, all the gems i require, and of course my game
<flimmern> people hate it when they have to install stuff just to play a game ;)
<jensn> On OS X you can just write a thin script loading ruby and all the applications, and put all of the gems etc. in the app bundle.

<flimmern> the packaging functionality from the shoes framework seems nice, but it's generally a pain if you want to use it with a framework that is not shoes
<jensn> Tasser: If you don't care about the ruby version, you can just leave the ruby script as the main binary.
<Tasser> jensn, oke

<yoshie902a> I'm assuming this is a simple thing to do, is just no one around?
<shevy> what is .sort_by_created_at
<yoshie902a> it was my attempt to sort, which was wrong
<yoshie902a> no method, I just guessed
<shevy> exactly
<shevy> you need to somehow tell .sort how to sort
<yoshie902a> I found this @users.sort!(&:name), but I don't understand what the & is
<shevy> yeah, people often get confused by it
<shevy> @users.sort!(&:name) should be the same as @users.sort! {|x| x.name }
<shevy> unless I did a mistake now
<shevy> which could well be the case
<Mon_Ouie> Yeah, except sort! &:name won't work

<shevy> yoshie902a .sort {|a,b| a.name <=> b.name} that's just ruby's way of comparing objects
<shevy> I think it checks for ===
<shevy> yoshie902a http://ariejan.net/2007/01/28/ruby-sort-an-array-of-objects-by-an-attribute @users.sort! { |a,b| a.name.downcase <=> b.name.downcase }
<yoshie902a> I read the sort {|a,b| a.name <=> b.name} docs but don't understand it. I also saw that link, but still confused.
<yoshie902a> I'm assuming it's asc order, but I can't find anything to tell me how to do desc order
<dr_bob> yoshie902a: with sort you reverse the order by simply reversing sides of <=> in the block. With #sort_by it's more difficult: if it's numbers you can prefix a - (minus).

<poppiez> might be because the block is inside an each
<apeiros_> it doesn't matter what's in your block
<apeiros_> [1,2,3].each do true end # => [1,2,3]
<Zal> poppiez, maybe you want a block like { |s| defaults["js"]["i18n"].include(s) }
<apeiros_> you want either .any? or .all? instead of .each, I'd guess
<apeiros_> any? from the code I read
<apeiros_> Zal: you mean `include?`, include? tests against ==, not eql? (should be the same for strings, though, and then include? would be faster than any? with block)
<apeiros_> i18n = i18n - defaults["js"]["i18n"]
<apeiros_> i18n -= defaults["js"]["i18n"]
<poppiez> apeiros_: wow, didn't know you could do that

akiress [akiress!~akiress@ip70-180-38-30.br.br.cox.net] has joined #ruby

<Zal> apeiros_, got it, thank you
<apeiros_> Zal: in fact, if you implement <=> and include Comparable, you get == defined in terms of <=> for free (== will then be true if <=> returns 0)
<Zal> excellent

<moonunitt> yea
<moonunitt> i need it more indentied than the IF right?
<shevy> sure, but the thing is
<shevy> your end is too much indented compared to the "if" and "else"
<burgestrand> Indent your code correctly and these errors will be a lot easier to spot :x
<shevy> yeah ^^^
<moonunitt> ok
<moonunitt> but the compiler should pick it up fine right? its all about readablity?
<shevy> moonunitt you need to become the general. your code are your soldiers. you need to shout at them to align in order
<shevy> the compiler does not care much about indent (I'd say almost zero, but I had warnings with ruby about some mismatched indents hehe)
<burgestrand> Just because the compiler ignores your indentation does not mean you should too
<shevy> then also
<shevy> you already use a lot of lines in that code
<shevy> then you have something like:
<shevy> prompt; next_move = gets.chomp
<shevy> ah I see why you want to do it like that

<shevy> end
<shevy> end
<moonunitt> oh yea ok
<shevy> you see?
<moonunitt> yea
<shevy> dont do something like:
<shevy> def foo
<shevy> something_here
<shevy> if foo
<moonunitt> so you can tell each "Branch" easier?
<shevy> puts "do something"
<shevy> end
<shevy> end
<shevy> yeah
<moonunitt> ok
<moonunitt> yea if you can fix indents and i can try and debug that would be cool
<shevy> also remember the ruby mantra... less is more... shorter is better
<moonunitt> yea, im going off a tut. after i get this to run i need to comment and try and clean it up and make it run with less lines

<shevy> yeah but most importantly, be consistent in your indentation
<moonunitt> use tab key?
<shevy> nah
<apeiros_> shevy: pastebins…
<shevy> but if you really insist, then use tabs. but use them consistently. I myself though use consistently two spaces
<moonunitt> im useing geddit i htink its set for 4 spaces pertab
<shevy> apeiros_ I can't read the last character :(
<apeiros_> shevy: pastebins...

<burgestrand> But it’s a bit better I agree
<moonunitt> ah yea i had 2 ifs instead of a elsif
<moonunitt> yea ill keep it in mind and work on it now. ive been the only one reading my code till now
<burgestrand> And even then it’s bringing you trouble ;)
<apeiros_> awesome indentation…
<burgestrand> You should’ve seen it before
<moonunitt> lol
<moonunitt> yea ill def work on my indentaton, been half assing it but now know why its a bad idea
<burgestrand> For programming, you spend most of your time debugging, finding *where* bugs are
<moonunitt> also my problem was i had a IF instead of prompt so it was waitng for it to end
<davidcelis> i'm not sure you know a different important reason for indenting
<davidcelis> in that when you indent the way you currently are
<davidcelis> it's ugly as fuck, and people like us that have to read it will be much less likely to do so
<any-key> oh hey I fixed it: http://codepad.org/HLBQpZ9l
<moonunitt> yea, ive debugged some sample code, I kidna like it better than codeing

<burgestrand> any-key: well, it did show the bug at least

<any-key> :P
<apeiros_> any-key: good editors fail at syntax for two simple reasons: they (almost) never implement the full syntax, and they have to deal with incomplete syntax
<any-key> indentation saves lives!!
<any-key> apeiros_: still, for most program flow they do a damned good job
<any-key> I'm just talking about indentation as you type new code
<any-key> most editors do a good job of this
<any-key> simple things like indenting after defining a function
<shevy> yeah
<shevy> I have had 1.9.3 yell at me for mismatched indent
<any-key> and Vim's autoindent is the shittt
<apeiros_> sadly, vim is shit…

<any-key> blahblahblah

<burgestrand> hehe, I’d commit so much crap :p
<any-key> I'm a big fan of plain editors
<Tasser> apeiros_, you know you can build that with guard?

<apeiros_> I'm talking about integration of a couple of interactions with git
<any-key> in an IDE

<any-key> that's why I'm a fan of a strict editor and separate tools rather than an IDE

<any-key> ugh I hated that
