<pcercuei> larsc: I heard you have a Nanonote and like to build Linux kernels
<larsc> don't trust the rumors
<larsc> need to go buy milk, shops close in 15 min
<pcercuei> there's no rush
fengling has joined #qi-hardware
<eintopf> wahhh no milk
<eintopf> no shoko milk :(

<larsc> pcercuei: I'm back btw.
<eintopf> larsc: do you will be at elce?
<eintopf> larsc: the linux sound architecture stuff (ALSA) is so 1990 years style :-/
<larsc> I'll be there
<larsc> ALSA is super advanced
<eintopf> (be there) ah, ok.
<eintopf> yea but to make some modern stuff people adding new layers in userspace
<eintopf> e.g. pulseaudio
<eintopf> using plain ALSA -> you don't like to do that anymore
<larsc> ALSA at the core is like Vulkan
<larsc> difficult to use for endusers, but can deliver maximum performance
<eintopf> the new open 3d api stuff?
<larsc> yes
<larsc> come to my talk and you'll learn all about it ;)
<eintopf> oh I don't know if I will be at ELCE
<eintopf> but I recently wrote some DSP plugin
<larsc> pulseaudio is the hero though we all needed
<eintopf> for the alsa API stuff
<eintopf> ladsp
<eintopf> or something like that
<eintopf> don't remember the name
<eintopf> but it was funny, I had some wine plugin wrapper loader for winamp DSP plugins
<eintopf> and feed ladspa(I think that was the name) with that
<eintopf> I think ladspa is already deprecated?
<larsc> I've never heard of it before, no idea
<eintopf> ah, ok.
<eintopf> I looked for an easy way to add some DSP for a pulseaudio output
<larsc> I think pulseaudio has a nativ API for that
<eintopf> yes
<eintopf> you can load some ladspa plugin (so far I understand)
<eintopf> I tried that at first
<eintopf> but this is only some other technique
<pcercuei> < eintopf> using plain ALSA -> you don't like to do that anymore
<pcercuei> nobody ever used plain ALSA
<pcercuei> you used libasound, aka the user-space part of ALSA
<eintopf> that's the dsp plugin for pulseaudio
<pcercuei> which has always been a terrible pain in the ass
<pcercuei> for devs, at least
<eintopf> pcercuei: the kernel part is ALSA, but userspace part can also be ALSA
<eintopf> and yes I think it's libasound :-/
<pcercuei> PulseAudio replaces libasound, and that's a good thing
<pcercuei> IMHO
<eintopf> but I need to run pulseaudio in userspace :(
<eintopf> I don't like to have latency
<pcercuei> well, you ran libasound in user-space before, right?
<eintopf> I think so, before
<eintopf> I also used some time ago OSS
<eintopf> and not ALSA
<eintopf> and yes I used OSS when OSS was not in kernel anymore
<eintopf> but OSS, the name is open sound system
<eintopf> but it's not open :(
<eintopf> that's my current soundcard
<eintopf> and I am very happy with this device
<eintopf> there are no noising when I change the volume, not so much complicated mixer settings...
<eintopf> I had a emu10k1 before
<eintopf> it worked well as well, and I know the emu10k1 chip has some hardwaremixing stuff feature - I think I never get this feature running
<eintopf> and some in-hardware effects stuff
<eintopf> emu10k1 is okay...
<eintopf> the fiio stuff is geat, I can also plug it into my notebook
<eintopf> but digital coax output, I have now a converter from digital coax <-> digital optical
<eintopf> ...
<eintopf> I am interessted in ALSA kernel stuff, because you really need to know how doing things fast
<eintopf> otherwise somebody will replace ALSA with a faster alternative ;-)
<eintopf> and what about real time linux + ALSA real time use-cases
<eintopf> larsc: I really don't like LF conferences, this is all too much marketing stuff and LF is far away from the community
