<mpmc> Really random question for you guys. I have an NSA310a and at the back on top of the Ethernet & USB port it has a weird sponge. Any clue as to what the hell that is? I don't think it's a heatsink..
<atsampso1> is there something in the case moulding that presses against it?
<atsampso1> assuming it's the thing in http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2012/01/zyxel-nsa310-review/img_0278-1280x1024.jpg that you're talking about...
<mpmc> atsampso1: Lol, yes that thing :p
<mpmc> Interestingly there's also a white patch (looks like paper) on the metal case where the Ethernet & port rest..

<apritzel> montjoie: OK, by now I rewrote good parts of their BSP driver (partly to appease checkpatch), fixed some bugs on the way and found some undocumented bits (like bit24 in the 2nd DMA descriptor word)
<jelle> oh if you need a tester for the orange pi pc eth driver, ping me ;)
<apritzel> jelle: yeah, would be very helpful, as I don't have hardware (yet ;-)
<jelle> oh *shrug*
<mpmc> jelle: I have an orange pi pc too, I was going to buy another but it looks like they've stopped production.
<jelle> mpmc: really.. hrrm
<jelle> ah for serious things I've ordered the C.H.I.P.
<mpmc> I got one of those too lol
<jelle> since from what I've heard it will be supported mainline
<mpmc> Hopefully with any luck so will the O Pi PC.
<jelle> SMP/ethernet does not work yet
<ssvb> jelle: SMP does work, ethernet is only a matter of time
<jelle> ssvb: oh so that patch I saw enabled SMP
<jelle> sorry being quiet new here :)
<ssvb> the next U-Boot release will probably get PSCI for H3 (that's what you need for SMP), you can check the patches from wens
<mpmc> I'm guessing apritzel is writing a driver, I'm more than happy to test any images (I have no clue how to build my own yet).
<ssvb> H3 is going to have excellent mainline support just because there are many users of this hardware
<jelle> ssvb: ah yup seen them, I guess I could test it
<jelle> mpmc: building your own image is actually quiet easy
<ssvb> it will even probably take less time for H3 mainline support to mature than waiting for CHIP boards to get shipped ;-)
<mpmc> jelle: I tried to build the kernel sources supplied by the manufacturer & it's a complete mess...
<apritzel> mpmc: yeah, don't go there
<jelle> mpmc: oh I use hans his branch
<apritzel> and if you do anyway, be sure to wash your hands afterwards ;-)
<mpmc> jelle: I don't know who that is & where his branch is :p
<ssvb> apritzel: I'm amazed at your willingness to do the work even without having the hardware yet, and I hope you will not encounter many unpleasant surprises when you actually start testing it :-)
<mpmc> I had a rough day yesterday trying to get my NSA310 (with uboot 1.14) to boot properly, damn systemd!
<ssvb> mpmc: it has some information about the current status and usable git branches
<jelle> I hope no one is working on a sy8106 driver for u-boot?
<apritzel> ssvb: I need some cheap arm64 hardware for my other work
<mpmc> ssvb: I've seen that before (even added to it) looks like someone went crazy and added a ton more..
viccuad has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb> apritzel: yes, I also need arm64 hardware for testing neon assembly optimizations
JohnDoe3 has joined #linux-sunxi
<apritzel> ssvb: yeah, SIMD optimization is always fun!
<ssvb> apritzel: I'm just a bit skeptical about the quality of any untested work
<apritzel> me too ;-)
<jelle> apritzel: do you have the driver code somewhere?
<apritzel> I was hoping that their driver would at least work somehow
<apritzel> (for some values of "work")
<apritzel> jelle: not yet, but will probably push it to a repo today or tomorrow ...
<jelle> ok
<apritzel> depending on the progress with montjoie's driver I may post it even next week
JohnDoe_71Rus has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<apritzel> the more I am looking at this driver the more things I find ...
<MoeIcenowy> mpmc: newest systemd requires linux kernel 3.8+
<MoeIcenowy> I have stuck my systemd version to 215
<MoeIcenowy> in order to use it on lichee 3.4
<jelle> I'm waiting on my usb ethernet adapter for more work on my q8 tablet :p
<jelle> will make it a ton easier then using an usb stick
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: q8 adapter?
<MoeIcenowy> what soc?
<MoeIcenowy> s/adapter/tablet
<MoeIcenowy> mainline or linux-sunxi-3.4 or lichee?
<jelle> it runs mainline, but a lot of things won't work
<jelle> MoeIcenowy: https://linux-sunxi.org/TZX-723Qa4 this random one
<jelle> and I have another similiar one
<mpmc> MoeIcenowy: I'm not building the kernel for the OPiPC (yet) I was building for my NSA310 (it has serial pins & access to an old uboot). I was building 4.3.3 & it kept dying on boot because my kernel didn't have cgroup and a bunch of other stuff needed by systemd. :)
<MoeIcenowy> I think for tablets I won't use mainline until disp driver is done
<MoeIcenowy> mpmc: so...go to the README of systemd
<MoeIcenowy> it will tell you the features needed
Ketsa has quit [Quit: WeeChat 0.3.8]
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: it's a 800x480 or 1024x600 device?
<jelle> uhh 1024x600
<MoeIcenowy> I don't think a Q8 device can have 1024x768
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: you'd fix it
<MoeIcenowy> 1024x600 is ok
<mpmc> MoeIcenowy: I did :) I got it working, took me an hour to build the kernel in a chroot (I had to do it three times)!
<jelle> oh I see MoeIcenowy
<MoeIcenowy> my q8 a33 tablet is a 800x480
<MoeIcenowy> terrible
<MoeIcenowy> lots of softwares do not work well
<jelle> indeed :p
<MoeIcenowy> midori cannot even be streched to the size
<jelle> I need to make wifi work, but for that a rda5991 driver is required
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: it seems that no rda5991 in the standard a33 sdk
<MoeIcenowy> I have the A33 tablet porting guide
<jelle> there is a driver somewhere..
<MoeIcenowy> (it's in Chinese
<MoeIcenowy> you can try linux-3.4-sunxi
<ssvb> MoeIcenowy: simplefb works perfectly fine in the mainline kernel
<MoeIcenowy> ssvb: for lcd it's also ok?
<ssvb> MoeIcenowy: yes, of course
<MoeIcenowy> a33 have only lcd (in rgb or lvds port)
<jelle> MoeIcenowy: yeah but I'd want a mainline driver, so I need to finish that some day
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: porting is at least easier than writing it
<MoeIcenowy> I also want my gsl1680 and esp8089 driver ported to mainline
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: what gsl1680 driver for lichee have you used?
<MoeIcenowy> or you didn't even use a gsl1680 driver?
<jelle> MoeIcenowy: I haven't used lichee
<ssvb> jelle: "I hope no one is working on a sy8106 driver for u-boot?" - does it mean that you want to do this work yourself?
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: terrible
<MoeIcenowy> But it's a pity that my tablet have no uart
<jelle> ssvb: hans suggested he can help me get it working so yes hopefully tuesday I will do some work on it
<MoeIcenowy> so can usb gadgets work now?
<ssvb> jelle: great, that's one of the things on the list
<MoeIcenowy> (I have a modified adbd in the userspace
<jelle> ssvb: hans gave a linux kernel dev. intro in the hague which I followed so that's how I ended up here ;-)
<jelle> MoeIcenowy: I think if you have an usb device in u-boot then OTG should work and a usb gadget driver loaded?
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: I didn't use mainline now
<ssvb> jelle: "I haven't used lichee" - it is not particularly difficult, you don't need to have exceptional skills to try it
<MoeIcenowy> maybe I may use my rtl8723bs a33 device (a tablet with a broken touchscreen)
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: https://github.com/Icenowy/linux-kernel-lichee-a33 it's a modified version of lichee kernel
<MoeIcenowy> by me
<MoeIcenowy> It works on GNU/Linux
<jelle> ssvb: sure, but why would I use it? I rather have the missing drivers supported in the mainline kernel. I guess it's handy for testing?
<MoeIcenowy> (but its gsl1680 driver uses closed-source blobs
<jelle> the gsl1680 driver requires some firmware yeah
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: at least lichee is a daily usable kernel
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: y
<ssvb> jelle: yes, it's handy for testing
<MoeIcenowy> but I used the version with a kernel blob
<jelle> ah I see
<MoeIcenowy> as for my tablet the blobless version do not work
<jelle> ssvb: I ordered these tablets for fun hacking, nothing serious
<MoeIcenowy> but this lichee do not still contain rda driver
<MoeIcenowy> now I have 2 a33 tablets
<jelle> MoeIcenowy: ah bummer
<MoeIcenowy> one for hacking
<MoeIcenowy> and another for partly serious work
<jelle> I made a begin here with porting the rda 5990 https://github.com/jelly/sunxi-rda5990
<MoeIcenowy> to relay Wi-Fi in my classroom
<jelle> there the original driver
<MoeIcenowy> all rk3188...
<jelle> oh that matters for the driver
<MoeIcenowy> I heard that rk has also a mysterious configuration system like sys_config.fex
<MoeIcenowy> right?
<jelle> oh ofcourse since different gpio ports I guess?
<wigyori> mripard: do you know if anyone is working on networking on h3?
<jelle> wigyori: we just talked about it and apritzel seems to be working on it ;)
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: good luck to you for porting
<jelle> MoeIcenowy: yeah well give me a year
<apritzel> wigyori: yes, I am on it, basically porting and fixing the BSP driver
<apritzel> wigyori: also montjoie is working on a driver from scratch
<apritzel> so ideally there will be something working soon (either way)

<SadSmile> Hey, so how's that new ARM chip with SATA support coming along from Allwinner?
<WarheadsSE> ? Which
<libv> remix OS offers "Experience unparalleled performance"
<libv> comparing a quad core haswell i7 against a galaxy note 5
<libv> almost 3x as fast!
<libv> amazing!
<WarheadsSE> SadSmile: you need to be more specific.
<SadSmile> I heard some rumors that Allwinner are working on a new ARM chip with sata support. Their last one was A20 which is getting a bit dated.
* mpmc curses cheap usb cables..
<WarheadsSE> SadSmile: might want to have more than rumors.
<libv> mpmc: there are usb2/3 devices which pass through and measure voltage/current
<SadSmile> yeah, I might. So...... any news?
<mpmc> libv: It's my own fault for being cheap, wire so thin you could cut through it with your finger nail :/
<libv> still, google for usb power meter
<libv> then you see how different cables behave differently, or age differently
<KotCzarny> mpmc, buy a bunch of connectors and solder yourself nice 22awg cable
<KotCzarny> :>
<mpmc> KotCzarny: Lol, you tried soldering one handed?
<KotCzarny> mpmc, legs? teeth?
<mpmc> KotCzarny: Lol, xD
