<potato__> VargaD, which drive did you use ? I've checked a thoshiba, a WD and a seagate 2.5" drive and they're all between 0.55 and 1 A, don't know if it require more power to "turn on" the drive
<VargaD> but as you said the USB 2.0 has 0.5 amp limit
newbie|2 has joined #cubieboard
newbie|2 is now known as FourthDr
<potato__> yeah, technically it's 0.5 A but I saw some USB charger that could supply more than 0.5 A (but nowhere near 2.5A). If the cubietruck works with "standard" 0.5 A usb without a hdd, theoritically I could hook up a 1 A hdd and power both with a 1.5 A usb charger
<potato__> in theory it seems feasible, will have to try it out
<VargaD> I think you need some regulated power supply as the voltage might decrease when you turn the whole thing on
<VargaD> I wasn't lucky and my usb charger wasn't good engouh
deasy has joined #cubieboard
<potato__> I'm trying to find one on amazon... at first sight none are marked as "regulated" (or maybe it's just not in the description)
<potato__> how do you know if it's regulated or not without buying it ?
<VargaD> a moment, I found one but the description is in Hungarian
<potato__> nice! do you have the make/model # ?
<potato__> thanks!

<VargaD> but it is easier to find a regulated 5V power supply
stefanro has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<potato__> you mean regulated power supply are more common ?
deasy has quit [Quit: Nom d'un quark, c'est Edmonton !]
<VargaD> usb chargers usually don't have to be regulated you only want to charge some battery
<VargaD> it is easy to buy some high quality 5V power supply
<potato__> so if I understand correctly, only the power supply powering the usb battery (something like this: http://www.amazon.com/EasyAcc%C2%AE-12000mAh-Portable-Smartphone-Bluetooth/dp/B008YRG5JQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388279214&sr=8-2) need to be regulated ?
<VargaD> soory I don't understand, this seems to be some battery that charges phone
<potato__> it is, I'm planning to power the cubietruck with it ie: power supply -> usb battery -> cubietruck
<VargaD> I plan to buy a cubieboard hdd addon and a regulated 12V power supply, I think that sould work well for 3.5" hdd
<VargaD> I have read on forums that many people have problem with usb chargers and 2"5 hdd, I also tried once with a cheap usb charger and it didn't work even through the wattage was OK in theory
drachensun has joined #cubieboard
<buZz> i bought some 4A 5V supply from ebay for ~8 euros
<buZz> more than enough umf
<VargaD> is that a usb charger?
<buZz> no
<buZz> LED psu
<buZz> something like this;
<potato__> VargaD, sometimes usb charger advertise the total amperage of all the port combined, so maybe it didn't work because the port the cubietruck was connected supplied less than required, eg: 2 port, 0.5 A per port advertised as 1A usb charger
<VargaD> that charger has only one port
<potato__> ok, well then maybe I'm better off using a normal battery connected to the board instead of a usb one
<VargaD> do you want to run cubieboard on a battery with hdd?
<potato__> yes, I've read somewhere it was supported and how to do it. Unfortunately, I can't find the link...
<VargaD> It is getting quite late here, you should ask someone more qualifyed than me, the charger you linked might be good enough, I can't tell for sure...
<VargaD> Good night
<potato__> ok, thanks, good night!
<potato__> btw if you plan to use a 3.5" hdd, maybe this could be useful : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c_utSSl2ak
<VargaD> thanks, it is a bit tricky, with cubieboard I it is more straightforward as it doesn't have any support and you have to connect it correctly :)
<potato__> ah I see, well good luck to you!

<emx> the answer is: yes. and you have to compile it into the kernel, otherwise kernel compile will fail.
<mnemoc> no clue what kernel tree are you using, but pm on sunxi requires interaction with the axp
<mnemoc> but you can disable it in the kernel sources AND script.bin to be able to live without
<emx> mnemoc, i use 3.4.67
<mnemoc> the usual cause of troubles if you disable the AXP driver there is because the script.bin references AXP GPIOs
<mnemoc> and that leads to panics
<emx> mnemoc, i wont mess with that. compiling axp into the kernel is just sufficient for my skills :P
<mnemoc> linux-sunxi's sunxi-3.4's sun7i_defconfig should have the AXP enabled by default
<mnemoc> if not, please submit a patch (to the mailing list) enabling it
<emx> i'm sure it is. i removed lots of drivers which 1) i wont use and 2) increase build time unnecessarily.

<rneese> hey wolfy
<rneese> well I managed to generate a jessie img but its 1.7 gig
<rneese> I have to get a smaller install on it
<wolfy> why ?
<rneese> I dont need all the gcc and headers and crud that the builder installs
<rneese> I am going to reflash the wheezy img and update it to jessie Iguess
<rneese> I am making a .img file of the jessie
<wolfy> or you could apt-get remove what you do not need
<rneese> it will be good for a build system I guess

<rneese> I am going to work on the builder syatem and rm from it alot to
<rneese> but the kernel/firmware/headers his install /builder script does is 600 megs alone
<rneese> and there is no video out on it
<wolfy> apt-get remove && apt-get autoremove
<rneese> alot to learn but you all act like everyone shoud know what there doing when peope are learning
<rneese> yes I know that but knowing everything to rm is the big thing
<rneese> having to diff the 2 images
<rneese> and then make a rm script
<rneese> thats time consuming
<wolfy> or you could start from scratch and install a minimal system
<rneese> I have tried and it failed
<rneese> followed this
<wolfy> i am not yet familiar enough with debian but in centos I've created a kickstart which installs a super minimal system. and we also created a minimal.iso which is a but larger because it mimics RH's idea of a minimal system
<rneese> going to retry
<wolfy> *a bit larger
<wolfy> i am 100% debian has similar tools
<wolfy> damn fingers
<wolfy> i am 100% sure that debian has similar tools
<mnemoc> debian doesn't provide rootfs tarballs afaik
<rneese> you can pull them
<rneese> and I have a root tarball
<rneese> I know how to make a root tarball
<rneese> I have a script that does it
<mnemoc> "minimal" would be the basic outcome of debootstrap
<rneese> but then having the right kernel and modules
<rneese> and other needed parts
