<freeroute> hi, just got a Galaxy s2 and was wondering what the best method of rooting it was under Linux. I'm mainly trying to follow this guide - http://itsfoss.com/complete-beginner-guide-root-samsung-galaxy-s2-ubuntu-linux/ - but so far I was wondering if it's a good idea to download a heimdall package which is meant for Ubuntu 12.10 (I'm on 12.04), and to a lesser extent whether the linked Siyah kernel
<freeroute> is the only 'rooted' kernel and whether I can also use a different kernel (for example Siyah-v5-MCM-i9100-vsync_sysfs-20130217 by MCM) for rooting purposes.
<freeroute> but of course, if anyone has a better suggestion for steps to follow, then I would very much like to hear it :)

<Mir> freeroute: try towelroot
<Mir> that worked on my weird S3 Stellar
<Mir> thats how i rotted my phone
<freeroute> oh nice it's developed by geohot
<freeroute> hah that's sick, just download tr.apk and run that, nice

<freeroute> Mir: it says "This phone isn't currently supported."
<freeroute> which is weird, since i9100 is pretty much _the_ s2
<freeroute> also, 4.1.2

<juliane> Hi, I tried to flash a recovery image on my new Galaxy S5 with heimdull on Linux jessy. I tried from the debian repo and from the git source code but didn't succeed:https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/issues/259#issuecomment-84452965
<juliane> Any suggestions?
|Night| has joined #teamhacksung-support
<freeroute> juliane: I don't know the answer to your question (I'm trying to root s2), but did you have issues with compiling?
<juliane> freeroute: compiling went smoothly
<freeroute> juliane: well, not that I had any success with it, but did you try towelroot.com ?
<juliane> freeroute: it seems to be all about donations :P
<freeroute> click onna di lambda mon
<juliane> I don't think I want to use that with that little information and an untrusted possibly non open source apk.
<freeroute> well it's from geohot
<freeroute> he legit

<freeroute> juliane: I'm on 12.04. Heimdall packages are only for 12.10 and 13.10. Should I compile it or install a 12.10 package?
<juliane> freeroute: I don't know. Why do you ask me in specific?
<freeroute> juliane: because you've compiled it once successfully and thus have more experience than me.
<juliane> freeroute: I just followed the instructions in the Linux README. It's easy.
<freeroute> cool, in that case: Beam me up scotty!
<juliane> freeroute: did you manage to root your s2?
<freeroute> juliane: no, but I wanted to install CM anyway and they say that rooting the stock ROM is not necessary nor required.
<freeroute> juliane: the only dep I'm missing is qt5-default, but that's only required when I'm going to run the front-end interface right?
<juliane> freeroute: try it, I already had it installed
<freeroute> juliane: cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release .. <--- do I have to fill something instead of those dots?
<juliane> @freeroute no, you have to write two dots.
<freeroute> ah cool
<juliane> freeroute: it refers to the parent directory
<freeroute> juliane: http://kpaste.net/ae6 - it's still nagging about qt5. When I do make afterwards it says make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
<freeroute> I guess I'mm just install qt5 and break some packages. #yolo
<juliane> you should install qt5
<juliane> sure make complains if cmake failed before
<freeroute> yeah the qt5 install removed qdbus, whatever that is.
<freeroute> -_- http://kpaste.net/0dc5
<freeroute> and here I was thinking every dep was resolved
<juliane> freeroute: did the cmake command succeed?
<freeroute> juliane: dunno, it said this - http://kpaste.net/be6e
<juliane> freeroute: looks good to me
<juliane> freeroute: sorry, I've no idea about the other problem. Try googling it.
<freeroute> yeah I'm just going to do a liveUSB of Ubuntu 13.10 and install their package
<freeroute> this looks like a dependency hell from here
<freeroute> my buntu is just too damn old
<juliane> try updating

<freeroute> I'm going to migrate to either 14.04 at some point in time or to Arch or something like that
<freeroute> but for now I first have to figure out my backup strategy
<juliane> I love my debian, always returning back to that. ;)
<freeroute> yeah I wanted to go for Debian first, but their stable has too old packages and their unstable/testing had delayed security packages / more breakage.
