<lightydo> fche, drsmith: so on my ubuntu vm at first I saw that it did not have System.map (which is in boot) so I added a soft link to it but still did not get the context vars. On the other hand on my fedora 27 vm, I see the context vars...

<mjw> lightydo, it has been some time ago I tried ubuntu, maybe this helps? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Systemtap

<lightydo> mjw: I have the dbg syms installed. it just doesn;t seem to have the context vars for some kernel functions.
<mjw> strange, so some do show params, others don't?
<lightydo> most do, some don't
<mjw> maybe the debuginfo is not complete/bad for those functions?
<lightydo> I am looking at the link for systemtap/ubuntu again...

<fche> lightydo, ubuntu kernels may be victim to linus's years'old decision to suppress gcc vta - high'quality debuginfo
<fche> distros should override that
<fche> see the 'known issues', last entry, in any recent systemtap release notes :(
<fche> lightydo, you might consider opening a ubuntu kernel distro bug about this
<mjw> hmmm, not having vta also means not having locviews with gcc8

<lightydo> fche, thanks. I guess I'll have to resort to compile the kernel myself and get the dbgsyms

<fche> pls do consider filing a formal bug with ubuntu though
<fche> overriding that silly kernel build setting should be uncontroversial
