Hey fellas. Soo.. I used to program all the time, but I've been out of the game for a while (in the U.S. Army for 5 yrs). In a while I'll be getting back to it, and would like to use the Only Best Language There Is. What kind of tools should I focus on to be marketable?

I'm doing something like this str=JSON.parse(File.open("names.json","r").readlines.to_s) but instead of returning a hash, I'm being returned an array. if I try to force it using :object_class, I get a message about not converting a symbol to a hash.. what am I missing? I've verified the string read from the file is valid json too
