cfbolz changed the topic of #pypy to: PyPy, the flexible snake (IRC logs: https://botbot.me/freenode/pypy/ ) | use cffi for calling C | the secret reason for us trying to get PyPy users: to test the JIT well enough that we're somewhat confident about it

<njs> fijal: simpson: I think the backstory here is that Instagram did some experiments with PyPy -- who knows how carefully -- and for some reason decided it wasn't working, so they needed to do their own thing... and then Carl is the guy hired to do their own thing. So his perspective is just like "hey, I like implementing VMs, someone's paying me to implement a VM, cool"
<njs> (also iiuc Guido interrupted his talk to swear at him for being condescending, so it isn't just PyPy that they're annoying :-))
<njs> also apparently their workload has like, no back-edges, is a theory they have about why tracing jits might not be helpful

<cfbolz> njs: I think we aren't bothered by them not using pypy, more by the python reimplementation effort du jour never looking at past efforts

<Chriky> Hello, sorry if I'm interrupting something.
<Chriky> I don't know if people are familiar with Google Code Jam, it is algorithms competition that Google run every year
inhahe__ has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<Chriky> Previously you can the code on your own PC and uploaded the results, this year they changed it to run on their servers
<Chriky> So basically, you can no longer use Pypy
<Chriky> This pretty much makes Python unfeasible as a language to use (despite Google supporting it)
<Chriky> Is there any way to (maybe using pypy, maybe not) compile Python down to asm, C or C++ and then submit it as a C++ program
<Chriky> Or would this have to be written in RPython? (in which case, probably would just use Java or C++ directly)

<lesshaste> Chriky, I think you are looking at cython
<lesshaste> which is surprisingly easy to yse
<lesshaste> use
<Chriky> Yeah I looked at that, I don't think there is any way to do what I want really. The C code has to just be a single source file (possibly using the stdlib)
<Chriky> So it would have to generate all the code for any python stdlib I used
<Chriky> plus all the GC stuff etc
<Chriky> Probably easier to just try and convince Google to include Pypy as a runtime on their system
<lesshaste> good luck

<arigato> pypy itself is just one C source file... (it's really many, but that's just because compilers would require many hundreds of GB to compile one)
<arigato> so, no, you're thinking about RPython and that's not Python at all

<ronan> arigato: are you coming though?
<arigato> ronan: I don't know yet
<antocuni_> ronan: I submitted a talk about testing (the same I gave in cape town)
<antocuni_> ronan: good idea about the cpyext talk, I think it's good to have a pypy one
