<Joerg-Neo900> electronyc: actually nobody is working on website update. I lack the competence to do web editing, and since so many other stuff dropped on my feet I lack the time to write updates/news either. Also what ravelo said is partially to the point, there's no much newsworthy stuff. Alas we lack a PR officer who enjoys writing background stories
<Joerg-Neo900> Oksana is ricgt I'm considering updates high priority. But I don't know what to do about it, since... see above
<Joerg-Neo900> EffSquared: you could use a Secure element SIM smartcard in SIMslot#2
<Joerg-Neo900> yes, Devuan seems to be on 1.0 release now. Last time we mentioned that in our newsletter we received massive bashing from people who don't like Devuan :-S
<Joerg-Neo900> for the details and rationale about Devuan, see what Wizzup said
<Joerg-Neo900> it's to the point

<enyc> blourgh
<enyc> Joerg-Neo900: r.e. devuan surely you can explain the heterogenuous-options and devuan as default rather than it looking like "we only want devuan" i.e. to placate/reduce needless unhelpful complaining ... ??
<Joerg-Neo900> we didn't even say anything about "devuan supported on Neo900", we just had the "great, Devuan and Maemo cooperate" which was enough to make disgruntled users turn their back on the project
<Joerg-Neo900> it's not a big loss since those users - when becoming customers - would have false expectations about the project anyway, which would give us a lot of trouble in CR
<Joerg-Neo900> but I don't need to have another similar shitstorm

<Joerg-Neo900> I'll define the BSP we plan to deliver with Neo900: a bare bones single-user CLI-only linux system that's not based on any particular distro and can get upgraded to whatever linux distro you like (by replacing the PID1=ash by your favorite init system)
<Joerg-Neo900> kernel, core-utils, bash, openssh. That's it
<Joerg-Neo900> a few scripts to load and tickle the drivers for the device-specific HID/sensors/peripherals
<Joerg-Neo900> possibly ALSA
<Joerg-Neo900> add a BIG FAT warning that Neo900 UG the company is *NOT* involved into integrating the drivers into *any* particular linux or other distro, that's up to the community
<Joerg-Neo900> we just make sure we provide POC-drivers that suffice to test all peripherals for proper function
<Joerg-Neo900> and that's exactly what no other company does, they all provide a complete OS with usually closed blob drivers
<MonkeyofDoom> so users are going to have to work to get the drivers into staging and then the main tree?
<Joerg-Neo900> nah, afaik all drivers are already mainstream
<Joerg-Neo900> main tree
<MonkeyofDoom> ah, then no worries
<Joerg-Neo900> if there's a driver missing, we will provide it and we'll do in a way that's easy to get upstream
<Joerg-Neo900> since such "missing driver" is only a tiny lack of patching an existing one
<Joerg-Neo900> mind you, we have no "sekrit knowledge", we need to use same info and datasheets all the gifted linux kernel devels also have access to
<MonkeyofDoom> right
<Joerg-Neo900> so odds are those gifted devels already made all the drivers
<Joerg-Neo900> if one is missing, we either patch an existing similar driver to accommodate our particular hardware, or we help Linus, Pali, freemangordon and friends to do that, by providing all the datasheets we have and all the knowledge we gathered
<Joerg-Neo900> I already did that for the BQ24150 kernel driver Pali wrote according to my specs, for N900
<Joerg-Neo900> and iirc for a few other ones
<Joerg-Neo900> LIS302? BQ27xxx?
<Joerg-Neo900> ooh, and the scary N900 USB hostmode hack
<Joerg-Neo900> Neo900 will have working genuine hostmode, without hacks needed ;-)
<Joerg-Neo900> ~h-e-n
<infobot> hen is probably hostmode-easy-now, or http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=65232, or see ~hostmode
<atk> N900 needs a hack to be a USB host?
<atk> interesting
<atk> I'm guessing the USB controller for the Neo900 is some proper thing which supports OTG?

<Joerg-Neo900> yes, and yes
<Joerg-Neo900> atk: Nokia developers claimed hostmode would be absolutely impossible on N900. well they were right ;-) Best I could do was h-e-n
<Joerg-Neo900> atk: you may bet on me getting working proper USB OTG into Neo900
<atk> :P
