<lolcat>
hello
<lolcat>
When are you done?
<lolcat>
and have you considered usb-c?
jonsger has joined #neo900
<wpwrak>
lolcat: we have considered usb c, but 1) all this would add is the better connector (we don't have anything that would enable all the other nice things usb c can do), and 2) the connector would be a VERY tight fit with the existing case, making mechanical problems likely.
<lolcat>
ah
<lolcat>
wpwrak, why is it so insanely expensive?
<wpwrak>
;-) anything is expensive in small volume. actually, it's very very cheap ;-)
<wpwrak>
but find a million buyers, and i'm sure something can be done about the price :)
<lolcat>
wpwrak, the more you wait the less the volume will be
<lolcat>
n900 will be forgotten eventually, and the hardware you are using are allready ancient
<lolcat>
like, Id love a moder phone inside the N900 case
<lolcat>
modern*
<wpwrak>
lolcat: please don't confuse working with "waiting" ;-) we'd love to have finished a long time ago, too. alas, it is a lot of work. and if you don't have an army of people to do it, it takes a while ...
<lolcat>
But doesn't china make cheap knockoffs of things all the time? Like the OQO Model 3, it is an improvement of model 2, made by chinese manufacturers
<lolcat>
wpwrak, what is left to do? is it software or?
<wpwrak>
oh, there an oqo model 3 ? i missed that !
<wpwrak>
and yes, china makes knockoffs when they see a big enough market. any original developments are still costly, even there
<wpwrak>
and what's left to do is mainly hw. design (schematics and layout), then the long overdue prototype, then checking what works and what doesn't, fixing it, and then hopefully towards the final product
<lolcat>
wpwrak, only an unofficial chinese version, considering to buy it to check it out
<mirage335>
lolcat: OQO Model 3? Where?
<wpwrak>
there are also some parallel activities, such as the sourcing of n900s, for the parts we reuse. that turned a heck of a lot more difficult thanks to the paypal-induced delay.
<lolcat>
mirage335, I want to order just to see, if it really is the model 03 like advertized then its awesome
<wpwrak>
lolcat: we had the full n900 order ready to be executed when paypal hit us. by the time they finally released the money, those n900 had vanished. and we now have to hunt down small stock that's scattered all over the world.
<mirage335>
lolcat: I'm tempted as well.
<wpwrak>
and oqo 03 for USD 90 ? if something is too good to be true, it usually isn't ;-)
<bencoh>
huhu
<MonkeyofDoom>
that's just a screen, isn't it?
<wpwrak>
ooh, right
<lolcat>
oh, doh
<wpwrak>
that sounds more reasonable then :)
<mirage335>
Ah.
<mirage335>
darn.
<mirage335>
So, where's the rest of the Model 03? Vapor?
<lolcat>
I am pretty sure I have seen some hands on with it
<lolcat>
I find it so weird there isnt more pocket computers around todau
<lolcat>
wpwrak, how much more would it cost to have like, 256gb storage?
<mirage335>
I find it weird the OQO was the last decent pocket computer. :(
<lolcat>
mirage335, yeah, imagine it with todays tech, at least 6gb ram, quad core, decent gpu
<mirage335>
And, a low-power ARM board on the side.
<wpwrak>
lolcat: dunno. joerg wants to put in the largest chip we can find and use, but no decision has been taken on that yet. basically, the longer we leave this specific choice open, the better.
<mirage335>
At this point, I'm just waiting for the UDOO x86 and Neo900 to be released.
<mirage335>
But I might still really grab a Model 03 OQO if one is available.
<wpwrak>
lolcat: (i would minimize internal flash and just have an internal memory card slot instead. then put in whatever the mass market provides. alas, nobody is listening to me :-( )
<mirage335>
Yeah, sad. The original OQO machines were of *solid* construction too, I'm not sure a knockoff would have the same quality.
<mirage335>
wpwrak: +1
<mirage335>
Speaking of the neo900 though, anyone know how much longer it is going to take?
<lolcat>
wpwrak, I dont get phone makers in that regard. I want as much memory as possible. the price difference is insginificant
<lolcat>
wpwrak, like android phones with 8gb that cant even fit its own updates
<wpwrak>
oqo was great. i have the 01 and the 01+. they were surprisingly usable, considering the form factor. alas, plagues by power issues. (short-lived batteries, and power supplies had a tendency to go up in smoke)
<lolcat>
or a handfull of apps
<mirage335>
I just wish the phones were more compatible with external flash, and were trustworthy.
<lolcat>
I want internal memory that doesnt require emptying it more than rarely
<lolcat>
have you asked nokia to sell you the chassis of the N900?
<wpwrak>
lolcat: we didn't approach nokia (or is it microsoft ?)
<lolcat>
wpwrak, didnt nokia get nokia back now? or is getting it back? Now that the dnc is over
<wpwrak>
(or microkia, nokisoft, ah, got it ... lumia !)
<lolcat>
or who knows
<wpwrak>
i don't ;-)
<wpwrak>
maybe someone else here hangs out in helsinki bars often enough to know ? :)
<DocScrutinizer05>
we DID approach Nokia
<DocScrutinizer05>
they are seeling spare parts only to approved Nokia service point dealers, in very limited quantities (per time unit), at ridiculous prices
<DocScrutinizer05>
seeling*
<DocScrutinizer05>
damn, selling*
<lolcat>
so you cant become an approved nokia service point dealer and buy a bunch?
<wpwrak>
(did) oh, sorry. got that wrong then.
<DocScrutinizer05>
please read what I wrote
<lolcat>
hm
<lolcat>
DocScrutinizer05, wouldnt it be an idea to design an all new design? like the price of a N900 is pretty high
<DocScrutinizer05>
we can source complete refurbished N900 at better prices and higher units/week rate from China than we could source spare parts from nokia
<lolcat>
DocScrutinizer05, what do you do with the parts on the inside?
<lolcat>
that you dont use
<DocScrutinizer05>
unclear, basically they are owned by our cistomers
<DocScrutinizer05>
we consider giving a moderate credit to customers who don't need a N900 board and then sell the working boards
jonsger has quit [Quit: jonsger]
<lolcat>
DocScrutinizer05, so it will be like €1000?
<DocScrutinizer05>
yes
<DocScrutinizer05>
probably
<DocScrutinizer05>
unless we get a massive boost in order numbers from the pending kickstarter
<DocScrutinizer05>
which can be done obnly after prototype show-off
<lolcat>
wouldnt the kickstarter go better with more modern hardware?
<DocScrutinizer05>
yes, maybe, if we also would provide a working OS
<DocScrutinizer05>
we can't, for anything that's not compatible to maemo5
<DocScrutinizer05>
all this is planned for STEP2
<DocScrutinizer05>
when we demonstrated that we can accomplish such a project, and community gained experience in 'porting' maemo to a new platform
<lolcat>
DocScrutinizer05, but havent this project beenr unning for like three years?
<DocScrutinizer05>
well, when you count difference between first mentioning and current date then yes. When you subtract the huge nasty delays then less
<DocScrutinizer05>
but what's the link to what we said above?

and re "Osborne Effect" we're planning to offer *very* attractive STEP2 upgrade plans for Neo900 owners
<DocScrutinizer05>
while same time explaining that we probably can't finish Neo900 when everybody would hope for a STEP2 instead of getting a Neo900 first
<DocScrutinizer05>
heck, Nokia had THREE 'prototype' models: 770, N800, N810
<lolcat>
DocScrutinizer05, If step one took three years, and is only half way, then how long will step 2 be?
<lolcat>
But the N900 had modern hardware when it was releazed
