ddfreyne: why is nanoc in the linting business?
<dkm>
bobthecow: yeah, I've tried disqus, it's fine but I'd like something I could install on my own so I always know where my data is :)
<dkm>
ugh, "data are"
<tom[]>
dkm: i feel for you. dusqus is like using gmail, convenient but now you don't even own your email
<bobthecow>
tom[]: the flip side is, it's a huge pain to own your email :)
<tom[]>
bobthecow: i have no problem with it
<tom[]>
i don't run my own servers. i pay a service provider that a) isn't an advertizing company and b) doesn't have a lopsided tos
<bobthecow>
that doesn't mean it's not a pain, just that you've chosen to take on that pain because you value owning your email more than you value whatever amount of hassle it is to own a mail server.
<tom[]>
it's not a pain at all
<bobthecow>
ohhh. you meant something different by "own your email" than i did.
<bobthecow>
carry on :)
<tom[]>
google's tos means they own your email
<bobthecow>
well. not quite. they have a license to your email.
<bobthecow>
that's not exactly the same.
<tom[]>
if they choose to close your account, keep your mail and deny you any further access, that's within their rights
<tom[]>
and they actually do this
<tom[]>
that's what i mean by own
<bobthecow>
all my email goes to two places, but the other place it goes is a pain.
<tom[]>
i am aware that my objection is nearly meaningless because everyone else in the world uses gmail, so google gets all my email too
<bobthecow>
yep :)
<tom[]>
if most people put convenience abobe all else, i can be private only by keeping quiet
<dkm>
bobthecow: tom[] there certainly is a traid off, but yes, I value my data ownership over the convenience of letting a third party store it, at least for comments, I haven't been able to ween myself from gmail yet
<dkm>
but comments are a litte different, it's not *just* my data, it's authored by others too, and I want to be able to tell anyone who wants to leave a comment exactly how that data will be used and stored
<tom[]>
and don't forget about the risks of letting other people put content on your web site
<tom[]>
when we did it, we started with a pretty harsh disclaimer of responsibility for such content
<dkm>
oh yeah, and so that's part of why I was asking what other people were doign, how are people handeling moderating?
<tom[]>
you just need to choose a nick and solve the captcha
<tom[]>
it's time i stopped using google for the captcha
<tom[]>
the radio show host is moderator. she has the option to pre-screen messages or not. she can delete messages after they are published. she also has "panic room" controls to delete all messages and/or turn off chat
<tom[]>
and the public chat user session lasts as long as the radio show is on air
