Hi, my ask: Tablet q8 A13 compatible, Uboot start with working lcd and backlight, after p 2 second pause start kernel,then backlight switch off, but i can see with a flashlight kernel boot text scrolling so lcd is ok but backlight is switched off, uboot and kernel are mainline versione (2016 rc2 and 4.x).I try to set default-.brightness-level =<100> in sun5i-q8-common.dtsi but no change.In my original fex lcd is enabled by AP
<silviop2>
-0. Where can check that all gpio/pwm default are right for kernel?

anyone with a Banana PI and a SATA disk here? I tried to hook my 2.5" SATA hdd to the bananapi's sata connector and route +5V via that small connector to the disk drive, but BPI failed to boot. Not even bootloader. I guess the disk is drawing too much power?
<topi`>
the specs say that the disk is really frugal on power and should take only max 600 mAh when spinning up
<KotCzarny>
boot without, then connect when os is booted?
Ueno_Otoko has joined #linux-sunxi
<topi`>
yeah, if I detach the SATA disk, then the Bpi boots
<KotCzarny>
also, can it be that you have connected power in reverse?
vickycq has joined #linux-sunxi
<topi`>
probably not
<topi`>
I'll check
<KotCzarny>
check the specs (not by reversing connection)
<topi`>
I think the connector is the same as on the Radxa Rock 2 (where that same HDD works just fine)
<KotCzarny>
which banana you have?
<topi`>
the "original" BPi
<topi`>
the silkscreen does not reveal much. There's "CM-3 94V-0" on the bottom side
<KotCzarny>
also, what power supply are you using
<topi`>
and mystical initials "P&Q"
<topi`>
just a MicroUSB supply 2.1 Amp
<KotCzarny>
long / thin cable?
<KotCzarny>
bad cable can 'eat' a lot of power
<topi`>
true, I need to check the quality of the cable
<topi`>
maybe use a multimeter to see how many amps actually get through
<topi`>
the BPi itself probably won't ever use the full 2 Amp
<KotCzarny>
mine (r1) uses 0.43 in idle after some tweaks (normally 0.52-0.60 in idle, and up to ~1 with full load and some io activity)
<KotCzarny>
and r1 is almost the same as original bpi
<topi`>
ok
<topi`>
is the R1 made by Lemaker or Sinovoip?
yann|work has joined #linux-sunxi
<topi`>
the origins of different BPi models are a mystery...
<KotCzarny>
clone of a clone
<topi`>
:)
<wens>
original BPi was designed by a team at FoxConn, then given to lemaker and sinovoip for production
IgorPec has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<topi`>
the BPi is probably the most economical way of creating a small NAS
<vickycq>
R1 is a sinovoip product
<topi`>
until Xunlong comes up with a dirt cheap Orange PI model with SATA onboard
<KotCzarny>
sata support is tricky, as they've dropped in-chip sata
<KotCzarny>
so only original a10/a20 have native sata, rest is usb bridge
<vickycq>
According to some Chinese website, the bpi was originally designed by a student in Harbin Institute of Technology, who is the founder of Lemaker.
<KotCzarny>
The SATA power connector (J5) and the normal power-in micro USB connector (located between SATA and SATA-pwr) are directly wired with each other (with a ferrite bead FB3 in between responsible for some voltage drops).
<KotCzarny>
so if you have multimeter you can check (and in the cable)
IgorPec has joined #linux-sunxi
<topi`>
yeah
<topi`>
looking at the BPi, that student got some talent

topi`: If you re-used the same cable set from Radxa to power the disk then polarity might be wrong
<tkaiser>
CubieTech and LinkSprite use a different polarity as Banana/Orange Pi. And since Radxa has been founded by Tom Cubie I would suspect they used the Cubieboard's polarity there.

BorgCuba: great! the intention of that patch was to make vsync controllable
<ssvb>
BorgCuba: so that your GLES application can decide whether to use it or not
<ssvb>
BorgCuba: if you do FBIO_WAITFORVSYNC ioctl right before eglSwapBuffers, then you should get perfect vsync and tear free picture

BorgCuba: and if you don't, then you get the highest FPS

finally I got the SATA HDD working with my BananaPI
<topi`>
reason: the small 2-pin power connector has the pins reversed - it just Works on a Radxa Rock 2 but for the BPI I need to reverse the pins. Not easy, since you can fit the connector only in a certain way
<topi`>
I guess if I order a SATA cable specifically for BPi, it will then have the pins in "correct" order ...
<KotCzarny>
topi, if you are agile enough, you can eject those metal pins
<KotCzarny>
then inserting them in reverse
<KotCzarny>
you will probably have to push the metal tab then they shuld slide out
<KotCzarny>
dont forget to mark the cable if you reverse them
