<deasy_> okay i can imagine their own directories for working are a mess...
<adj_> ssvb, you said: you are stating the "problem", but allwinner probably wants a "solution"
<adj_> but the reality is "they are causing a problem, but we want a solution"
<adj_> at this stage, this is disgusting

<adj_> i will move on and forget about allwinner
<deasy_> i see them making some effort (maybe little since they have a github account) but it's not already a bit better ?
<deasy_> i would like to write a letter at them, because i don't like to see constant "virulent" post about gpl infrigement
<deasy_> simply ask them to do their best effort and play the "open source game"
<deasy_> when people must hunt for binaries in a repo, it's not a good way
<deasy_> constantly hunt for see if there is nor binaries
<deasy_> not*
<deasy_> if they do an effort, it will be really better for everyone
<adj_> they should know how to do it, and do it
<adj_> clearly they don't care
<deasy_> a better ambiance and reputation
<deasy_> maybe the DIY market is really small and not at all important for their incoming
<deasy_> i don't know the percentage between board alone and smartphone sell with allwiner socs
<adj_> the binary code it's not made for the DIY market
<deasy_> i know
<adj_> observe software licenses is a must

<deasy_> late*
<adj_> maybe this sounds rude, but i feel that they don't mind making chinese crappy staff forever
<jero> maybe it's the house norm so they don't see it
<adj_> china can't compete on price for ever, others will take their position, if they want to compete with usa, japan or korea, they need to compete on quality

<deasy_> okay i must admit the site web of rockchip is not what i will call professionnal...it looks ridiculous
<deasy_> maybe should i judge soc company by their website ?
<deasy_> their site is cheap
<jero> it looks futuristic
<deasy_> i don't even see any page for developpers/documentation
<Turl> why would they need one?
<Turl> their business is selling turnkey solutions, as to say
<deasy_> both have similar cheap website
<deasy_> i would personnaly not be their customer, seeing this

<paulk-collins> hey, do you guys know how I could automatically add config options to the U-Boot config without changing any file on the tree? That is, some kind of menuconfig where I would provide a config file, which would be added to the current config
<Turl> paulk-collins: can't you just provide a boot.scr?
<paulk-collins> I mean the u-boot kconfig
<paulk-collins> Turl, for instance, enabling CONFIG_OLD_SUNXI_KERNEL_COMPAT
<Turl> but why do you want to touch uboot at all?
<Turl> ah
<paulk-collins> but with scripts
<paulk-collins> not manually with menuconfig
<paulk-collins> also, for some reason, defining CONFIG_OLD_SUNXI_KERNEL_COMPAT in sunxi-common.h doesn't make it apply to the SPL
<Turl> there's a kconfig magic incantation to enable options without a gui iirc
<Turl> paulk-collins: I thought the spl and uboot configs had been unified?
<paulk-collins> Turl, they should be
<paulk-collins> I don't understand why this happens
<paulk-collins> and some defines from sunxi-common.h are used by the SPL
<paulk-collins> but not CONFIG_OLD_SUNXI_KERNEL_COMPAT
<paulk-collins> I have no idea why

I've cross-compile Qt 5.3 and I'm ready to use this image for production. Thus, is there a way to extract the image from the NAND to Phoenix format ? Or if I build an image on an SDCard is there a way to write it to the NAND quickly for production ? I take a look to th

<paulk-collins> is the ethernet controller doing DMA on mainline?
<uaguy> Hello and good evening. I try to run the universal allwinner uboot loader "20141215-sunxi-bootsetup-prototype-v5" on my regular cubietruck. It is supposed to load uboot and then the debian installer, showing a menu via hdmi. No hdmi, and the UART connection halts after "U-Boot [..] DRAM:".
<uaguy> Can anyone confirm that this bootloader-image actually (still) works (with cubietruck' allwinner A20)? I am using the latest SD-card-image from https://github.com/ssvb/sunxi-bootsetup/releases/tag/20141215-sunxi-bootsetup-prototype
<Turl> ssvb: ^
<Turl> paulk-collins: which one?
<paulk-collins> Turl, mhh I have an olinuxino-lime2 here
<paulk-collins> that would be RTL8211CL
<ssvb> uaguy: yes, it works on my cubietruck, but maybe your board is a little bit different and not quite compatible with these settings
<Turl> paulk-collins: that's the phy, I meant gmac or emac?
<ssvb> uaguy: does a regular mainline u-boot work fine on it?
<paulk-collins> Turl, GMAC
<paulk-collins> Turl, IIRC DMA support in mainline is incomplete, correct?
<paulk-collins> I'm not up to date on this
<Turl> paulk-collins: I think GMAC does DMA itself
<Turl> paulk-collins: like MMC
<paulk-collins> ah ok
<Turl> paulk-collins: but ask wens to be sure
<uaguy> ssvb: I never heard of different versions? Hmm, I successfully booted the images from igorpecovnik and some more linked on the sunxi debian images list
<Turl> paulk-collins: emac iirc can use DMA via the DMA slave, but it doesn't on mainline
<paulk-collins> well the thing is, I connected two 1000Mbps ethernet-enabled devices and I only get poor speeds
<paulk-collins> Turl, alright, thanks
<uaguy> ssvb: did hdmi work too for you, with that loader?
<Turl> paulk-collins: well, it doesn't work to line rate, but you should be getting north of 300Mbps at least
<paulk-collins> I'm very far from that
<Turl> less than fast ethernet?
<paulk-collins> about 10Mbps
<Turl> are you using a non-crap cable?
<paulk-collins> heh
<Turl> sounds like it negotiated as low as it can go
<paulk-collins> right
<paulk-collins> maybe I'll check with another cable
<ssvb> uaguy: not different versions, but individual tolerances of different boards
<Turl> paulk-collins: if you have mii-tool have a look at the negotiated speed
<Turl> (and it may be printed on dmesg too, not sure)
<uaguy> paulk-collins: my method would be to check what link the connection uses, i.e. what LED indicator on the switch.. then try another switch or a direct connection to a computer?
<ssvb> uaguy: yes, hdmi works, but hdmi gets initialized much later after dram
<paulk-collins> Turl, says it negotiated 100
<uaguy> ssvb: makes sense, I can't get hdmi that early.. I only see two lines of message altogether
<paulk-collins> Turl, ahh, I was using compression in rsync
<Turl> paulk-collins: that can kill performance as well
<Turl> :)
<paulk-collins> without compression it's now more around 80Mbps
<Turl> paulk-collins: use iperf
<paulk-collins> ok
<paulk-collins> sorry for the noise then
<ssvb> uaguy: it tries to run at a reduced voltage, lower dram clock speed and some other changes compared to the regular cubietruck dram setup
pmattern has quit [Quit: Genug für heute.]
<ssvb> uaguy: kind of generic settings, which were expected to work with any board
<uaguy> ssvb: So that means I can't use that loader, except messing with the internals and changing those settings to a safer limit for my particular board? Sounds like I can more or less forget that board..?
<ssvb> uaguy: apparently your board is more picky
<ssvb> uaguy: you can still rebuild u-boot and use that image
<uaguy> Yes, I read a bit about the development process of that tool.. interesting read, but looks like a roadblock here? hmm..
Black_Horseman has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb> uaguy: it could be that some minor tweak for the dram settings could make it work on your board too
<uaguy> As you used it before: do you think with that Debian installer I'll be able to setup a "normal" Debian (wheezy), especially with an initramfs? Which is needed to have LUKS encryption, which is a must for me
<ssvb> uaguy: I am not a debian guy myself, and this is just a current debian installer for arm from debian people
<ssvb> uaguy: I have not tried to setup LUKS encryption with it yet
<uaguy> Thanks ssvb. I'll just assume and hope it will work out once I would get that uboot to boot then.
<ssvb> uaguy: try the http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainline_U-boot#Build instructions
<ssvb> uaguy: you just need to configure u-boot for the Cubietruck, build it and dd to the sd card
<ssvb> uaguy: and then copy /boot/setup/boot-a20.scr into /boot.scr
<ssvb> uaguy: oh, in fact don't touch the *.scr files
<uaguy> ssvb: As I have no cross-compiler set up any more, I should be able to do it on the cubietruck directly? I have a working Debian image I can SSH to. Maybe I can even recycle the (working) uboot things from there?
<ssvb> uaguy: yes, there is also a pre-built u-boot binary on that sd card
<ssvb> uaguy: in the /boot/setup/u-boot-binaries directory
<uaguy> (talking about an entirely different SD-image here, with Debian)
<ssvb> uaguy: I'm not sure if you can hot-swap the sd card
<uaguy> ssvb: I meant to copy uboot files from one working image to the Debian-bootloader-image, and then trying to boot that one
<ssvb> uaguy: you can use your desktop PC to mount the SD card and find the /boot/setup/u-boot-binaries/u-boot-sunxi-with-spl-Cubietruck.bin file there
<ssvb> uaguy: and then dd this file manually to the SD card
<ssvb> uaguy: using "dd if=u-boot-sunxi-with-spl-Cubietruck.bin of=/dev/sdX bs=1024 seek=8" (and replace /dev/sdX with the right device there)
<uaguy> ssvb: sorry, was afk for a small emergency.. will try this now

<uaguy> ssvb: after managing to loop-mount other sd-card-images, I found out the working image I have apparently does not use an uboot at all.. Am I right to assume I only need the "setup" subfolder, where the Debian installer is in, and the "boot.scr" file, which starts the installer? So I could replace more or less everything else, to have a foreign bootfolder/uimage start the boot.scr file?
<uaguy> sorry for all the newbieness here
iamfrankenstein has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb> uaguy: u-boot is used to boot from this sd card, it is written to raw sectors and not present as a file in the filesystem
<ssvb> uaguy: yes, you can do a lot of various things
<ssvb> uaguy: but the easiest is just to replace the bootloader using the dd command
<uaguy> ssvb: this is madness! :-) thank you for the hint, I would have not thought of this.. probably explains why I can't mount every dd image I have
simosx has joined #linux-sunxi
<uaguy> ssvb: wow.. I was all happy when I saw "hey, just slap a bootable image onto an SD card, and the board boots from it automagically!". Seems like I was only partly right with that..
