<Topgun100>
anyone using rock chip in an embedded solution?
<Topgun100>
what is the stability like?

<thefinn93>
so i've got this rk3188 and i wanna install debian on it. what's the best way to go about that?
<thefinn93>
(i understand yall are the people to talk to)
<thefinn93>
ooo nvm i got it
<thefinn93>
was having issues getting it into the mode where it can be flashed
<thefinn93>
as my device doesnt have a volume switch
<Theueip>
hey
<Theueip>
thefinn93, I am curious about buying a rk3188, how much did it cost you?
<thefinn93>
not sure, Dan68_ bought it and gave it to me on the conditions that i hack something cool out of it
<thefinn93>
i think it was ~$60
<thefinn93>
emphasis on think
<Theueip>
oh, thought it would be less expansive
<thefinn93>
idk, might be
<Theueip>
what are you going to do with it? :)
Topgun100 has joined #linux-rockchip
<thefinn93>
well at the current moment nothing, cuz i cant get fucking linux on it
<Theueip>
^^
<thefinn93>
im working on it, but it's not quite as easy as i'd like
<thefinn93>
gonna document everythign when i get it working
<Theueip>
nice :)
<thefinn93>
the linux-rockchip.info or whatever site could do with some more documentation, general cleaning up, etc
<thefinn93>
ima try to add as much as I can about the rk3188
<thefinn93>
and this weird ass device i have in particular
<Theueip>
I mainly have a software background (programming, linux...), but I am curious learning more about hardware. I only know the basics in electronics. :/
<thefinn93>
oh, definately not my field of expertise
* thefinn93
is just a software guy
<Theueip>
Do you think it's possible to create a simple board like the mchck?
<thefinn93>
electronics have no ctrl-z
<Theueip>
hehe
<thefinn93>
i have no idea
<Topgun100>
I'm a software guy too. Is anyone here using rock chip for embedded solutions? I'm curious about stability.
<Topgun100>
So far my experience with rk3066 has not been great (one stick burnt out after a week, and another has really poor wifi). The price/formfactor/features are second to none so I want to keep trying.
<Theueip>
thefinn93, I'd to learn more about it, especially if it's not too hard to use that chip for elec' newbies. It would be nice to use a custom board + android for home automation. Let me know what you acheive to do with it :)
<Theueip>
Is there some open schematic btw? couldnt find any..
<Topgun100>
Would anyone here be interested in working on a minimal ubuntu build geared at embedded applications?
<Topgun100>
Home automation and the like.
<Theueip>
I don't have any chip (or final usb key using this chip) right now
<Theueip>
thefinn93, are you working directly with the chip or are you using a board?
<thefinn93>
a board
<thefinn93>
im really not a hardware person
<Theueip>
ok :)
<Theueip>
and linux is not already installed?
<thefinn93>
no
<thefinn93>
it comes with android
<thefinn93>
which is technically i guess
<Theueip>
:)
<thefinn93>
but i'd rather a nice clean debian build that i made my self
<thefinn93>
(most of the guides encourage you to download an image from them, which is sketch as hell IMO)
<Theueip>
ok
<Dan68_>
hey thefinn93, I bought that stickfor like $54
<thefinn93>
ah ok
<thefinn93>
i was pretty close
<Theueip>
ok
<Theueip>
thx :)
<thefinn93>
btw, Dan68_ i'm building a custom debian image, for it
<thefinn93>
any particular pakages you want (besides cjdns)
<Theueip>
I am curious about the price of the chip only though, if someone is into hardware :)
<Dan68_>
thefinn93: eh, make sure to include vrms
<Dan68_>
cause who doesn't love a virtual Richar M Stallman
<Dan68_>
*Richard
<Dan68_>
what kernel are you building for it btw?
<thefinn93>
building it for that rockchip thing
<thefinn93>
wadda you mean?
<thefinn93>
oh god vrms is a thing, and its actually virtual Richard M Stallman
<thefinn93>
i thought you were making fun of the accronym
<thefinn93>
also The Free Software Foundation lists vrms among packages that don't respect its Free System Distribution Guidelines
<Dan68_>
mhmm
<Dan68_>
it is in the non-free package for wheezy actually
<Dan68_>
it was in main for sid tho
<Dan68_>
it could use some updates to cmply fully with RMS's oppinions tho
<thefinn93>
huh
<thefinn93>
lol
<thefinn93>
BTW still on for 5pm?
<Dan68_>
yep
<thefinn93>
kk cool
<Dan68_>
I'm debating leaving early actually
* thefinn93
wouldnt mind that
<thefinn93>
im sitting here bored
<Dan68_>
lolk
<Dan68_>
hows the laptop working out?
<Dan68_>
has it sold you on SSDs yet?
Tsvetan3 has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<thefinn93>
not really
<thefinn93>
performance isnt noticbly faster
<Dan68_>
its all about loading times man
<thefinn93>
well the terminal loaded up real quick
