Hey guys. Quick q, anybody know why the gridcoin wallet uses so much I/O bandwidth? Gridcoinresearch.exe is using 10MB/s all day long
<TerryxMasters>
I'm worried my drives gonna wear out
<caraka>
That is very strange. Are you sure it is the wallet?

Yeah it's definitely the wallet

I'm not on Win and don't host the NN, but that is excessive

curly-brace: Up until now, there wasn't a massive need for a pool
<customminer>

xXUnRealXx has joined #gridcoin
<customminer>
curly-brace: anyone can make pools or projects
<Quezacoatl>
Actually, Katiee will have to create another pool CPID I guess
<curly-brace>
there is no open-sourced pool scripts for gridcoin, like there are for cryptonight for example
Kutowi has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<curly-brace>
so actually you need to write it from scratch first
<customminer>
yeah true, it's not open source yet
<curly-brace>
that is the effort
<customminer>
indeed
<customminer>
katiee may open source the pool code in the future, but she's working on fixing some issues still I believe
<customminer>
plus it's not her full time job, just a side project/hobby
<curly-brace>
and when you make one, there is probably a chance that not much of the people will move to it from katiee's one
<customminer>
unless you undercut katiee's fees
<curly-brace>
customminer, she said by herself that she is willing to opensource it?
<customminer>
at one point I believe it was discussed
<curly-brace>
kitiee's pool gives more profit because of accounts with no wallet address
<customminer>
I'm unsure about that
<curly-brace>
and you need a starting pool balance to stake
<curly-brace>
she has 20000
<customminer>
but a major issue is indeed users that point their boinc rigs at the pool but configure no receiving address
<customminer>
yeah, you'd need an initial pool balance
<curly-brace>
so making a pool requires much work and finances. and it has chances to be not very profitable
xms has joined #gridcoin
<customminer>
It requires less work than creating a pool from scratch for a POW crypto, and the staking balance is never at risk. It may not be profitable right now, but if you have a fee of 5% on 20k mag, you've essentially got a mag of 1000 for free
<customminer>
5 years from now, that could be huge. who knows?
<curly-brace>
gridcoin may become a simple toy in 5 years, lol
<customminer>
We're still a tiny community compared to the overall BOINC community. 3.5 Million registered, 350k active.
<customminer>
>gridcoin
<customminer>
>simple
<customminer>
I don't think so
<customminer>
lol
<curly-brace>
now it's price is 2000 satoshi, but in 5 years it may become 20
<customminer>
Could very well be the case - cryptos are volatile & your guess/speculation is as good as mine.
<curly-brace>
i'm not a trader tho
<customminer>
If it does drop to 20, I'll be buying up a major stake though.
<curly-brace>
i just state that in 5 years the crypto-hype will settle down
<curly-brace>
there will be few winners only
<customminer>
you say this, but bitcoin has been out for what.. 7 years now? It's only increased in popularity, and thousands of cryptocurrency and blockchain projects have been created
<curly-brace>
bitcoin is already a winner
<curly-brace>
lol
<customminer>
bitcoin is very centralized & archaic compared to several alt-coins
<curly-brace>
and will be
<curly-brace>
people are archaic too
<customminer>
10 min block times, large fees, centralized consensus mechanism, centralized development governance, etc
<curly-brace>
banks only begin to look at bitcoin, and when do they look at some altocoin? =)
<customminer>
banks are not going to be using bitcoin
<customminer>
they're going to use their own private blockchains
<customminer>
look at R3, hyperledger, etc
<curly-brace>
on top of bitcoin's one
<customminer>
nope
<curly-brace>
why?
<customminer>
completely seperate to bitcoin
<customminer>
because why not? they are creating their own platforms completely seperate to bitcoin
<curly-brace>
if they make their own crypto it won't be decentalized
<customminer>
banks don't care about centralization, they're centralized entities
<curly-brace>
now they are using 3rd party services for transcations and pay huge fees and have very large lag between transactions
<customminer>
yeah if they use bitcoin
<curly-brace>
bitcoin is much better solution
<customminer>
negative
<customminer>
bitcoin is archaic
<curly-brace>
tho not a bitcoin itself, but its blockchain
<customminer>
blockchain theory, yes.
<curly-brace>
whatever. i just wanna say that gridcoin may not exist in 5 years
<curly-brace>
and making a pool may be not very profitable. especially making it from scratch

curly-brace: gridcoin will exist in 5 years time. Even if it dropped to 0 value, users have been contributing their resources to BOINC for well over a decade for free.
<curly-brace>
gonna read
<curly-brace>
users contributed to team-race, not a gridcoin
<customminer>
Yeah, a pool may not currently be profitable. Making it from scratch is just a time & effort factor.
<curly-brace>
so they will return to this race
m0l0ch has joined #gridcoin

So I didnt get a payout from the 1,520 RAC earned?
<curly-brace>
marix, wow! thank you man! got the updates!
<Jonbvn>
Remember RAC is relative. 1520 RAC on primegrid is negligible. My RAC on the same project to get a mag of around 120 is 760k. Your RAC is compared to the rest of the team
tom12 has joined #gridcoin

However, the way RAC is calculated means it takes about 30 days continuous running to reach it's max level. What GPU do you have?
