<jfhbrook>
yeah 'sok tho
<jfhbrook>
my boss says on the DL that *our* jobs are safe
<jfhbrook>
that the main team might lose a small handful of employees, I think our open head count is toast
<jfhbrook>
edit's gonna get gutted though
<jfhbrook>
and like
<jfhbrook>
my job prospects are mostly positive
<jfhbrook>
I've been tuning my linkedin a bit, getting leads on devops positions of all things
<jfhbrook>
which could be a hilarious change
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
so
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
explain to me what devops is
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
because I *still* don't understand
<jfhbrook>
>:)
<jfhbrook>
don't worry nobody does :)
<jfhbrook>
so devops /originally/ was a management concept where you make your developers and your operators Work Together and have more cross-pollenation between the teams
<jfhbrook>
dovetails into agile, etc, basic idea is to avoid batching big releases and then tossing them over the wall to the sysadmins and telling them to make it happen ok
<jfhbrook>
basically if you're doing lower case agile you're probably also "doing devops"
<jfhbrook>
especially if your ops people are embedded on feature teams
<jfhbrook>
BUT
<jfhbrook>
in practice, "devops", esp. as in "devops engineer" doesn't actually mean that
<jfhbrook>
it just means sysadmin, but in a world where people have to manage entire clouds instead of just the odd box or two
<jfhbrook>
so owning the cloud and to an extent the platform
<jfhbrook>
larger companies explicitly have a platform engineering team
<jfhbrook>
that includes software engineers in addition to devops engineers
<jfhbrook>
the devops engineer skillset also overlaps heavily with SREs
<jfhbrook>
an SRE is someone that's just on call all. the. time. and whose job is to figure out what causes/caused an issue and then plugging the hole so it never wakes anyone up again
