<alexgordon>
we'll know the mormons were right and jesus christ has come back to save all the white folks, when yrashk tweets about a non-erlang-related topic
<jesusabdullah>
hah
<micahjohnston_>
alexgordon: hahahahaha
<micahjohnston_>
alexgordon: or hiking, based on when i last followed him
<micahjohnston_>
those two topics
<alexgordon>
followed jesus christ, or followed yrashk?
<alexgordon>

<gkatsev>
so, who here knows who Doug Engelbart was before today?
<joelteon>
nope
<gkatsev>
do you know who he was now?
<joelteon>
no
<gkatsev>
:(
<whitequark>
gkatsev: I kinda did
<whitequark>
but I don't believe in visionaries with breaktrough ideas. so, whatever.
<joelteon>
it's not that hard to break a trough
<gkatsev>
lol
<purr>
lol
<whitequark>
more specifically, I do
<whitequark>
but if you implement them as well, and they work
<gkatsev>
whitequark: ok, that doesn't mean he didn't do awesome stuff that definitely changed what we know of as computers currently.
<whitequark>
gkatsev: changed compared to what?
<gkatsev>
well, without him we wouldn't have had the mouse, for one thing. Or rather, it wouldn't have been what we now know as the mouse
<gkatsev>
but he did a lot of other stuff as well
<whitequark>
I don't think so
<whitequark>
(wouldn't have had the mouse)
<whitequark>
my motivation: 1. a *lot* of HCI devices were invented and prototyped. only very few sticked.
<whitequark>
2. a *lot* of so-called breakthrough inventions were not singular. several people implemented slightly different variants of the same concept at about the same time.
<gkatsev>
I'm not saying that it was all him
<whitequark>
there is nothing intrinsically complex in the concept of a mouse. sooner or later--yes, we could have it ten years later--it would emerge
<gkatsev>
I'm saying that he definitely helped shape it
<gkatsev>
the mouse and arpanet and a few other stuff he worked on
<whitequark>
as every other engineer on the team
<whitequark>
hm, I have a better analogy
<whitequark>
no, I don't.
<whitequark>
well, whatever
<whitequark>
this discussion isn't worth it
<gkatsev>
just so happens that the thing he shaped ended up being used by just about every person alive
<whitequark>
should we treat the inventor of x86 with similar fame?
<whitequark>
or, for that matter, John von Neumann (if we don't take into account shitload of his *other*, very valuable contributions to various fields)?
<whitequark>
he needed to build a computer. he built one of the few simplest things that could possibly work
<gkatsev>
yeah, people should know who von neumann is as well
<whitequark>
that is a remarkable engineering achievement, given the time and constraints, but it's really not fundamental in any way. he was doing his work, and he did it well.

:(
<joelteon>
so I learned this neat thing about imagemagick today
<joelteon>
if you're using the magickwand API to build images and you try to output one in PNG format, and you don't have a PNG library available
<joelteon>
it will give you exception #0 "undefined exception"
<micahjohnston_>
hi
<purr>
micahjohnston_: hi!
<micahjohnston_>
joelteon: helpful
