<CubicEarth>
it's always good to have tor as an option, but there is the performance hit
<yanmaani>
not too mcuh data is there?
<CubicEarth>
that's totally subjective :D
<yanmaani>
it's 1 mb / 10 minutes + txns
<sipa>
tor also has a latency impact
<sipa>
which matters to some nodes (especially miners)
<sipa>
also, tor only connectivity (to random peers) is far easier to eclipse attack than IP-based mechanisms
<zmnscpxj_>
fewer exit nodes
<CubicEarth>
^^^^
<zmnscpxj_>
Tor *is* useful when your ISP is somehow not sufficiently competent to give you a public IP address
<CubicEarth>
sipa: although explicitly allowing for latency can be very helping in disguising data, so that could / should be an option for some of the plugins
<sipa>
i believe it's extraordinarily hard to beat traffic analysis for bitcoin
<CubicEarth>
or having a constant bitstream, so it looks like a VoIP call is just on going. Mostly it would be garbage data, by txns and blocks would be interspersed as needed
<zmnscpxj_>
bandwidth cost though
<zmnscpxj_>
are we talking about steganography of the bitcoin p2p protocol?
<sipa>
it has very recognizable patterns, and you'd need either huge delays (1 blob every 10*N minutes guaranteed to have at least a few blocks), or a huge bandwidth marking from stuffing the stream with garbage
<CubicEarth>
it's always going to be counter to efficiency... the signal must be hidden in noise
<CubicEarth>
sure, the more you want to hide the meaningful data, the more bandwidth you'd need to consume with junk

sipa: what about streaming it?
<yanmaani>
If you have mempool sync then it won't be a problem
<zmnscpxj_>
mempools are under the control of random people on the internet, so you won't know how much bandwidth that takes up
<yanmaani>
Roughly the same speed as txn sync
