<hipertracker> Is it possible execiting Ruby code in a regular expression? Perl can do this.
<trevoke> hipertracker: Yes, you can interpolate Ruby code the same way you do in a string, with #{ruby_code_here}
<hipertracker> trevoke: But I mean gsub,like http://perldoc.perl.org/perlretut.html#A-bit-of-magic%3a-executing-Perl-code-in-a-regular-expression
<hipertracker> I want to extract something and pass it to my own Ruby function x.gsub patter, 'myfun(\1)'
<trevoke> hipertracker: The page to which you linked does not mention gsub. Could you create a small gist with what you wish to make, or explain it a little?

<blazes816> if you would use python, php, or perl, there's no reason to not use ruby instead. but they're higher level languages than c/c++
<blazes816> you can get more done faster, but you lose control in exchange.
<blazes816> no direct memory access for example
<heftig> i could see ruby getting used as an embedded scripting language in a game engine

<blazes816> if you're building a web app with ruby, you will also be using html a lot
<blazes816> and javascript/css. they're different components.
<blazes816> you'd be using them if you wrote your web app in C as well
<Pizza90> oh i see :)

<sent-hil> did you put the require 'pry' before requiring the config/load file?
<shevy> becom33 what do you mean - with YAML.load_file() you can load a yaml data, then use this dataset
<becom33> where did i say load_file ?
<justinlilly> sent-hil: as the first line in github-services.rb .. still no dice.
<shevy> becom33 it does not matter, yaml stores information. you access that information.

<becom33> shevy, without building a global variable how can access one variable value in every method inside the class
<whowantstolivefo> hiya people when i have windows 7 OS and i installed ruby on rails via rails installer and i installed gems etc. today when i try to create projects from ruby i get some error. when i try " gem -v , rails -v " i get this error http://pastebin.com/4DppGYr1 <<< what is the problem can be ?
<shevy> becom33 assign it to an instance variable like @data = YAML.load_file('bla.yml')
<shevy> becom33 typically I put that into a method, like read_yaml_dataset; @data = YAML.load_file('bla.yml')
<shevy> def read_yaml_dataset
<shevy> usually shorter
<shevy> def read_dataset or just def read_data

<iamjarvo> does anyone know of a programming dictioanry. i basiacally want to get the definition of a word in a programming context

<shevy> invisime what if the word he is seeking is "programming while having sex"
<quazimodo> shevy: and when I break out of that loop how do I do a conditional, if until t==true; if t==true then do stuff
<invisime> >> 1.upto(10) do puts 'stuff'; puts 'other stuff' end
<al2o3cr> (Fixnum) 1, Console: stuff, other stuff, stuff, other stuff, stuff, other stuff, stuff, other stuff, stuff, other stuff, stuff, other stuff, stuff, other stuff, stuff, other stuff, stuff, other stuff, stuff, other stuff
<quazimodo> sorry i mean
<shevy> quazimodo, I dont like until and while loops
<shevy> but say you have a method like foo
<workmad3> invisime: really? people in here know programming? :P
<iamjarvo> invisime: thanks, but i tend to have them all the time
<shevy> loop { foo } unless @game_over
<shevy> and @game_over could be set/handled inside foo() method
<quazimodo> shevy: loop { foo } unless @game_over; if @game_over stuff end ?

<invisime> shevy: they're occasionally necessary/useful for things like IO.

<Ontolog> Hanmac: i don't understand
<koshii> Hey speaking of non-English languages, with RegEx do I need to worry about the difference between "a" and "a" non-unicode?
<Ontolog> so that is the ruby bot printing it out like that
<Ontolog> but how do I convert my string to contain that output?
<koshii> If someone inputs non-unicode text into my app for example, does it get automatically converted?
<kiyoura> .to_s ?

<moshef> davidcelis: think I just didn't pass the attributes properly, checking now
<davidcelis> that's what i thought you were doing
<davidcelis> *args comes in as an array of arguments
<davidcelis> so what you end up passing is [{ ... }] and calling .each on the array
<davidcelis> instead if `initialize(*args)` you seem to want something like `initialize(attrs={})`
<moshef> actually I earlier tried to pass it just with commas
bradhe has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<davidcelis> doesn't matter
<moshef> but as array, how does it set the value?
<davidcelis> Ruby implicitly declares that as a single hash
<moshef> yeah I got it now
<moshef> what do I do then?
<davidcelis> moshef: what i'm trying to tell you is you don't WANt an array with what you're doing
<moshef> not use it?
<davidcelis> do what i just told you to do
<davidcelis> have initialize take a hash instead of a splatted args array
<moshef> gotcha
<moshef> let me try
<blazes816> change "*args" to "args" and it should work
<davidcelis> yes i've established that :P
<moshef> when do you want to use *args then?
<davidcelis> moshef: when you want a method that takes an indeterminate number of arguments
<asklov> moshef: when you want to pass a list of arguments without explicitly declaring a list
<moshef> can you provide an example please/
<moshef> I know you're using it when you don't know how many args you're passing, but how the object will look like?
<davidcelis> >> def join_some_strings(*args) args.join(" ") end; join_some_strings("hello", "world");
