<wpwrak> phew. i'm getting too old for this nonsense. spent something like two hours convincing X to deign to tolerate the presence of a new monitor. eventually it gave in. almost. as a token of resistance, it chose to name the screens :1 and :1.1, not the customary :0 and whatever. i'm sure this will break some things ...

<DocScrutinizer05> the darn new autodetect in X11? never thought this is a good design concept
<DocScrutinizer05> in the 'good old days' I had tons of fun tweaking parameters for CyrusLogic(?) / SI(?) chipsets to make X11 work with them
<DocScrutinizer05> along the lines of http://cppcms.com/files/xorg.conf.txt
<DocScrutinizer05> actually rather http://edge-op.org/grouch/xconfig.html

<DocScrutinizer05> >>As newer versions of the (originally freeware) X386 were being sold under a proprietary software license by SGCS (of which Roell was a partner), confusion existed between the projects. After discussion, the project was renamed XFree86, as a pun (compare X-three-eighty-six to X-free-eighty-six).<<
<DocScrutinizer05> that was real fun, back in the 90s, to get X11 run on a 386 with maybe 4MB of RAM and a cheesy Cyrus or Silicon chipset
<DocScrutinizer05> with 486DX2 it already almost worked
<DocScrutinizer05> there were quite a few hoops to hop in xconfig to get all the "518 533 591 33 45 1008 24 50" etc right and make it work, but for sure *numbering of displays* was not one of them
