<zrafa> hi
<zrafa> does somebody know synopsys custom designer software?
<zrafa> what is exactly that? does somebody know some open source replacement for that kind of software synopsys sells'
<zrafa> ?

<wpwrak> kicad comes to mind as a replacement :)
<wpwrak> well, maybe not. "nanometer" suggests it's about making chips, not circuits
<wpwrak> this list may have something: http://www.vlsitechnology.org/html/ic_software.html
<wpwrak> building a chip factory ? :)
<zrafa> it seems to be an old list

<zrafa> yeah, i meant synopsys.com
<wpwrak> hmm, yes, 2007
<zrafa> software. at engineering faculty
<zrafa> will be a HUGE BIGGEST BEST congress
<zrafa> next year
<zrafa> and they will pay students around AR
<zrafa> transport and hostel
<zrafa> to do the GREAT courses
<zrafa> about nano micro chips
<zrafa> design
<zrafa> of course, they asked me if our labs is okey to run virtualbox with synopsys and similar propietary software
<zrafa> which is free for the courses
<wpwrak> i remember there's also some french-made chip design system. i think it's alliance: https://soc-extras.lip6.fr/en/alliance-abstract-en/
<zrafa> because the professor of the courses will be people from synopsys.com who will come to ARG
<zrafa> just for this congress
<wpwrak> wow :)
<zrafa> then that did to rememeber me the RMS words
<zrafa> about free (gratis) propietary software for students
<zrafa> in education
<wpwrak> free opium ;-)
<zrafa> which of course is not free after they get the degreee
<zrafa> exactly
<zrafa> and then now I feeel a little bad if I colaborate with that congress like I promised to the engineering faculty
<wpwrak> this one looks like fun. good luck remembering all the (100+, it seems) color codes ;-) http://opencircuitdesign.com/magic/
<zrafa> Of course, electronic people here do not know anything about open source. So they feel that they are winning the heaven with the huGE effort they do to get all the money to pay the transport and hostel for the students for the courses

<wpwrak> you could do some intro courses a few months before. so all the students will ask how they can map their alliance/magic/etc. workflow to the synopsys tools ;)
wildlander has quit [Quit: Saliendo]
<kyak> is there a single production chip out there made with open source tools only?
<kyak> how many open source chips do you know?
<kyak> these are the questions you should ask before feeling bad about collaboration with these proprietrary vendors

<wpwrak> kyak: if there is one, it means that you can feel confident for you have a proof of concept; if there are many, you can feel confident because it's a well-established process; if there is none, you should be ecstatic for you'll do truly pioneering work. a win-win-win scenario :)
<wpwrak> besides, they've been at some of those tools for a long time. so there must be at least a bunch of chips from academic projects.
