<timclassic> I have an N900 on PR1.2, and I need to figure out how to get it to 1.3. I think I started this previously but ran out of time. Also, I want to back up my Ovi Maps data first.
<timclassic> I have notes around here somewhere...
<enyc> timclassic: I suggest asking in the #maemo channel =)
<timclassic> enyc: Ah, good idea

<DocScrutinizer05> 9-layer, wow
<amatus> that's an odd number
<amatus> sure it's not 10?
<amatus> huh, i guess it is 9
<Arch-TK> DocScrutinizer05: What are you doing to my pcb?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?
<Arch-TK> DocScrutinizer05: Jokes aside, is dual sim a thing or not a thing then?
<DocScrutinizer05> how's dual SIM related?
<Arch-TK> It's not, I was interested if dual sim is going to be a thing in the neo900 or not.
<DocScrutinizer05> our current plans include dual SIM no matter what, with possible support by PLS8 when available
<Arch-TK> Cool.
<DocScrutinizer05> when PLS8 doesn't come with dual SIM, we still offer our mux solution
<Arch-TK> This PLS8 is a new modem option?
<DocScrutinizer05> it's either modem==x==(2*SIM) or modem__x==(2*SIM)
<DocScrutinizer05> no, PLS8 always been the LTE option
<Arch-TK> Oh.
<DocScrutinizer05> PL(_v3 seems to come with dual-SIM support
<Arch-TK> Oh I see, the website says "worldwide" but you read down and there's the -E and -US variants.
<Arch-TK> I was confused if there was possibly a new option which did worldwide LTE on one chip.
<DocScrutinizer05> yeah, that's pretty 'cheesy'
<DocScrutinizer05> gemalto brags with "worldwide connectivity" and then offers LTE modem that can't do *anything* in USA
<DocScrutinizer05> not really their fault when USA fscks up their bands that much
<DocScrutinizer05> but still :-/
<Arch-TK> Oh well, when I want to have USA connectivity, I'll buy a cheapo reflow soldering station with heat man and positioned hot air gun and remove the chip and replace it... I wish.
<Arch-TK> s/man/mat/
<DocScrutinizer05> we would have done pluggable modem module if that was *any* feasible
pozitron has joined #neo900
<DocScrutinizer05> alas heat management is the major problem with any such solution. The modem depends on being soldered to a heatsink
<Arch-TK> You could do the Neo900 champion (see: victorinox champion) where the phone is 5cm thick.
<Arch-TK> and have pluggable modem.
<DocScrutinizer05> we coud do that :-)
<DocScrutinizer05> our ME scales pretty good
<DocScrutinizer05> could do 5 layer sandwich ;-D
<DocScrutinizer05> sorry, afk. busy
<Arch-TK> Also, apparently the european somethingorother is abolishing roaming charges.
<Arch-TK> which would be nice
<Arch-TK> european parliament
<Arch-TK> I never knew it was the european parliament who decided that there were roaming charges, I thought it was the phone companies.
<DocScrutinizer05> they decided to forbid those charges
<Arch-TK> oh, cool!
<Arch-TK> there will be connectors from the pcb which will be accessible from the battery compartment (under the battery or around the top of the phone?) but is there going to be any extra space in there? I guess not right?
<DocScrutinizer05> hackerbus, see 'resources'. No extra space
<Arch-TK> Oh.
<Arch-TK> Incidentally, would there be anything stopping me from compiling the latest kernel and running it on the neo900?
<DocScrutinizer05> (kernel) don't see what would stop you
<DocScrutinizer05> however refer to freemangordon work for how much of the OMAP3/maemo stuff already got upstreamed
<DocScrutinizer05> for a few subsystems like camera and PVR you want to 'borrow' existing blobs
<DocScrutinizer05> which are not exactly kernel but depend on it in some ways
<DocScrutinizer05> those blobs might or might not be compatible to latest kernel's ABI
<Arch-TK> The reason I ask is because archlinux arm hosts a 3.10 (I think) kernel for the odroid-c1 (for example) but I think that's mainly because hardkernel maintain a 3.10 fork with a bunch of custom patches just for the c1
<DocScrutinizer05> so you possibly need a compatibility layer or a patch to kernel to make them work
<Arch-TK> I see.
<Arch-TK> Well, that will be fun
<DocScrutinizer05> camera should work with standard V4L stuff afaik, however with possibly reduced quality compared to what Nokia shipped with N900/maemo that does some "magic" to the raw camera sensor data
vakkov has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<Arch-TK> Also, I know there are some projects for full phone interfaces, but are there any simple libraries which would let me (from c) talk directly to the modem without having to learn all of these serial commands?
<DocScrutinizer05> err, maybe check FSO
<DocScrutinizer05> ~fso
<infobot> extra, extra, read all about it, fso is the freesmartphone.org mobile devices middleware. http://www.freesmartphone.org//
<Arch-TK> fso?
<Arch-TK> oh
<DocScrutinizer05> o/ afk again
<Arch-TK> a dbus interface, yes, this looks good.
<Arch-TK> I can even write stuff for this in python when I don't want to use C
<Arch-TK> Very cool, thanks!
<freemangordon> ~elinux
<infobot> elinux is, like, http://eLinux.org/ or the Embedded Linux project. cross compilers. build systems, hardware hacking etc.
<freemangordon> Arch-TK: ^^^
<freemangordon> or rather http://elinux.org/N900
<freemangordon> DocScrutinizer05: hi!
<freemangordon> what's up?
vakkov has joined #neo900
<Arch-TK> Incidentally, is there an ereader like the neo900 (or at least an e-reader which is cheap and lets me run what I want on it.
<Arch-TK> one of those eink display things
