<unclouded> hey, wpwrak: those STL files for the Anelok case don't lay flat, which cause problems with the printer trying to print a sharp overhang

<wpwrak> unclouded: (not flat) you mean that they're uneven (the faces should be flat - but of course the top face had a big hole) or that they're rotated in space ?
<unclouded> rotated
<wpwrak> DocScrutinizer05: yes, about 30% of the volume. but been too lazy to calculate it :)
<wpwrak> unclouded: you can just rotate it by base_a. that's the inclination of a face to the base line (the line connecting the centers of the two cylinders, i.e., the y axis)
<unclouded> what is base_a though?
<wpwrak> import case print case.base_a 4.63928520068 (it's in degrees)
<unclouded> just wondering if it's some weirdness in the FreeCAD STL export or if it's deliberate?
<wpwrak> you have the source ;-)
<unclouded> just checking: those are the STLs intended for printing?
<wpwrak> you should be able to print them, yes. i uploaded them mainly for quick visualization, though. for anything that involves actually changing them, it's better to just go for the source
<wpwrak> but lemme add de-rotation to the model
<unclouded> cool. I thought I'd give them a print if they're only going to take an hour. do you happen to know which way Bas oriented the top? the bottom seems like it will be much easier to print
<wpwrak> no, i don't know how he orientated them. maybe the slicer has some automatic rotation or such
<wpwrak> and yes, the 1 hour is amazing. i thought it would take something like 5 or 6 hours. seems that 3d printers have grown up :)
<unclouded> I'll see if I can make it take longer on mine by printing with higher quality settings :)
<wpwrak> hehe ;-) what printer do you have ?
<unclouded> it's a Lulzbot TAZ 2.1. it's a bit big but it came with all the design files and source code on a 4GB SD card
<whitequark> "Lulzbot"?
<unclouded> yes, the 3D printer company with the silliest name: https://www.lulzbot.com/
<wpwrak> and open frame construction. gets rave reviews
<unclouded> great, cheers! I'll get slicing
<wpwrak> (they're also generated when you run case.py in freecad)
<wpwrak> (slicing) sounds like the summary of a tarantino movie ;-)
<unclouded> lol. now I won't be able to un-think that every time I'm slicing
<unclouded> knob looks perfectly flat in Blender now, great
<wpwrak> hmm, this one should be able to print about 20 cases per hour, at 300 dpi: http://www.voxeljet.de/en/systems/3d-druckervx200/
<wpwrak> layers are fat, though, 150 um
<unclouded> crikey that looks like a beast
<unclouded> not all expensive commercial printers are worth the money though. a civil engineer friend of mine often brings work for my TAZ because their expensive printer can't do it or do it well enough
<wpwrak> hehe ;-) yes, some of the big iron has abysmal specs
<unclouded> it's amazing that these things are completely blind. they whip their super-heated hot ends around like lightning with no concern for where your arms and fingers are
<wpwrak> well, there is an excellent array of sensors that immediately detects any problems, initiates countermeasures, and sounds an audible alarm :)
<unclouded> as long as those countermeasures involve cuss words then it's all good
<wpwrak> yes, you can often configure the language :)
<unclouded> I've never had anyone reach out and touch the hotend although I always explain that its twice as hot as boiling water
<wpwrak> "it's about as hot as the boiling tar they doused the enemies trying to storm the castle with" :)
