<whitequark> wpwrak: i've dug into solvespace's geometric engine
<whitequark> it uses NURBS surfaces, thus avoiding the problems mesh-based engines like cgal have
<whitequark> also "because all unions or subtractions must be constructed on a workplane on top of another solid" this was wrong
<whitequark> you can do arbitrary unions or subtractions
<whitequark> assuming you've previously correctly constrained the surfaces to be coincident, it will work
<whitequark> the really good part is that unlike freecad, solvespace's sketches are fully 3d
<whitequark> and it doesn't have a separate "draft" and "assembly" modes
<whitequark> i also really like the UI, not to mention it has working undo (unlike freecad) and doesn't randomly segfault (unlike freecad)

<wpwrak> (arbitrary unions) good. otherwise, i would constrain the workflow rather extremely

<wpwrak> can the thing also be scripted ? that's a nice way to work around bumps in the road

<whitequark> wpwrak: no, no scripting
<whitequark> haven't found it necessary so far. what i found it lacking in are a few other things
<whitequark> notably:
<whitequark> it can't chamfer or fillet edges
<whitequark> it can't import /any/ kind of data
<whitequark> (well, i didn't need to, so far, but it's obviously limiting)
<whitequark> it can't do parametric parts in the sense that you would use the same file and then enter parameters, like "profile X mm long"
<whitequark> (i haven't seen many cads that could tho)

<whitequark> (scripting) its savefile format is code in a stack based language, you could call it a dialect of forth i guess, that recreates the scene
<whitequark> wonder if you could use that
