<mrdata> i'm going to try to apply a yttrium-barium-copper-oxide superconducting layer on a substrate
<mrdata> and then chill it to 77 kelvin and have it superconduct; but, what substrate should i use?
<mrdata> i'm guessing its thermal expansion should match YBCO's
<mrdata> monel has almost the right value, but it may become magnetic at 77K
<mrdata> how bad will it be if the CTE isnt a match? i guess the coating will delaminate
<berndj> i thought thin films are more resilient to CTE differences?

<SpeedEvil> Fun!
<SpeedEvil> They are
<SpeedEvil> The simplest solution is probably just to google what other people have done

<Helldesk> do they change grain the structure, if they possess one, I wonder
<Helldesk> *change the
<Helldesk> or do they tend to be amorphous
<Helldesk> transformations from face-centered cubic to body-centered cubic would change the volume/size quite a bit if any material used preferred to do such a change along the way from room temperature to 77K
<SpeedEvil> That I was wondering about but diddn't bother typing
<mrdata> the coating is planned to be about 500 nm to 1 um thick; cracks would really spoil my day
<mrdata> preffered YBCO crystal orientation is parallel to the surface i think, but idk if i will get that without a lot of effort
<mrdata> greater uniformity will yield greater critical current
<mrdata> so probably apply the coating thicker than needed and hope the crystals line up right somewhere within its bulk
